The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. Since it is the play’s Broadway debut, Jacobs-Jenkins will appear...

Water for Elephants, an extravagant circus-meets-musical, premiered at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. This production, a collaboration between Rick Elice, who wrote the book, and PigPen Theatre Co., which was responsible for the score, marks the impressive Broadway debut.
Adapted from Sara Gruen‘s novel, Water for Elephants follows the story of Jacob Jankowski (played by Gregg Edelman), a retired veterinarian drawn to the circus. As the crew dismantles the set, Jacob lingers, and quizzical workers discover that he found his purpose at the circus after he fled his final exams at Cornell.
Grant Gustin portrays the younger Jacob, who, amid the Great Depression, hops aboard a train with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. The Benzinis faced financial ruin in 1929, and their new owner, August Rachinger (Paul Alexander Nolan), is yet to redefine the circus’s identity. Initially, August contemplates whether or not to throw Jacob off the train,...

A musical adaptation of Water for Elephants is slated to come to Broadway this spring.
The musical, based on the novel by Sara Gruen, is scheduled to play the Imperial Theatre starting Feb. 24, with an opening night set for March 21. Rick Elice, who wrote the book to Jersey Boys as well as Peter and the Starcatcher, penned the book for the musical, which features a score by the band PigPen Theatre Co.
Jessica Stone, who was nominated for the 2023 Tony Award for best direction of a musical for her work on Kimberly Akimbo, directs the musical.
The story follows an old man reminiscing on his younger adventures, when he jumped onto a moving train and then became part of a traveling circus, where he worked as a veterinarian and fell in love with the married star performer. The novel was also adapted into a film in 2011, starring Robert Patinson and Reese Witherspoon.

Plenty of attention is paid to the top races and acting categories at the Tony Awards. But if you are looking to do well in our prediction contest, you will also have to make smart decisions in the below-the-line categories as well. The four design categories often trip up Tony pundits, especially when there is no one show predicted to sweep. There is no single such juggernaut this season, which means upsets and surprises are likely. To provide some help with these tough categories, take a look at the analysis below before you make any final predictions.
Scenic Design
Flip a coin, because “Hadestown” and “Beetlejuice” are locked in a neck and neck race here. My gut says David Korins will win for having the “most” scenic design of any musical this season for “Beetlejuice.” It’s an immense set with moving parts, that perfectly captures a twisted Tim Burton vibe while keeping things fresh.

Some musicals take a hellish road to the Great White Way. For “Hadestown,” whose plot entwines stories from Greek mythology focused on Hades, Persephone, Orpheus, Eurydice, Hermes, and the Fates, hell features prominently on-stage as one of its literal settings. After a tortuous, and one might say hellish, decade-plus gestation period from minor stage productions to a concept album to professional mountings in New York and abroad, the musical from composer and librettist Anaïs Mitchell has finally arrived on Broadway, opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17.
Tony nominee Rachel Chavkin helped develop and directs the Broadway mounting of “Hadestown,” which boasts a cast of theatre stalwarts and newer thespians alike, including two-time Tony-nominee André De Shields, Eva Noblezada (“Miss Saigon”), Patrick Page, Amber Gray, and Reeve Carney.

It's been wowing crowds at festivals for over a year and for good reason: it's a great yarn. Bradley King's time travel tale Time Lapse, which I enjoyed, is much more concerned with drama and the characters at the centre of the story than it is with time travel itself. That's not to say that there isn't some mind bending time warping going on, there's plenty of that when you start to unfold the layers, but it's all beautifully and simply laid out to propel the story forward.
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to speak with King, who directed and co-wrote the movie, about the concept for the story, finding the perfect cast and just how they managed to keep the story on track. [Continued ...]...

In indie filmmaker Bradley King’s Santa Monica, Calif. office, Legos cover the desks, and multi-colored index cards line the walls. They’re both tools for King and his writing partner, Bp Cooper, to map out their screenplays. The indie filmmaking duo has a new sci-fi movie in theaters this Friday called “Time Lapse.” The index cards – complete with yarn connecting each plot point – is a familiar writing tool, and King and Cooper are using it now for two in-the-works scripts. One wall of their office is also devoted to breaking down the plot of Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” for inspiration. The Legos – and their boxes with labels like “minifigs,” “lights” and “vehicles” – are less commonly seen in writers’ offices, so let King explain: “When you’re playing with toys or dolls you don’t have to be like, ‘What’s this character’s motivation?’ You just immediately are like,...

All three happen in new indie sci-fi film “Time Lapse” when three friends discover a camera that can take photos of the future. They find the massive camera in their neighbor’s apartment, pointed directly at the living room window of their own Los Angeles bungalow apartment. Soon they figure out that “the machine,” as they call it, prints a photo at every day 8 p.m. of what’s happening 24 hours in the future. Roommate Jasper (played by George Finn) takes this opportunity to bet on dog races as the camera's Polaroids reveal the race results. Meanwhile, his painter roommate Finn (Matt O’Leary) breaks his creative block as the photos give him a peek at paintings...
