Pasadena -- ESPN announced eight additional documentary films for its "30 for 30" film project, including deals with Morgan Freeman, Frank Marshall and Spike Jonze.
The move adds another eight hours to the network's budding documentary slate, in which filmmakers cover a sports subject that took place within the past 30 years. Espn went on the air in 1979.
The network said at the Television Critics Assn.'s press tour that subjects will cover South African rugby, Bmx star Mat Hoffman, ostracized Cubs fan Steve Bartman, disgraced Olympic sprinter Marion Jones, the Los Angeles Raiders, jockey Chris Antley and Charismatic, the late Nascar driver Tim Richmond and Olympic speedskater Johann Olav Koss.
Filmmakers on board include Freeman and Lori McCreary, Ice Cube, Alex Gibney, Frank Marshall, John Singleton, Al Szymanski and the trios of Spike Jonze, Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine and Steve Michaels, Joel Surnow and Jonathan Koch.

Producer Frank Marshall is moving into the directing biz with conceiving and directing the documentary "Right to Play" for Espn Films. Part of the cable network's 30 for 30 series, the film focuses on the Norwegian speed-skating great Johann Olav Koss and his Right to Play organization, which has the aim of bringing sports to those children in sadly war-torn and poverty-stricken areas. A winner of three gold medals at the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, Koss decided that when he retired instead of taking relaxing he would found the nonprofit organization and make his travels around the globe.

Tim Burton is going on exhibit this fall—and where else but NYC’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art? As Variety reports, some 700+ sketches, storyboards, paintings and other works by Burton (spanning his entire life from childhood to veteran fantasy filmmaker) will be on display November 22-April 26. The Museum will also screen all of Burton’s movies as well as selected pictures that have influenced him (like Frankenstein and The Pit And The Pendulum). It promises to be an eerie, strange and revealing dissection of the imaginings of this Starlog favorite. See this link.
Meanwhile, producer Frank Marshall (another Starlog favorite, collect them all!) is currently working on the live-action film version of The Last Airbender. But The Hollywood Reporter reveals he’ll return to directing (having helmed Arachnophobia,...

Producer Frank Marshall is making a rare foray into directing, conceiving and taking on the documentary "Right to Play" for Espn Films.
The picture, which will be part of the cable network's 30 for 30 series, will examine Norwegian speed-skating great Johann Olav Koss and his Right to Play organization, which aims to bring sports to children in poverty-stricken and war-torn areas.
Koss won three gold medals at the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, but after retiring decided that instead of taking it easy he would found the nonprofit organization and travel around the world spreading its gospel. Right to Play, which now has scores of employees and volunteers, works on continents ranging from Africa to Europe to South America organizing sporting events and providing the means for kids to play.
