Happy anniversary to the Writers Guild of America strike! On May 2, 2023, Hollywood writers officially put their pencils down in an effort to bring compensation closer in line with the revenues generated by their movies and TV shows. A steadfast refusal by studios to engage with writers on some issues led the strike to be prolonged, and eventually, the Screen Actors Guild joined the work stoppage as well.
Fast forward to 2024, and many studios are still trying to get their production schedules back together. Fortunately, it looks to be smooth sailing for getting TV productions on track in 2024, and The Streamable has compiled its traditional list of new titles coming to TV and streaming every day this week to help you keep track of what’s coming back when.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Season 4 comes to a close on Monday, May 13, and spinning the wheel this week are Neil deGrasse Tyson, Veep‘s Tony Hale, and A Black Lady Sketch Show‘s Robin Thede. TV Insider has an exclusive look into their face-off that shows the stars trying to solve a puzzle about fame. Fitting! The Bonus Round category is “People,” and the players start out with little help from the letters they call in the clip above. Thede, Hale, and Tyson each guess a letter that only has one space on the board, and Thede cracks up the audience when she sarcastically says “cool” in response to the excess of blank spaces. Hale gives a throwaway guess with “mandarine oranges,” and Tyson has no ideas for what the puzzle could read. When it’s Thede’s turn again, she guesses an “a,” of which there are two in the puzzle.

Taking place amid the crush of parties surrounding the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala — with its black-tie Black designer dress code — drew one of the most gorgeously turned out crowds of the entire bash-filled weekend.
Held for the first time in L.A. and hosted by Robin Thede, the gala raised money for the nonprofit equity organization Fifteen Percent Pledge, founded by Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, which asks retailers to devote 15 percent of shelf space to products from Black-owned brands.
First Lady Jill Biden, wearing designer Sergio Hudson, made a surprise appearance at the event, held on the lot at Paramount Studios. She touted the achievements her husband’s administration has made to help small and minority-owned businesses (including doubling the amount of loans given by the government to small Black-owned companies) and praised James for founding the Fifteen Percent Pledge in the wake...

Who doesn’t love a group photo packed with big-name actors?
A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Writers from late-night shows including Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show and The Late Show among others are heading to the Primetime Emmys after the Television Academy performed a U-turn on its decision to exclude a key writing category from the main awards.

Taraji P. Henson got real when talking about the pay disparity in Hollywood and opened up about the struggle she continues to face despite her success in the industry.
While making an appearance on Gayle King’s SiriusXM show to promote The Color Purple, Henson broke down in tears as she talked about getting underpaid for her work and almost quitting the industry altogether.
“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do, getting paid a fraction of the cost,” Henson said after taking a long pause and breaking down. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ I have to. The math ain’t math-ing. And you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone.

The event was hosted at The Beverly Hills Hotel, and it was attended by the likes of Adele, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren and Camila Cabello. That is barely scratching the surface, too.
In all, more than 40 stars were on the guestlist.
Since there were so many stars in attendance, we pulled together a complete rundown with photos and as many fashion credits as possible. That way you can see who was there and what they were wearing.

It seems streaming services have realised in the last few years that a good Christmas film is worth putting some money behind. Literally millions of movie watchers, and even people that don’t watch a whole lot of movies, are always willing to watch one at this time of year. Especially family-friendly films. Amazon Prime have got in experienced director Reginald Hudlin, and leading (and legendary) actor Eddie Murphy to headline Candy Cane Lane.

Candy Cane Lane, Prime Video’s latest Christmas movie with a zany twist, comes just the day after Netflix’s Family Switch, which also happens to be a Christmas comedy with a zany twist. That’s quite alright, though, given that it’s that time of year when we are bound to get a lot of these kinds of movies, all aiming to bring us holiday cheer. With Eddie Murphy heading Candy Cane Lane, the movie is destined to receive more attention than its peers. Although Murphy’s last two releases, the romantic comedy titled You People that came earlier this year and Coming 2 America (2021), a sequel to Murphy’s own hit Coming to America (1988), were pretty much duds, we all know what Murphy can do. The 2019 biographical comedy Dolomite is My Name is a shining example of that. Naturally, Candy Cane Lane, despite being another Christmas movie, comes with a lot of expectations.

Believe it or not, Eddie Murphy never has attempted to dive into the holiday movie genre in his 40-year-plus career in films, but with Candy Cane Lane he has found an ideal premise to add to his ever-growing filmography of family-friendly comedies along the lines of Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle, and countless others.
He reunites after 30 years with his Boomerang director Reginald Hudlin, along with screenwriter Kelly Younger. The latter came up with the idea based on his own experiences growing up in El Segundo, CA, and spending time every Christmas on the real Candy Cane Lane, a local event created in 1949 showcasing a neighborhood that dazzles with its decorations, with each family trying to outdo the other in spectacular holiday fashion.
It wasn’t much of a leap to invent an all-out special effects-driven action comedy fantasy around the setting, and that is exactly what they done. And...

After being forced to push the Season 3 premiere date for its hit comedy Ghosts to February 15, 2024 amidst this summer’s dual strikes, CBS is readying for its return to production, star Danielle Pinnock has revealed.
“We start shooting on Saturday. I fly down to Montreal. We’re going back, baby!” exclaimed Pinnock tonight, in conversation with Deadline at the red carpet premiere for her new Amazon MGM holiday film, Candy Cane Lane. “We did a table read — those scripts are good!”
Pinnock expects the show to shoot “only 10 episodes this season,” rather than the 18+ that have been put out in its first two go-rounds, because of both strike-forced delays and the fact that her co-star Sheila Carrasco is expecting her first child. Still, she teased, “those episodes are fierce and the audiences should prepare themselves.”

Eddie Murphy returns with his big, goofy smile in the new trailer for the family Christmas comedy Candy Cane Lane from Prime Video. Murphy is reunited with director Reginald Hudlin, who directed him in the 1992 comedy Boomerang. While Boomerang was a very adult-oriented film, this new film jumps over to the other side of the spectrum with a family-friendly tone. While earlier images and trailers showcased more of a Christmas decoration-type comedy, the new footage reveals an adventure aspect as Jillian Bell, who plays the magical elf, Pepper, shows to be more trouble than previously thought.

There’s just one problem with Ziwe’s first book of personal essays: She really hates getting personal. “I don’t want anyone to know anything about me,” she says with a laugh while Zooming from her home in New York. “I hate sharing.”
The comedian and writer became famous for her uncomfortable, nearly satirical interviews with stars about racial and gender politics. Starting on Instagram Live and eventually pivoting to an eponymous, two-season Showtime series, she’s not comfortable being on the receiving end of a personal line of questioning. But Ziwe — who spent years in the writers rooms of The Rundown With Robin Thede, Desus & Mero and Dickinson — realized she needed to “chip away at the wall” she’d put up. The resulting collection, Black Friend, due Oct. 17 from Abrams, reflects on her relationship to such topics as identity, body image and code-switching.

Candy Cane Lane from Prime Video is that cautionary tale for being careful what you wish for. Eddie Murphy adds to his family-friendly movie filmography with this new Christmas comedy from Reginald Hudlin, who brought us House Party and directed Murphy in 1992’s Boomerang. Prime Video recently released the details, images and poster. Today, Amazon has released the trailer for the new holiday film.
The official synopsis from Amazon reads,
“Eddie Murphy stars in this holiday comedy adventure about a man on a mission to win his neighborhood’s annual Christmas home decoration contest. Eddie Murphy has spent much of the last 27 years making kid-friendly flicks like “Imagine That” and “Daddy Daycare.” As such, it’s a little surprising that “Candy Cane Lane” represents his first Christmas/holiday flick. That’s the hook for this latest Amazon Prime original feature.
This brief teaser doesn’t so much explain the premise as lays out the protagonist, showing Murphy as a loving husband and father who nonetheless takes the concept of Christmas decorations a bit too far. He essentially sells his soul to a magical elf played by Jillian Bell for a holiday-related wish. Alas, much to his family’s chagrin, that wish is not world peace or a new album from Drake.
Murphy’s wish causes a spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, unleashing PG-rated chaos on the town. One can surmise that all parties learn that Christmas is not about winning...

Eddie Murphy is facing off with angry geese, enchanted ceramic Christmas villagers and one havoc-wreaking elf in the first trailer for Candy Cane Lane.
Prime Video released the teaser for Eddie Murphy’s first holiday film on Thursday, offering a fuller look at the adventure comedy where Christmas wishes go awry. The film reunites the actor and comedian with director Reginald Hudlin and producer Brian Grazer for the first time since 1992’s Boomerang.
Murphy stars as Chris Carver, a man on a mission to win his annual Christmas home decoration contest — a desire not shared by his rather exasperated family. But when he and his youngest daughter stumble upon a Christmas store, his dream of “the best Christmas ever” — winning the contest — becomes a nightmare after an elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell) grants his wish, literally.

When actress Yvette Nicole Brown first heard that California Gov. Gavin Newsom had appointed Laphonza Butler to serve as U.S. Senator on Oct. 1, filling the seat left vacant following the death of longstanding Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein, her immediate thought was, “Of course.” Having been a part of the search committee that ushered in Butler’s historic appointment to president of EMILYs List in 2021, Brown has witnessed the newly minted politician’s leadership firsthand.
“She was instantly a rock star,” says the EMILYs List board member. “She was the first woman of color — Black woman — to lead EMILYs List. She was the first mother we ever had. That brought a whole other energy to what we were doing as an organization.
“When you meet her and get to talk to her, she’s a straight shooter,” adds Brown. “She’s confident and kind and smart, and down for diversity in...
