Fans of legendary authors H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury and Robert E. Howard are no doubt familiar with the classic genre magazine Weird Tales, which launched the writing careers of those and countless other literary legends. Founded in 1923, the magazine became an icon of the genre and inspired many of its readers to take up writing themselves – including a young Stephen King, whose first exposure to Weird Tales came from issues once owned by his father. The original publication closed up shop back in 1954, and despite many attempts to revive it, Weird Tales remained mostly dormant until 1988, when it resurfaced in a different format and style than the original. Ownership has changed hands recently to Publisher John Harlacher and Editor-in-Chief Marvin Kaye, who vowed to take the magazine back to its roots. The newly-relaunched Weird Tales began appropriately enough with a Lovecraft theme focusing on Hpl's “Old Ones,” with original stories...

New Orleans - It seems appropriate that when we see Jay Baruchel on the set of "This Is The End" for the first time, he's sitting off to the side of everything, by himself, reading one of Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" books. After all, one of the key dynamics in this film is between Seth Rogen and Jay, their old friendship a point of contention now that Rogen has become a huge movie star. Jay still lives in Canada, and he only comes to La occasionally when he has to do it for work. On one of those trips, he hooks up...

Horror enthusiasts all over the world are invited to read “The Uninvited,” a brand-new iPad app containing original tales of terror and sequential art. This anthology ($2.99) can be found on Apple’s App store, and it features work from contributors far and wide. More multimedia and literary content are planned for future issues, but as for when it happens will depend on the response, and the other struggles along the way.
That also includes embracing the digital generation, where almost any book can be found in electronic form, and adapting the software to run on other tablet computers. An iPhone version is in the works, but as for the desktop computer, who wants that? According to magazine founder, Adam Blainey, these computers aren't designed for reading a lengthy novel or a comic book.
“It works, but it just never caught on for psychological reasons,” says Blainey. Some people are probably afraid of transition.

Vamprynomicon – The Vampire Hunters Book II
Scott M. Baker
(Shadowfire Press)
Within the vaults of the Smithsonian Institute lies the key to finding The Vampyrnomicon, or The Book of the Undead, that contains the history and secrets of the vampires. According to legend, whoever possesses the book can establish a vampire nation on earth – or destroy the undead once and for all. With an opportunity to end the war against the undead so close, Drake Matthews is determined to find the book.
But the vampires also want The Vampyrnomicon. When Master Chiang Shih and her coven of the most powerful and dangerous vampires arrive in Washington to claim the book as their own, the hunters find themselves facing their most deadly enemy yet. With the stakes so high, so is the ferocity of the struggle.

This past weekend at World Horror Con in Brighton, UK, the Horror Writers Association revealed the winners of the 2009 Stoker Awards. The recipients list, for superior achievement in all aspects of horror writing, reads like a who's who, or at least a list of names you should know and will be seeing again.
Also presented was the Lifetime Achievement Award to Brian Lumley and William F. Nolan. The Specialty Press Award went to Ray Russel and Rosalie Parker of Tartarus Press. In addition, the Silver Hammer Award, for outstanding service to the organization, was presented to Kathryn Ptacek while the President's Richard Laymon Service Award went to Vince A. Liaguno.
The awards, named for Dracula scribe Bram Stoker, were special this year in that it was the first time they've been presented outside the North American continent, showing that the Hwa truly strives to be a worldwide entity for horror.

By Blood We Live is a massive anthology of vampire fiction clocking in at 500 pages and nearly a quarter of a million words. The book features stories by some of the top names in horror/fantasy literature including Stephen King, Anne Rice, Neil Gaiman, Harry Turtledove, Tanith Lee, Brian Lumley, and more. However despite the star-power of the authors it fails to escape being labeled “uneven” as is the fate of so many anthologies with such a diverse group of authors.
Adams, who edited Night Shade’s “The Living Dead” has proven himself to be a capable anthologist and he presents many outstanding stories culled from over the past few decades (although most are fairly recent). Stephen King’s “One for the Road” is the oldest story in the collection, originally published in 1977 and collected in King’s “Night Shift”. It is a short side story to King’s vampire...

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 After the hundreds of pages I have written and edited about Richard Matheson, it’s tough to sum up his significance to film and television in a few sentences, but here goes. Start with the movies that would never have been made if he hadn’t written the novels or stories—and in many cases the scripts—first: the Hugo Award-winning The Incredible Shrinking Man, the Emmy Award-winning Duel (Steven Spielberg’s feature-length debut), The Legend of Hell House, Trilogy of Terror (with Karen Black’s Zuni-doll smackdown), the Oscar-nominated Somewhere in Time, the Oscar-winning What Dreams May Come, Stir of Echoes, and a little half-billion-dollar hit called I Am Legend (plus its two previous incarnations, The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man).
