The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

Exclusive: Janelle Monáe and her Wondaland Pictures have partnered with the non-profit SeriesFest on the ninth season of Storytellers, its Script Writing Competition spotlighting female-focused stories within the episodic arena. Photo: SeriesFest Season 8 Denver, Colorado. It’s home to the Broncos and the weirdest damn airport I’ve been in thus far. More than that, though, Denver also has a rich arts culture and also happens to be the first place I rode one of those rentable electric scooter thingies you see laying all over cities now. Part of that arts culture includes the non-profit SeriesFest organization, which also calls the city home. SeriesFest was founded by Randi Kleiner and Kaily Smith Westbrook eight years ago in 2015. For each of those eight years, they have held annual festivals, dubbed “seasons,” which offer creators and independent artists an opportunity to showcase their work. However, rather than be yet another film festival and sit around with our noses up in the air, snobbishly downplaying television’s potential, efficacy, and importance, SeriesFest showcases episodic content. In 2018, everyone knows what happens at a Sundance film premiere. Fervor builds for weeks leading up to the screening. Tickets are a hot commodity. If the movie is well-received, word-of-mouth spreads (or, these days, word-of-Twitter), screenings are added, and the cycle starts over. After all, each film could be the next big sale or even next year’s Oscar favorite — everyone wants to see it.
So when Tonya Glanz stared at a half-empty theater following a screening of her series “The Adulterers” and half-jokingly asked, “Are there any buyers in the house?” the subsequent silence seemed like a deafening answer. Part of Sundance’s first-ever Indie Episodic program, which highlighted TV pilots, premieres, and short-form series, “The Adulterers” was one of the best of the fest, but it didn’t generate the same festival frenzy as its film counterparts.
