The Westboro Baptist Church probably wishes they had access to an invisibility cloak right about now. J.K. Rowling, the author behind the “Harry Potter” book series, took the hate group to task when they criticized a tweet Rowling posted about Gandalf and Dumbledore now being able to marry in Ireland. A Twitter account associated with the Wbc posted a reply featuring the group’s trademark “God Hates Fags” slogan and saying it would picket the wedding ceremony between the two fictional characters. See photos: Gay Hollywood: 26 Out and Proud Lgbt Stars Here is Rowling’s reply: .@WBCsigns Alas, the sheer...

We subscribe to the "if you don't like it, don't click it" approach to life. If you don't like reading about something, don't click stories about it on the Internet. If you don't like a certain TV show, don't turn to that channel. If you think all gays are going to burn in eternal hellfire and their celebration of pride is revoluting to you, Don't Go To A Gay Pride Parade. Which is why we're constantly baffled every time we see a group of anti-gay protestors with their "God Hates Fags" signs on the sidelines at a gay pride parade (where, it's worth pointing out, no one is bothering anyone). But these bigots got more then they bargained for in Seattle: They got the a...

We hate giving the Westboro Baptist Church attention, or risk making them look at all like a legitimate organization and not a small group of hateful bigots masquerading that hatred as virtue. Because that's all the Wbc wants: Attention. But we're Ok covering their protests when they end like this: The Wbc was set to protest Moore, Okla. this week. They've protested the town thrice before, and this time they were arriving with their "God Hates Fags!" signs, because, as they explain: God has given Moore, Oklahoma many chances to repent...On 5/2/13, God struck Moore with an EF5 tornado, killing 24, injuring 377 others, including many of your children...Not once did a single voice [besides Wbc]...

Did you know that Fred Phelps was a Democrat? I didn't either! But he was. He even received 31 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Kansas in 1992. I know! I knoooow. In later years, of course, Phelps became known for founding the virulently anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church, frequently inciting members of his congregation to picket at military funerals and fundraisers benefiting disaster victims with signs bearing such delightful sentiments as "God Hates Fags" and "Pray For More Dead Soldiers." Because...that's what Jesus would have wanted, I guess? Well, Fred Phelps is dead now, but nevertheless the horrid activities of the church he founded continue unabated - though the parishioners apparently met their match in the town of Moore, Oklahoma on Sunday when they were literally run out of town by an angry mob while picketing at a junior high school. Thankfully no one was hurt,...

Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps died on Wednesday of natural causes. He was 84.
Fred Phelps Dies
Phelps was reported to be in poor health by his son, Nathan Phelps, earlier in the week. At the time, Nathan Phelps revealed that his father was in a hospice facility and “on the edge of death” in a Facebook post. Westboro spokesman Steve Drain, who admitted Fred Phelps was having “health problems” on Monday, confirmed the death.
Throughout his tenure as the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, Phelps was regarded as the “most hated man in America.” Under the guise of religion, Phelps and his followers – who are mostly made up of his family members – protested funerals of slain soldiers and other events. At their protests, the group would hold up signs, which read, “Thank God For Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates Fags.”

The perpetually offensive Westboro Baptist Church announced on Twitter Sunday morning that they will be picketing "Glee" star Cory Monteith's funeral. Monteith was found dead in his hotel room Saturday, July 13. He was 31 years old. TMZ reports the star relapsed into drugs and partying when he was in his native Canada. Shirley Phelps-Roper, one of the more active spokespeople for the group, said that the church was "Glee-ful over God's righteous judgment." In 2008, they crossed the Canadian border to arrive at a funeral of a 22-year-old who was murdered on a Greyhound bus. Their intent was to tell Canadians that the murder was God's response to policies allowing homosexuality, abortion and divorce and remarriage.

The most controversial church in America has a new neighbor that just wants to share a little love. Aaron Jackson recently purchased a house in Topeka, Kan. that happens to be right across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church. You'll remember them as the group that likes to picket the funerals of soldiers killed in action, among other events, and spout message of hate, usually aimed at homosexuals, grabbing for media attention wherever they go.
Jackson, a co-founder of the charitable group Planting Peace, which promotes rainforest conservation and supports orphanages around the world, was looking for a way to help kids who commit suicide after being bullied over Lgbt issues, the Washington Post reports. "I was 'walking' down the street [on Google Earth]," he says, "and saw a for sale sign." When he contacted the real estate agent, he found that the house was no longer for sale. Matt Bomer says it was fantastic to get to film the finale of White Collar on the top of the Empire State building, but there are limits. I missed the passing of out comedian Scott Kennedy last week. Scott was out when it wasn't easy to be out, and traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan more than 50 times to perform for the troops, despite it not being the most welcoming environment. Dave Holmes has a great tribute to the man, and we're left in a world with fewer laughs because of his passing.

The Westboro Baptist Church is known for hate mongering on a scale that borders on the comedic. So perhaps its no surprise that some of the most effective -- not to mention hilarious -- confrontations with the ultra-homophobic and anti-Semitic picketing group have been devised by comedians.
Case in point, this video produced by Australian satirical news team The Chaser, which a few years ago surprised a male member of the church with a little harmless flirtations. Harmless, that is, unless you're a member of the Wbc, which believes that God is punishing America for its acceptance of homosexuality.
In the roughly four-minute clip, which is now going viral again due to the Wbc being in the news this week after threatening to protest the funerals of those involved in the Newtown shooting, The Chaser's Chris Firth shares a little gay lovin' with a protester identified in the video as Fred Phelps Junior.

The hacker group Anonymous is pooling all their resources to attack the nation's most heinous hate purveyors, Westboro Baptist Church.
Led by Shirley Phelps-Roper, the Westboro group has made a name for itself with distasteful demonstrations outside military funerals, public schools, and celebrity memorials.
In perhaps its most disgusting act yet, Westboro has announced plans to picket Sandy Hook Elementary School, the site of the Newtown, Conn. massacre, "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment." The announcement was made via Phelps-Roper's Twitter account, which has since been suspended.
The so-called "hacktivists" at Anonymous, whose previous cyber victims include News Corp. and the Pentagon -- and who recently used their powers for good to out the cyber bullies behind the suicide of teen Amanda Todd -- have responded in kind to Westboro's announcement with a proclamation of their own.

When Shirley MacLaine hit the set of Downton Abbey, she had a single minded focus to find Rob James-Collier, who plays our evil gay footman Thomas. Its plot could have been scribbled on the back of a napkin but God Bless America is a revenge fantasy movie that does the job
Bobcat Goldthwait's violently dyspeptic new black comedy God Bless America is, at heart, a pretty bad movie: dialogue is mainly standup-style rants; the too-spelt-out script feels first-draft, if that, and Bobcat's no better a director than he is a writer. So how come I like it so much?
Here's why: I like it for its cri de coeur qualities, its spirited loathing of stupidity, bullshit, euphemism, cant and a crap, pseudo-patriotic culture based on humiliation and contempt for the audience. If you dug this film up in a time-capsule a century from now it might offer, maybe unwittingly, certain unpalatable truths about the suicidal Tailspin America of today that nobody else is noting.

Kevin Smith's attempt to vilify Christian fanaticism ends up lauding the comforts of religion
The sudden assertion of red-state fundamentalism seems to have dumbfounded America's progressives. There they were with their black president, at last leading the nation towards a civilised future. Who could argue with that? Only the crazies of the flyover badlands. Now, however, these neanderthals have emerged from their trailer-parks to plunge into doubt doctrines that liberals consider unarguable.
It's not the Tea Party's rejection of deficit financing, tax rises or public healthcare that seems to have nonplussed them most. It's the growing onslaught on sodomy, abortion and even science in the name of God. They're finding what they'd thought of as a secular polity threatened by irrational religious imperatives with which they've no means of engaging. You can see why they're a bit cut up.

Kevin Smith's latest film has taken the fight to the fundamentalists – with a little help from his own congregation
Kevin Smith is no stranger to protests. When his religious comedy Dogma was released in 1999, Smith heard of plans to picket cinemas in his home state of New Jersey. So he went to work on protest sign of his own. It read: "Dogma is dogshit" – and he joined the small band of campaigners at his local cinema. He was even interviewed by the regional news station. "I don't think it stands for anything positive," he declared, with a knowing smirk.
But if his fellow Dogma protesters were peacefully disgruntled, the ones incited by his latest film are a good deal more pernicious. I first heard about Red State when Smith visited London in 2006. We were discussing the Dogma protests when talk turned to the Westboro Baptist Church, led by pastor Fred Phelps.

Ugh! We hate even giving them ink because we know that’s exactly what they want, but we think you should be aware that in their ongoing quest for publicity, the horrible people at the Westboro Baptist Church – of “God Hates F**s” fame (ah hate, what a Christian thing to be known for, right?) – plan to picket any memorial or funeral service held for Jackass star Ryan Dunn.
The folks from Westboro, led by disbarred attorney Rev. Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper, are known for these sorts of stunts. They have protested the funerals of soldiers from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, gay hate crime victim Matthew Shepherd and Michael Jackson. They even recorded a song called “God Hates The World,” a play on Jackson’s charity single “We Are the World,” which should not be confused with their summer 2010 jam, “God Hates Lady Gaga – No Poker Face.

After four plus hours of waiting in the bitter-cold, surrounded by protesters affiliated with the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church (along with a pretty impressive counter-protest by students of Park City High School and Kevin Smith supporters), we were finally lead into the Eccles Theater for the Sundance Premiere of Smith's new film, Red State (spoiler-free mini review below). The audience seemed to react well to the film, but in classic Kevin Smith fashion, it was the Q&A following the film that will likely go down as the historic Sundance story. Following the screening, Smith walked out on stage with Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick across his shoulders and explained how Walter Gretzky's motto of being "not where the puck is but where it will be," has directed the last two years of his life. Smith had announced previously that, after the screening, he would be auctioning off Red State,...

Kevin Smith has posted via his own silentbobspeaks.com a teaser poster for Red State, his now finished (more or less) horror movie about a group who encounter extreme fundamentalism in middle America. Start thinking along the lines of God Hates Fags and these lunatics. The poster was created by the assistant to Red State producer Jon Gordon. Smith posted the following up on his website… --- Moody, weird, and pitch-perfect for the tone of the film. If I went out to an ad agency here in town, I’d be billed close to 20 grand for a campaign that’d maybe… maybe… include this poster. But this piece of artwork (I call it “The Holy Ghost”) didn’t come from a top-tier ad agency: Jon Gordon is my Red State producer, and this poster was created by his assistant, Melissa Bloom. Smith himself twittered the first picture from the set of his latest movie, “Red State”. The movie is a horror tale about a bunch of weird kids who have an unpleasant encounter with a fundamentalist preacher based on notorious extremist Fred Phelps, you know, the “God Hates Fags” guy. Phelps also really hates Sweden and was an ardent supporter of Saddam Hussein’s regime. The photo is taken from behind the head of a piano player looking out at what one assumes is the congregation of the church. Beyond that it doesn’t offer a lot of information about the movie. “Red State” stars Michael Parks,...

Ice-t almost lost his iPad in New York today, and Twitter-Wood held its breath for a bit until he announced that one of his "Svu" pals managed to find it unharmed. Ice is calling it a "miracle," and I'm sure lots of iPad owners out there can empathize.
"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" is by far one of most trend-friendly subjects on the Internet right now. Anna Kendrick wants you to see her movie, Duncan Jones called Edgar Wright his geek, and Eli Roth threw his total support behind the film. Find out why down below along with Marlon Wayans anti-WikiLeaks frustrations.

Over three years ago, Erik first shared word with us that Kevin Smith's rumored horror movie had an apt name -- Red State. The filmmaker had been inspired by the religious insanity that is Fred Phelps, so it was a nice play on words merging bloodletting with conservative politics. But Shirley Phelps didn't give a rats tutu about the "boring" film, and that seemed to be the consensus outside the Phelps family as well. Smith had a tough time pulling the money together, and even when it seemed like things were a go for July, the month came and went without any religious horror.
But now Smith has jumped a huge leap forward, snagging a cast for the feature, which will now begin filming on September 22.

Love-struck tweens aren't the only people paying attention to Justin Bieber these days. The "Baby" heartthrob has also attracted the attention of Westboro Baptist Church—and it's not delight they're shrieking with. Bieber has become the most recent target of the Wbc, infamous for their anti-gay vitriol and numerous protests (such as at last week's Comic-Con convention in San Diego). The church—led by Kansas-based pastor Fred Phelps—has lashed out at the singer on its website, and members picketed outside of Bieber's concert at the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Wednesday evening, with their trademark "God Hates Fags" signs in hand. So what's...

The Westboro Baptist Church is a malignant and cancerous offshoot disowned by any Christian organization fit to show its face in public. It's the sort of inverted theology that manages to twist "turn the other cheek" into a euphemism for telling people to kiss your ass. They're quite frankly abominable human beings, who have twisted every essential message of love in their religion of choice into a commandment of judgment and hatred. One of their most enduring trademarks has been the protesting of the funerals of individuals with whom they disagree. The infamous "God Hates Fags" signs made their appearance outside the funerals of as varied a list of individuals as Mr. Rogers, Matthew Shepard and Iraq War veterans. The organization is hardly even an organization so much as a particularly malicious island of a family. Its membership is little more than the extended family of Fred Phelps, the aging...

London, June 26 – ‘Poker Face’ singer Lady Gaga has been branded as “the devil’s spawn” and “a whore face” by a religious group for promoting homosexuality.
The Westboro Baptist Church, which is known for its hatred of homosexuals, targeted the 24-year-old bisexual pop singer over her sizzling, lesbian-themed video ‘Telephone’.
The extremist church group, which has already caused uproar by picketing the funerals of Us servicemen and whose slogan is “God Hates Fags”, claimed Gaga’s image, clothes, songs and pop videos are “blasphemous”.

Megyn Kelly is a bad ass. There, I said it. While debating with Bill O'Reilly on the finer points of Westboro Baptist Church v. Matthew Snyder's father (where the fallen marine's funeral was interrupted by members of the church holding "God Hates Fags" posters), Kelly took the unpopular side that legally, Westboro may have not done anything illegal. O'Reilly disagreed. Things got heated.

You know you're not going to win. You're seated in second-class. You've trodden on someone's dress. Author Neil Gaiman on what it's like to be invisible at the Oscars
There were authors grumbling about not going to the Oscars. I heard about it from friends. "So why are you going?" they asked.
I had written a book called Coraline, which the director Henry Selick had transformed into a stop-motion wonderland. I'd helped Henry as much as I could through the process of turning something from a book into a film. I had endorsed the film, encouraged people to see it, mugged with buttons on an internet trailer. I had also written a 15-second sequence for the Oscars, in which Coraline told an interviewer what winning an Oscar would do for her. I'd assumed that would get me into the Oscars. It didn't. But Henry, as director, had tickets and could decide where they would go,...

Lady Gaga is going to Hell, according to members of a Us church. Westboro Baptist Church claims that Gaga, 23, is a 'God hater' and is leading her millions of teenage fans astray with her provocative songs, performances and support of gay rights. Church attorney and member Shirley Phelps told a Us website: 'She is headed straight to Hell if she doesn’t change her ways. Lady Gaga is promoting a rebellion against God - she needs to get a Bible and change her way of life. 'According to the Bible, homosexuality is an abomination and she has to shut her filthy mouth and stop promoting it.”...

Lady GaGa has sparked controversy with many of her stage performances, but Pastor Fred Phelps and his notorious Westboro Baptist Church see her in a different light as they called her "God-hater". The religious group recently issued a statement titled "God Hates Lady GaGa", which slams the "LoveGame" singer.
In the press release, GaGa is said to have provoked millions of her fans with her controversial songs, raunchy performances and tolerance of homosexuality. "'Art' and 'fashion' are the euphemisms, the guise under which proud whore Lady Gaga teaches rebellion against God," the statement read.
"Does the simple slut truly think that she can change God's standards by seducing a generation of rebels into joining her in fist-raised, stiff-necked, hard-hearted rebellion against Him? Get real!" the statement continued. In the end of the press release, it is written with capital letter read, "you're Going To Hell."

Sacha Baron Cohen in Bruno
Photo: Universal Pictures It's strange to consistently laugh at a film and while you're doing so, lean over to the person next to you and whisper, "This is pretty bad," but that's exactly what I found myself doing while watching Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen's follow-up to the highly successful 2006 effort Borat. This time around Cohen plays the title character, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista who is outcast from the fashion world and decides to head to America in hopes of "becoming the biggest Austrian star since Hitler." The words are funny, the character is funny and several of the climactic moments of each situation are funny, but on a whole it feels like a mash-up of YouTube videos, most of which are never given the time to get to the good stuff with a narrative that never hits its stride. Bruno follows the Borat...

Sacha Baron Cohen is, without doubt, a comedian with balls. In Bruno, his latest feature-length adaptation of one of his three characters from The Ali G Show, the Peter Sellers of the 21st century puts himself in such absurd and sometimes unbelievably real situations that result in him, at various points within the film, being whipped mercilessly by a dominatrix, walking past a “God Hates Fags” protest held by Fred Phelps’s notorious Westboro Baptist Church while helplessly locked in S&M paraphernalia with another man, flamboyantly roaming the Middle East, and finally, making out with another man in a cage match while a shocked and angry audience throw increasingly large objects at him. Throughout all these ordeals, Cohen remains thoroughly and consistently enmeshed as Bruno, never once breaking character even as the situations escalate to absurd proportions. Cohen is a brilliantly talented comedian who has raised the bar of expectations for comedic performance—he may even...

My text-happy friend, who you know has 'txt critic', still wishes to remain anonymous. He's now managed to see Brüno early. Er liebte es. Here's his brief take:
predictably hilarious. even more shocking and envelope pushing than "Borat" and just as funny. but at the same time it's no longer new, so it feels somewhat "safer" as in you know what to expect. Still awesome, though. Gay stuff will keep it from doing Borat $.
And I have no idea how they got an R rating. Interesting to hear that he thinks it's still in the dread Nc-17 range. In a rare bit of multi-platforming (seriously, it's always texts with that one) he sent a follow up email to elaborate... which gets a bit more spoilery. My crowd was largely filled with gay tastemakers and "VIPs" (Ivanka Trump and her loudly-talking douche date were sitting near me), so perhaps the cringeing...
