The Berlin Film Festival officially kicked off Thursday evening with an eventful opening ceremony at the Berlinale Palast theater in the German capital.
After a divisive build-up to the fest, the opening ceremony was, in contrast, a relatively conventional affair. High-profile attendees included veteran German filmmakers Wim Wenders and Fatih Akin, Phantom Thread actress Vicky Krieps, and international jury president Lupita Nyong’o alongside her fellow jury members Brady Corbet, Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Albert Serra, Jasmine Trinca and Oksana Zabuzhko.
The evening’s opening film was Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, who was in attendance with producer Matt Damon and co-star Emily Watson. Directed by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders), Small Things Like These is the first Irish film to open the Berlinale.

After kicking off with a feisty press conference, the Berlin Film Festival got even more political as three groups of protesters descended on Potsdamer Platz before the start of opening night festivities.
The first saw around 50 members of the film industry walk the red carpet holding hands. The demonstrators then turned on their phone flashlights and chanted “defend democracy!” while the same phrase was displayed on the Palast’s big screen. The red carpet’s music was turned off for the occasion, and the demonstrators wore pins stating “movies unite, hate divides.” Berlinale organizers had planned this demonstration to highlight their decision to disinvite members of the far-right political party AfD.
Among the talent was Jonathan Berlin, Meret Becker, Luisa Gaffron, Pegah Ferydoni, Roshanak Khodabakhsh Anne Leppin, Jannis Niewöhner, Murali Perumal, Katja Riemann, Lavinia Wilson and Jessica Schwarz.

FX’s A Murder at the End of the World limited series finale has arrived, and with it the shocking revelation of the killer’s identity. Episode seven, “Retreat,” begins with all the guests gathered 164’ underground in Andy’s suite. Andy (Clive Owen) talks about why Ray – his AI assistant – chose that depth, revealing it was because Andy asked him to protect his family from anything that could happen on the surface of the earth.
As Andy continues to discuss Ray, he brings the conversation back around to how someone is trying to tarnish his reputation. Andy declares that he’s going to keep everyone there until he figures out who’s setting him up.
Lu Mei (Joan Chen) didn’t betray him and is still confused about why he invited her.

FX’s new murder mystery series A Murder at the End of the World follows Darby Hart (The Crown’s Emma Corrin), an amateur sleuth and tech-savvy hacker affectionately referred to as a Gen Z Sherlock Holmes. One of nine guests invited to a billionaire’s remote estate, Darby’s skills are put to the test when one of the guests is murdered.
Episode one of the seven-episode limited series opens with Darby presenting the true crime memoir she wrote, The Silver Doe, to a bookstore audience. A bit awkward and shy, she begins to tell them about a murder victim. It’s obvious she was obsessed with the case, drawn to it in part because she’s the coroner’s daughter.

Readying to share an excerpt from her first book, an author stands at the podium and warns the room she’s going to start with the ending. “I was told you’re not meant to do that at these readings,” she says, “but I’m going to do it anyway.” Ultimately, Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) omits a few key details of her favored passage — she’s there to sell books, after all, and has to hook an audience who initially showed up to hear from another writer — but the choice speaks volumes about who she is and what her true crime story is designed to do. It’s not about whoever’s waiting at the end of the investigation; it’s not about studying a killer, learning from his twisted psyche, or even catching him. Instead, Darby’s account invites readers to reconsider what’s right in front of them,...

We are at a place where humanity exists between two spheres. The “real world” is our tangible environment. We can touch things, unpacking textures, tastes and scents. And then, there is another world. Though artificial, and born of the internet and technology, AI is more life-like than ever. Innovation, after all, is infinite. While many of us glide between both sectors, Gen Z and the Alpha generation are coming of age, having only ever been interconnected and heavily online. For better or for worse, this way of living will affect human beings until it all goes dark.
For Darby Hart (a captivating Emma Corrin), the character at the center of creators/directors Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s ominous but wholly fascinating “A Murder at the End of the World,” tech and the internet are lifelines. Toward the end of “A Murder at the End of the World,” Ziba (Pegah Ferydoni), one of the guests staying at a billionaire’s Icelandic bunker, sums up the horror of the A.I. technology that the tech giant whose retreat they’re attending has created. Ray, the name given to the humanized smart computer overseeing every guest’s whim, is “an us, without feeling.” The line is not simply meant to highlight the danger of the soullessness of artificial intelligence— how, as many critics of theChat Gpt era would say, advanced technology can never replicate our ineffable humanity, no matter how impressively it spits things out of its data churner.
The real terror is the “us” part. If A.I. takes our data and reflects ourselves back to us, it is a mirror of an often disfigured society.

FX’s A Murder at the End of the World, a limited series from the creators of The O.A. starring Emma Corrin, has become the first TV series to be pushed back from its premiere amid Hollywood’s historic dual strike.
Originally scheduled to bow Aug. 29, the seven-episode murder-mystery series starring Clive Owen will now arrive at a date to be determined in November.
The decision comes as executives across the film and TV landscape have been mulling whether to release previously completed projects or hold them for later — and when stars can promote them — during the ongoing strikes between the Writers Guild and the performers union, SAG-AFTRA. Both unions are on strike against studios and streamers who comprise the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers over such issues as the use of AI and residuals.

A Murder at the End of the World, the limited series that stars Emma Corrin, Clive Owen, Harris Dickinson and Brit Marling, has had its premiere pushed by FX.
The Disney-owned network has moved the series, which was created by Marling and Zal Batmanglij, from August 29 to November.
The move comes amidst a double strike from writers and actors and is thought to be one of the first, if not the first, high-profile TV series outside of the broadcast fall schedule to push back its premiere date as a result of the labor action.
Actors and writers are unable to do press and promotion during the strikes for struck companies, making it hard to generate buzz for a show, particularly one that is original and not based on existing IP.
The series will now make its Hulu-exclusive debut in November, though an exact date has not been set.

Munis (Shabnam Tolouei) does not want to meet the suitor her brother, Amir Khan (Essa Zahir), has invited over; and, in fact, she does not want to marry at all. Munis’ friend Faezeh (Pegah Ferydoni) does want to get married—to Amir; but he is engaged to another. The prostitute Zarin (Orsolya Toth) appears to have reached the end of her tether when her latest john appears as just a faceless man, prompting her to flee the brothel. And the middle-aged Fakhri (Arita Shahrzad) faces her decaying marriage when her old lover returns to her life.

Winner of the best short film Oscar in 2009 for Toyland, Jochen Alexander Freydank is currently prepping his first feature length project. According to THR, Freydank will adapt the rom-com best-seller Macho Man for Walt Disney Germany.
The film will be based off of Moritz Netenjakob‘s novel of the same name, which tells the story of a sensitive German man who attempts to be macho in order to land a sexy Turkish girl. Friedrich Mücke (Friendship!) will star alongside Pegah Ferydoni (Turkish For Beginners). The Experiment‘s Marc Conrad will produce under his ConradFilm banner with Klaus Dohle of Erfttalfilm.
Freydank isn’t the only recent award-winning short director with the opportunity to make his way into the world of feature lengths. We reported just a few weeks ago that Fox has hired Jesus Orellana to direct the feature length adaptation of his own sci-fi short Rosa, after it went viral back in November.

Greenberg (15)
(Noah Baumbach, 2010, Us) Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh. 107 mins
Usually Ben Stiller is the guy you like in the movie, and the guy you laugh at. Here he's bravely subdued and unsympathetic – a self-absorbed slacker with extreme empathy issues – but you can still laugh at him. After a while, you might even like him. Drifting back to La, he picks at old relationship wounds and opens up fresh ones (with the winningly pathetic Gerwig) in a charming character study with indie values (and soundtrack) that under-achievers of a certain age will relate to.
Brooklyn's Finest (18)
(Antoine Fuqua, 2009, Us) Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke. 132 mins
Breaking news: law enforcement in the sketchier areas of New York is sometimes quite difficult. This three-pronged assault hammers the cliches home relentlessly, self-importantly detailing the trials of its compromised lawmen as if it's saying something new. Or something at all.

Iran in turmoil is the backdrop to this enigmatic and impressive debut. By Peter Bradshaw
The Anglo-Iranian comic Shappi Khorsandi recently revealed that Jon Snow had told her about a conversation he had once had some years ago with the then prime minister, Tony Blair. The premier had asked Snow, plaintively, why Iran hated the British so much. Snow replied hesitantly: "Well, you know, because of Mossadeq …" – that is, the left-leaning Iranian leader, toppled in 1953 by a coup instigated by the British and American governments because of his determination to nationalise oil. Blair replied blankly: "Who?" Perhaps watching this excellent movie would be a way for Blair, and the rest of us, to brush up on British and Iranian history.
With this debut feature, the photographer-turned-director Shirin Neshat has made a picture with vision, poetry, sexual frankness and historical sinew. It brings together, on screen, the personal and the political...

Women Without Men
Starring Arita Shahrzad, Shabnam Tolouei, Pegah Ferydoni, and Orsi Toth
Directed by Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari
Unrated
If you're 30 or younger, you don't know an Iran that has a lot of progressive rights for anyone, perhaps women least of all. The only Iran you identify with is most likely the contemporary one, which is an odd choice of words since there is so little contemporary about 21st century institutional mores in Iran.
We saw a revolution unfold on television in 1979, a deeply fundamentalist uprising that led to the 444-day capture of 52 Americans by Iranian students. But it was only the second massive revolution in that country in 30 years.
The first took place in 1953, when Iran was so much closer to a western culture than it is today. Much of that had to do with the Shah, who was nothing if not conciliatory to the west. But he was also,...

Photographer and installation-artist Shirin Neshat spent six years making her feature-film debut Women Without Men, adapting Shahrnush Parsipur’s novella about four Iranian women in 1953 who witness the country’s transition from a democratically elected patriarchy to a more dictatorial one. Shabnam Tolouei plays a middle-class, middle-aged single woman fascinated by the protests in the streets and the reports of a Western-led coup, while Pegah Ferydoni plays Tolouei’s best friend (who urges Tolouei to obey her conservative brother and be less of an iconoclast), Arita Shahrzad plays the well-off wife of a high-ranking official in the Shah’s ...
