Review Ron Hogan 16 Jul 2013 - 07:50
Falling Skies takes the Masons out of Charleston this week, in another well-directed episode. Here's Ron's review of The Pickett Line...
This review contains spoilers.
3.7 The Pickett Line
The Mason family is on a road trip to be reunited with Anne and baby Alexis, but there's a little problem. Not only are they chasing a cold trail; they're being pursued. If it's not one thing - an armed alien task force of skitters and mechs and mega-mechs - it's another in the form of highwaymen. The robbers are people we later find out are the Pickett family, a bizarro world version of the Masons, except with a few extra people involved. Where Tom and his family always do the right thing, even if it makes survival tough, the Picketts have decided to take the easy way out.
Director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan has put together another fine-looking episode.

Director: Sergio Mimica-Gezzan. Writers: Robert Rodat, Heather V. Regnier and Jordan Rosenberg. Epis. 7 of Seas. 3 on "Falling Skies" was titled "The Pickett Line." In this episode, there were a few reveals and lots of conflict. The Mason family seems to have bitten off more than they can chew as they tangle with a family of bandits and the local Overlords. Another plot reveal showed who the spy was in Charleston. And, Pope (Colin Cunningham) continues to aggravate almost everyone around him. "The Pickett Line" was hit and miss with the drama, but full of compelling action. The show began with the Masons on the road. They are heading to Mechanicsville, in search of Tom's (Noah Wyle) wife, Anne (Moon Bloodgood), and their alien baby. Their journey is interrupted by a group of bandits, who rob them at gunpoint. The next few scenes involve Tom and the Pickett family wrestling for control of an isolated farm.

Director: Sergio Mimica-Gezzan. Writers: Robert Rodat and Jordan Rosenberg. Executive Producer: Steven Spielberg. "Falling Skies" is now halfway through its third season. Epis. 5, titled "Search and Recover," of Seas. 3 brings several familiar characters to the forefront, during an ongoing alien invasion. Fans who are familiar with the show might have noticed a major slowdown in this season and especially in this episode. The story in "Search and Recovery" moves ahead with baby steps, despite an alien invasion taking place in the background. Instead, events here focus on characterizations, melodrama and forced sequences, which left much to be desired. Fans unfamiliar with this episode will have to look back to reviews of previous episodes on 28Dla to find out what has happened in earlier seasons. But, this episode focused on two separate and likely converging stories. Characters Tom (Noah Wyle) and Pope (Colin Cunningham) recover from a plane crash, which leads to "Max.

Falling Skies Episode 305
“Search and Recover”
Written By: Jordan Rosenberg
Directed By: Sergio Mimica-Gezzan
Original Airdate: 30 June 2013
In This Episode...
Tom pulls an unconscious Pope out of the downed plane moments before it explodes. Bressler was dead on impact. They wait until the ships overhead pass, then have to kill a couple skitters before Tom decides it is time to head back to Charleston. Of course, Charleston is a good 400 miles away, so they are going to have to learn to live with one another. On their first night together in the woods, the men kinda-sorta bond over their troubled pasts. When Pope mocks Tom for what he assumes was an idyllic childhood, Tom puts him in his place by revealing that his father was a violent drunk - the only thing idyllic was the fact that he survived. In turn, Pope tells Tom that a man in a Cadillac almost ran over his son.

Falling Skies puts its two most interesting characters front and centre this week, and is all the better for it...
This review contains spoilers.
3.5 Search and Recover
The fifth episode of the season for Falling Skies is one I've been waiting for since the events of last week. Basically, this week's instalment promised a Pope and Mason festival, and do we ever get it. The show's best actor and best-defined character together for the bulk of an episode? Thank you very much, Falling Skies. It's strange to see that after all this time, Mason and Pope don't get along, but it's nice to see them fighting with one another. They're very complementary characters, each filling in the gaps of the other in the show sense, and when you've got the star (Noah Wylie) and the break-out actor (Colin Cunningham) together in the A plot,...
