On the night of January 24, 2023, in Mississippi, six members of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office kicked in the front door of a house without a warrant.
For an hour and a half, these Mississippi officers — members of the self-named Goon Squad — tortured two Black men, Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins. These officers used stun guns on the men repeatedly while yelling racial slurs. They beat them with their fists and batons, and abused them with a sex toy. And then one of the cops shoved his gun in Mr.

Lava for Good co-founders Jason Flom and Jeff Kempler, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King, will partner with Oscar-winning film and television producer Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment and Primary Wave Music to develop and produce a multi-season scripted television series inspired by Lava for Good’s award-winning podcast Bone Valley. Veteran screenwriter and TV producer Dana Stevens will adapt.
Written and hosted by King along with producer and researcher Kelsey Decker, the show chronicles the chilling story of Leo Schofield, the Central Florida man who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for killing his wife, Michelle. Schofield has spent over three decades in prison — even after another incarcerated man, Jeremy Scott, confessed in detail to the crime. The attention that King and the podcast have brought to the case was cited in Schofield’s most recent parole hearing in May of 2023, which resulted in Schofield being transferred to the Everglades Re-Entry Center.

Just hours after Lizzo was hit with a second lawsuit with claims of creating a hostile work environment, the star accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition (Bmac) gala in Los Angeles.
After skipping the red carpet portion of the evening, Lizzo took the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel following an introduction by a group of her Big Grrrl dancers. Wiping away tears, she told the crowd, “I really needed this right now. God’s timing is on time.”
“I didn’t write a speech because I don’t know what to say in times like these,” Lizzo continued, thanking Bmac for the honor and noting that this award was different than others she has won because “humanitarianism in its nature is thankless, it’s selfless. To be kind to someone isn’t a talent; everyone can do it, it’s a gift that you give.

Toforest Johnson has spent the last 25 years on Alabama’s death row for the murder of a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy — a crime he and many others insist he did not commit. To shed light on this wrongful conviction, award-winning platform Lava for Good has launched Earwitness, an 8-episode podcast docuseries that documents investigative journalist Beth Shelburne’s multi-year investigation into the case.
In the Toforest Johnson case, over the course of four jury trials, the same prosecutors presented five different, conflicting accounts of who committed the murder of a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy. Johnson was the only person convicted of the murder, although the State presented no forensic evidence, no physical evidence, and no eyewitness testimony linking Johnson to the murder.
The case against Johnson focused on the testimony of a single ‘earwitness’ — a woman who claimed she overheard a confession on a jailhouse phone call. She was...

Lizzo is set to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at this year’s Black Music Action Coalition gala, with the honor coming as the singer faces a lawsuit from her former dancers accusing her of a toxic work environment.
Epic Records CEO Sylvia Rhone is also set to be honored at the event with the Bmac Clarence Avant Trailblazer Award, joining the previously announced Jermaine Dupri in receiving the honor. Rhone — who became the first Black woman to be named CEO of a major record label owned by a Fortune 500 company when she took on her role in 2019 — will receive the award named after the late music executive who served on the Bmac advisory board.

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. spoke about the future of late-night TV at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime, saying he believes studios don’t realize that the more they look to downsize shows, the more likely they will face stiff competition from TikTok creators and other social media stars who can retain the rights to their content.
“I think the cheaper that they choose to make the product, the more accessible and affordable you make it for outside competitors to come in,” Wood Jr. said, when answering a question about if he was interested in hosting the Comedy Central talker following the exit of Trevor Noah, or any late-night show, in general.
“That’s the thing that I don’t think the entertainment studios understand is, if you want to get rid of an audience if you want to make the show a little smaller,...

Today, Leo Schofield, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in Central Florida more than three decades ago, was denied parole and instead the parole board recommended he be transferred to the Everglades Re-Entry Center, where he will remain until his next opportunity for parole. The board agreed to reconsider parole in 12 months. The decision was made during a parole hearing held this morning in Tallahassee, where Schofield's case was reviewed.
Schofield's case has received extensive coverage from both local and international press following the launch of the award-winning Bone Valley podcast, which put it in the national spotlight last year. The Lava for Good podcast, written and hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Gilbert King and co-host Kelsey Decker, uncovered overwhelming evidence of Schofield's innocence and delivered detailed confessions from the actual killer of Leo’s wife Michelle.

Despite premiering at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, ranking among Hulu’s most-watched documentaries and garnering high-profile support, Sabrina Van Tassel’s “The State of Texas vs. Melissa” hasn’t yet succeeded in changing the fate of Melissa Lucio.
The first Hispanic woman sentenced to death row in Texas, Lucio has been in prison for 14 years and was just given an execution date for April 27. Lucio was blamed for the abuse and subsequent death of her two-year-old daughter, which she has claimed was accidental.
Van Tassel’s documentary shows how Lucio was coerced by a Texas Ranger to make incriminating statements after hours of questioning. Based on a thorough investigation conducted by Van Tassel over several years, the doc reveals how the system was stacked against Lucio — from the court-appointed attorney, who withheld certain evidence, to the District Attorney, who is serving a sentence for bribery and corruption.

Hero the Band is looking for its big break. In a different kind of year, the Atlanta rock quartet, a recent signing for Jason Flom’s Lava Records, would be hitting the festival circuit to pick up an opening gig for a bigger act and build up their fanbase in person. With the pandemic stretching its dark shadow over the entire live music circuit, the band and the label have veered toward a much less orthodox plan: They’ll roll out an album in the form of a scripted narrative podcast.

On a recent Sunday morning, music executive Jason Flom was cruising up the west side of Manhattan in his gray Bentley, going 57 in a 50, and enlivening the familiar drive to Sing Sing prison with the story of a letter he got some years back. “I opened it, and it said, ‘Dear Jason, you don’t know me, but you got me pregnant.’” He pauses, hands at 10 and two, blue eyes widening in a face that has been likened to a Marx brothers’ mug. “Not a good opening statement, so to speak.

Kim Kardashian’s role as a criminal justice advocate didn’t end when she convinced President Donald Trump to commute Alice Marie Johnson’s life sentence back in June; the reality star and lifestyle mogul has “connected” with Chris Young, another Tennessee prisoner serving a life sentence on drug charges thanks to mandatory-sentencing regulations.
“It’s so unfair,” Kardashian said in an interview on Jason Flom’s Wrongful Conviction podcast. “[Chris Young] is 30 years old. He’s been in for almost 10 years.”

She's back at the White House! According to TMZ, Kim Kardashian flew to Washington DC in the middle of the night on Sept. 5 for a face-to-face meeting with President Trump. The Kuwtk star is continuing her prison reform mission — a cause that Kim has passionately advocated for since she learned about Alice Marie Johnson. Alice is a 63-year-old great-grandmother and former inmate who had been serving a life sentence since 1996 when she was convicted of a non-violent, drug-related crime. It was her first offense. Thanks to Kim's lobbying efforts, the president granted Alice clemency on June 6 and now, Kim is hoping to do the same for another inmate named Chris Young. Speaking with Jason Flom, host of the Wrongful Conviction podcast, the-mother-of-three revealed that she spoke on the phone with Chris and promised to fight for his freedom. Chris is 30 years old and has been incarcerated for nearly 10 years. He...

When Governors Ball once again lands on New York's Randall's Island next month, the 3-year-old festival will mushroom to three days and bring with it the likes of Kanye West, Guns N Roses, Kings of Leon, Nas and plenty of other big names. That's a far cry from its origins in 2011, when it was a one-day, 12-act walk in the park.
"The plan was always to grow the festival bigger and better each year, but to do so organically," says Jordan Wolowitz, one of the three partners of Founders Entertainment, which puts on the entire event. "We had a lot of positive feedback the last two years, both from the public and the music industry. By analyzing the landscape of where the festival industry and culture in the United States was going, we decided that 2013 was the year to expand to three years. We felt New York was ready for...

NEW YORK -- EMI on Thursday named former Warner Music Group chairman and CEO Roger Ames head of EMI Music North America. He will have offices in Los Angeles and New York and report to EMI CEO Eric Nicoli.
Ames is familiar with EMI's operations, having served as a senior adviser to the company since March 2005. And in 1999, shortly after taking the reins of WMG, he led an ill-fated attempt to merge Warner Music and EMI. The deal was scrapped when it became apparent that it would not bear up to scrutiny from the European Commission.
In Ames' new role, the North American label heads including Capitol Music Group head Jason Flom -- a WMG alum who has served under Ames -- will report into Ames, as will EMI Music Marketing topper Ronn Werre.
In a related move, Ivan Gavin is exiting his post as COO of EMI Music. The company does not plan to name a replacement, a source close to EMI said.

NEW YORK -- EMI is merging its North American pop, rock and urban operations.
The company announced plans Thursday to combine its Capitol and Virgin labels into a single unit called the Capitol Music Group.
The Capitol and Virgin Records imprints will survive, but the company is streamlining its executive and staffing ranks.
As part of the restructuring, Jason Flom -- who joined EMI as chairman and CEO of Virgin in November 2005 -- is named chairman and CEO of the new organization. He reports to EMI Group CEO Eric Nicoli and will now oversee the combined Capitol and Virgin rosters in the U.S.
Capitol president and CEO Andrew Slater is stepping down from his post of six years.
"Jason Flom quickly demonstrated his leadership and artist development abilities since he has been at Virgin," Nicoli said. "I am confident that he will take us to new levels of success."
The shake-up is part of EMI Group's recently announced effort to deliver $217 million in annual savings across its business.
