- Former German soccer player, who also worked as a coach and has been technical director of German Football Association since 2006.
- During his professional career, he played for Dynamo Dresden (1985-1990), VfB Stuttgart (1990-1992), Inter Milan (1992) and Borussia Dortmund (1992-1998). He won two East German championships (1989, 1990) and three Bundesliga titles (1992, 1995, 1996) as well as the Champions League in 1997.
- Retiring with 74 caps for the national side (23 for East Germany, 51 for Germany), he became European Champion in 1996. He was the last player to score a goal for East Germany's national side before the reunification.
- Lives in Munich with his wife and their children Sarah, Marvin-Matthias and Leon.
- Chosen European Footballer of the Year in 1996 and German Footballer of the Year in 1995 and 1996.
