After a rather tame show last month, the freewheeling Golden Globes are kind of back. Only now they go by the name the 30th annual SAG Awards, which had a whole lot of the Globes and the Emmys in their bloodstream Saturday.
Finally on Netflix proper after being relegated to the streamer’s YouTube channel last year, the 2024 SAG Awards is yet another shiv in the side of broadcast TV by Team Sarandos as the first awards show to stream live on the global streamer.
In fact, that is likely why everyone from SAG-AFTRA boss Fran Drescher, de facto host Idris Elba, Beef star and now SAG Awards winner Ali Wong and more thanked the streamer and the co-ceo — cause that’s why they call it show business not show friends. Pro tip for Screen Actors Guild Awards viewers: Watch it live. That’s because even those Netflix subscribers on the cheaper advertising tier will still get a commercial-free experience when the telecast runs live on Saturday at 5 p.m. Pt/8 p.m. Et. After that initial livestream, however, commercial breaks will be inserted into replays for users on the ad tier looking to timeshift and watch the SAG Awards later.
It’s a landmark year for the SAG Awards, for a number of reasons. First off, it’s the 30th anniversary of the event, which returns to the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall — where the kudocast has spent most of its three-decade existence — after two years away.
Also, it’s the first SAG Awards following last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike and eventual new agreement with the AMPTP. And there’s a new production team behind this year’s SAG Awards: Baz Halpin,...

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
As the town takes off for the holidays and comes to a virtual standstill, the Oscar race roars on as eagle-eyed pundits continue to fanatically parse yesterday’s release of the shortlist in 10 categories (3 of them shorts) that could, I said could, give clues as to the ways the Oscar winds are blowing towards the start of nomination voting on January 11.
Meanwhile, the level of Q&As, talk show appearances, various honors announcements coming almost daily from the Palm Springs and Santa Barbara Film Festival, nominations from Golden Globes and Critics Choice, plus invites to parties have kept us hopping ever since the SAG strike ended and actors could once again do what they do best – talk about themselves. It was the most unusual Golden Globes Awards since 2008, when the writers’ strike forced producers to scrap it in favor of a press conference. But this year, the show strived to be, in the words of executive producer Barry Adelman, as “Golden Globes-y” as possible.
That meant embracing unpredictable moments, such as when Catherine O’Hara’s husband added sound effects from his phone to the “Schitt’s Creek” star’s acceptance speech, or when “Judas and the Black Messiah” star Daniel Kaluuya accidentally had his laptop on mute (something that was quickly rectified).
“There were a number of surprises all night long where suddenly people popped up in situations that you had no idea that it was happening,” Adelman said. “I thought it made the show extremely interesting. You suddenly saw children walk into the frame, you saw dogs. Jodie Foster and her wife and their dog was a total surprise and a wonderful picture.

Despite this year’s best efforts, 2020 will in fact still end at midnight on Dec. 31.
To mark the occasion, multiple broadcast networks are still planning to hold their annual New Years Eve specials on Thursday night as the ball drops over Times Square in New York City. But like everything else this year, those specials will see a few changes from their normal operations.
As in years past, the specials will feature some pre-taped performances as well as multiple locations from which they will broadcast, such as New York, Los Angeles, and New Orleans.
The most noticeable change will be the crowd in Times Square. Whereas the iconic New York location has held upwards of one million people in past years, this year there will only be about 150 invited guests in attendance. Nik Wallenda and his sister, Lijana, seventh-generation members of the Wallenda family highwire act, will attempt a walk of approximately 1,300 feet long and 25 stories above street level across New York City’s iconic Times Square.
The daredevil stunt will take place on Sunday, June 23 and be televised live by ABC as Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda as a two-hour event. The walk marks Lijana Wallenda’s first highwire stunt since a 2017 accident where she, along with four others, fell 30 feet off a tightrope during a rehearsal.
Nik Wallenda has done several of these televised stunts, including walking blindfolded between two skyscraper towers in Chicago in 2014 and a 2013 walk across the Colorado River Gorge. He was also the first person to walk across Niagara Falls in 2012.
The Wallendas don’t always make it. In 2017, five members of the troupe were involved in an accident while working without a net as an eight-person pyramid.
