Spanish auteur Carlos Saura died on Friday of natural causes, the Film Academy of Spain confirmed. He was 91.
In a statement, the org stated: “The Film Academy deeply regrets to announce the death of Carlos Saura, Goya de Honor 2023. Saura, one of the fundamental filmmakers in the history of Spanish cinema, died today at his home at the age of 91, surrounded by his loved ones.”
Born in 1932 in Huesca, Aragon – the same part of Spain as Luis Buñuel, whom he recognised as his mentor – Saura was taken by his family to Madrid during its Civil War. As a child, Saura he listened with horror to its bombings, the trauma of its violence never leaving him, inspiring his third feature, 1965’s “The Hunt,” a portrait of a Franquist ruling class which won him a Berlin Silver Bear.
This crowned him as the leading light of a New Spanish Cinema, an attempt...

Following a successful festival circuit run after its world premiere at San Sebastian, Madrid-based Latido Films is bringing Carlos Saura’s (“Carmen”) inquisitive documentary “Walls Can Talk” (“Las Paredes Hablan”) to Buenos Aires.
Screening as a highlight of Ventana’s Sur’s Spanish Screenings On Tour strand, which seeks to capture the country’s extraordinary output in 2022, the project ponders art in its most primitive, emotive form. Doing so, Saura, now a vigorous near 91, implicitly asks why he has dedicated his now long career, which reaches back to the 1950s, to art, photography, cinema and theater.
With a curious eye and a sympathetic spirit, Saura, whose movies include such classics as “Raise Ravens” and Berlin Golden Bear winner “Deprisa Deprisa,” allows viewers to dissect the paleolithic cave paintings of the Altamira, Chauvet and Lascaux alongside sprawling urban murals crafted by notable street artists Suso 33, Zeta and Musa 71.

Carlos Saura has suffered a minor fall and will no longer attend San Sebastian for the premiere of his latest film, The Walls Can Talk (Las paredes hablan), the festival has said.
In a statement, the festival said Saura’s injuries were not serious but he is no longer able to travel. The Walls Can Talk will still screen on Wednesday as planned as part of the festival’s Rtve Galas.
Produced by María del Puy Alvarado of Malvalanda, the doc is billed as Saura’s take on the origin of art and its relationship with the most avant-garde tendencies. Seen from the Spanish moviemaker’s personal and distinctive point of view, the movie portrays the evolution and relationship of art with walls as a creative canvas, from the first graphic revolutions of the prehistoric caves to the most cutting-edge expressions of urban art.
