Leo Reich’s first solo stand-up comedy special Leo Reich: Literally Who Cares?! debuts this December on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Following rave reviews at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and an Off-Broadway run, the special from A24 taped at EartH in London this fall.
Leo Reich, star and executive producer, quote: “To have been given the opportunity to turn this flamboyant, odd, over-the-top, exhausting show into a comedy special is a dream come true in itself. But to have been able to do it with A24 and HBO is beyond a dream. Being able to make something with the most creative production house for the most innovative network is a privilege that usually only befalls like, Zendaya. I’m honored that these storied institutions are risking their impeccable reputations by putting their names to my gay little comedy show. God bless them. Their funeral!”

Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee made history on Sunday, when they became the first nonbinary-identifying people to win an individual acting prize at the 76th annual Tony Awards, breaking the glass for LGBTQ performers at the annual Broadway celebration.
Newell won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for their show-stopping performance in Shucked and Ghee won the prize for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Some Like It Hot, becoming the first nonbinary performer to win the category.
“I have wanted this my entire life. And I thank each and every one of you in this room,” Newell said while taking the stage at the United Palace Theatre, during the 2023 ceremony hosted by Ariana DeBose.
Speaking directly to their mother, who was in the audience, Newell shared, “Mommy, I love you. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for loving me unconditionally.

Newell and Ghee accepted their honors during Sunday night’s 2023 Tony Awards ceremony, which took place at the United Palace in New York’s Washington Heights and honored the 2022-23 season’s best work.
During Newell’s speech, they expressed how the Tony win was something they had wanted their entire life, while also giving a special thanks to the Shucked ensemble, crew and creative team alongside their mother, “for loving me unconditionally” and “teaching me what strength is.”

New location? No script? No rehearsal? No sweat.
Welcome to the 2023 Tony Awards, a show with an extra jolt of electricity this time due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.
Unpredictability has been inserted into what is usually an upbeat, safe and chummy night. The strike has left Broadway’s biggest night without a script, in a new venue far from the theatre district.
A 1 1/2-hour pre-show on Pluto TV from 6:30-8 p.m. Eastern, hosted by Julianne Hough and Skylar Astin, will then throw to the three-hour main event led by Ariana DeBose on CBS and Paramount+ starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
A total of 26 Tony Awards will be handed out Sunday for a season that had 40 new productions — 15 musicals, 24 plays and one special engagement during the first post-pandemic full season.

Playing at the historic Pantages Theater through Saturday, West End phenomenon and Tony-winning musical Six has finally made its way to Hollywood.
Six’s co-creators and writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss never planned for more than a few hundred people to see their modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII.
“It was low stakes,” Marlow remembers about writing the show during their final year of university at Cambridge in 2017. “But we were nervous about it. It was the first time that we were writing something like that together. It was gonna be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We didn’t want to embarrass ourselves in front of our year group with writing something that was really bad.
But with graduation just around the corner, the friends were mostly concerned with passing their exams than writing Broadway’s next great hit. “We would meet...

J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell appear to have made history Tuesday as the first openly nonbinary actors to be nominated for Tony Awards.
The two were nominated in the categories of best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical, in the case of Ghee for their role in Some Like It Hot, and best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical, in the case of Newell for their role in Shucked. Newell uses all pronouns while Ghee uses he/they pronouns.
Both actors view the nominations Tuesday as a sign of progress in the industry, even as there is still a ways to go, as the Tony Awards categories remain gendered.
“It’s a step in the right direction, because there are so many gender non-conforming and nonbinary performers that might not ever get to shine because of these gendered categories,...

As much fun as it was to see music's biggest names get honored at the 2023 Grammy Awards on Feb. 5, it was also a highlight to cheer for all the artists who picked up their very first wins this year.
The 2023 freshman class was packed with rising talent who are just getting started on their music careers, but they're not all lesser-known names. One of the biggest Grammys categories is, of course, best new artist, where the Recording Academy recognizes the brightest up-and-coming stars. This year, Anitta, Omar Apollo, Domi & Jd Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Maneskin, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg were all nominated, but Joy took home the award (and delivered a gracious acceptance speech for the honor).
Other Grammy categories had a high number of first-timers, too. The best rock album category, for instance, featured the first career Grammy nominations for Machine Gun Kelly (who...

Photo: The 2022 Tony Awards The Recap This year’s Tony Awards featured an excellent selection of shows, with many of the categories being a toss-up right up until the winner was announced. Myles Frost and Deirdre O’Connell, in particular, earned pleasantly surprising wins. O’Connell herself acknowledged the unconventionality of Dana H. in her acceptance speech, saying “Please let me standing here be a little sign to you from the universe to make the weird art.” Speaking of unconventionality, Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop won Best Musical to a standing ovation. Jackson’s hyper-meta, uncompromising take on being a black, queer writer took audiences by storm, and Jackson himself showed up in a hot pink, cape-length overcoat to match the hype. The 75th annual Tony Awards drew an audience of 3.86 million viewers on Sunday, which is up 39 from last year’s hybrid telecast.
The awards show was also streamed on Paramount+ and other CBS platforms, where viewership was up 30, according to CBS. It marked the most-viewed livestream to date on digital platforms.
As for ratings, data on how the show fared among the key 18-49 demographic are not yet available.
This was the first traditional Tony Awards since 2019, after the show was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. Last year, the Tonys opted for a hybrid special titled “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back,” where some awards were also handed out.

The Best Original Score prize is always one of the most coveted prizes at the Tony Awards. This year, the race is also one of the most competitive, pitting Michael R. Jackson’s music and lyrics for “A Strange Loop” against Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ work for “Six: The Musical.” In recent weeks, “A Strange Loop” has pulled ahead of “Six” in our combined odds as the clear frontrunner for Best Musical, so does that mean it has an edge in the contest for score as well? How often do the two awards go hand in hand?

Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.
Tony Awards frontrunners mostly dominated the production categories. Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.
The winners of the Drama League’s inaugural categories for direction of a musical and play went to Marianne Elliott (“Company”) and Kate Whoriskey (“Clyde’s”), respectively. Elliott sits far out front in the corresponding Tony race, though Whoriskey’s triumph comes as a surprise. This frequent collaborator of Lynn Nottage failed to earn a Tony nomination,...

While the League doles out four production prizes, what makes them unique is their “Distinguished Performance” award. In March of last year, the new musical “Six” was literally minutes away from opening on Broadway when the coronavirus pandemic halted its performance. Eighteen months later, the musical by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow has officially bowed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Oct. 3, the second new production of the 2021-2022 season.
Moss and Marlow wrote the music, lyrics, and book for this reimagining of the six wives of King Henry VIII as their varyingly unfortunate tales of abuse, neglect, and, yes, beheading get remixed into contemporary pop confections performed concert-style as they attempt to name a leader of their band. The multi-hyphenate Moss also directs the musical with Jamie Armitage. The six wives are portrayed by Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Brittney Mack, Abby Mueller, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele.

Gallows humor – and after the last 18 months, can there be any other kind? – is in exuberant form at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where the terrific new musical Six just had its long-in-coming opening night.
Originally set to open on March 12, 2020 – Covid had other plans – Six and its sextet of singing, dancing queens has lost none of its vitality and charm over the ensuing months of darkness. If anything, the musical seems even more joyous for the time away. Take that, virus.
As unlikely a musical as the one with dancing cats, and, if Broadway stays healthy fiscally and otherwise, potentially as durable, Six mashes together history’s most compelling marriage stories with the brightest musical styles streaming today.

The pop musical Six was set to debut on Broadway on March 12th, but that never happened, since the coronavirus pandemic prompted New York to shut down all productions to halt the spread of Covid-19. The cheeky musical — which had already been a hit in the U.K. — took the doomed wives of King Henry VIII and refashioned them as the saucy members of a girl group thanks to Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the two twentysomethings who wrote the show’s original music and lyrics.

The first new musical of 2019-2020 Broadway season, “Moulin Rouge!,” is a sumptuous stage adaptation of Baz Lurhman’s film and the “spectacular spectacular” production will draw in crowds like moths to a flame. The tuner is bound to scoop up a slew of Tony nominations next April, but Original Score won’t be among them. Every Best Musical winner since 2013 has claimed the Original Score trophy, but jukebox musicals like this one aren’t eligible for that prize.
