76-year-old Mavis Staples hasn’t run out of songs to sing or stuff to say. Mavis! depicts the legendary singer’s journey across genres and through decades of performances with clips from past and present. Much of Mavis! is spent in the lively and instantly delightful presence of the titular singer. Whether listening to her booming vocals or watching her warmly point and smile at someone in her audience, Mavis Staples makes for an endearing narrator for her own story. Despite the documentary’s lack of extensive details, Mavis! provides a comprehensive look at the vocalist’s life and career, punctuated by insightful talking head tidbits.
Tracing Mavis’ roots from her childhood years in Chicago through her more recent tours and collaborations with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, Mavis! looks beyond the music to profile The Staple Singers family and their position in a burgeoning civil rights movement.

There are many ways a person can commit suicide, quick and easy or long and slow, but the end result is all the same. One way, for example, would be to deliberately do something to royally piss off the mafia. Yes, that would just about guarantee your own demise. With this in mind, let’s talk about a film, based on a true story…
By its title, Rob The Mob does sound like it should be a comedy about the mafia. In fact, it is actually a very funny film. I’d even say it holds its own against My Cousin Vinny (1992). As appealing as that is on the surface, it gets better. Not only is this a funny, entertaining movie, but it’s also based on a true story. The events in this film, or at least parts of it, actually happened… in real life!

Ranking right up there alongside places like Sun Studios, Graceland and Hitsville, USA, as some of the music world's holiest and most legendary places, is Muscle Shoals. It might not be as well known as those others, but the studio played an important, influential and crucial part in shaping the American soul and rock 'n roll musical landscape, and now the story is getting a much deserved, big screen telling. Directed by Greg Camalier, "Muscle Shoals" zeroes on two key factors that made the studio the hitmaking machine it became: Rick Hall and The Swampers. The former was a producer extraordinaire, while the latter was the studio backing band that equally stood tall next to more famous folks like The Funk Brothers, Booker T. & The M.G.s, The Wrecking Crew, and Mfsb, providing the sound and flavor that powered hits by Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett,...

Justin Timberlake performed at White House's celebration of Memphis soul music on Tuesday, serenading Barack and Michelle Obama with a strong take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and imploring the president to sing along.
The event was a part of the Obama's "In Performance" series. The first couple has made a habit of inviting musicians from different genres to explore the themes and history of their respective crafts. Tuesday's event also featured Otis Redding, Booker T Jones, Queen Latifah and Cyndi Lauper.
A clip of Timberlake's performance is available above. Tuesday's gig is yet another step in Timberlake's hot streak that began when he released "Suit & Tie," the Jay-z-featuring lead single off his comeback album "The 20/20 Experience." Chicago — In a family of vocalists, it was Cleotha Staples' smooth and velvety voice that helped set apart the sound of the influential and best-selling gospel group The Staple Singers.
Staples, the eldest sister and member of the group her father Roebuck "Pops" Staples started in the 1940s, died Thursday at age 78. She was at her Chicago home and had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the past decade, said family friend and music publicist Bill Carpenter.
The group included sisters Pervis, Yvonne, Mavis and Cynthia, but Cleotha was the backbone, defining herself by being the "strong, silent type," said Carpenter, author of "Uncloudy Day: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia."
"When she was young they used to call her granny because she acted like a granny in terms of being wise and always sure of the best thing to do," Carpenter said.

Cleotha Staples, one of the founding members of The Staple Singers, has died. Staples had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for the past 12 years. She was 78. Staples co-founded The Staple Singers with sisters Mavis and Yvonne, brother Pervis, and father Roebuck “Pops” Staples in Chicago in 1952. Over the years the group has sold more than 10 million records and landed classic Stax hits like “Respect Yourself,” “I’ll Take You There,” and “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me).” Cleotha (“Cleedi” to her family) sang the high parts in the group’s songs, and also ...

Film director known for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Wattstax
Mel Stuart, who has died aged 83, became widely known for directing two radically dissimilar films, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Wattstax. The former, which Stuart called "the most rewarding experience of my career", was a garish and joyfully warped musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Received without enthusiasm on its release in 1971, the movie became over the next few decades a children's favourite, though its psychedelic overtones extended its appeal beyond that core audience. "Although I have been a film-maker for over 40 years," Stuart wrote in 2001, "Willy Wonka is the one work that has reached out to and been embraced by a wide audience."
Wattstax, released two years later, also acquired a cult following, one which might have increased had music rights issues not made the film hard to see until the late 1990s.

Meet 'Alcatraz' star Sarah Jones: Her weird talent, Cookie Monster fangirling, and other confessions
If, like us, you're totally captivated by "Alcatraz" every Monday night, you've probably already fallen head-over-heels for the show's tough as nails leading lady, Sarah Jones. On the series, her character Det. Rebecca Madsen is part of a highly classified task force that apprehends the world's deadliest criminals... who have recently been transported to 2012 circa 1963.
We thought we'd take an opportunity to get to know who Jones is off-screen -- though she admits that she basically spends all of her time working on the series' Vancouver set. We gave Jones the Zap2it Celeb Slam Book treatment and asked her to drop some knowledge on a few random questions.
Check out her answers below! We particularly love hearing which celeb got her so starstruck she was rendered nearly speechless -- and, given her stoic attitude on the show, it's nice to know what can bring tears to her eyes.

Mark Landsman’s Thunder Soul hits theaters this Friday, so in lieu of a traditional interview we asked him, what five documentary films influenced him as a filmmaker during the creation of Thunder Soul.
I find it challenging whenever anyone asks me to list a ‘top five’ of anything--especially movies--because I love a lot of them for a lot of different reasons--it’s tough to do a process of elimination. But in thinking about it, in terms of the top five docs that have made the greatest impact on me as a filmmaker and most influenced my current project, Thunder Soul, I think it’d be these. I offer them up knowing that there are many more that live in the brain drive and influence me even when I not realizing it.

Listeners to Mavis Staples’ You Are Not Alone, the latest album from the Chicago gospel legend who achieved crossover success in the early ’70s with The Staple Singers, might at first think they’d slipped an old record into the stereo by mistake. You Are Not Alone opens with “Don’t Knock,” a track written by Staples’ late father, Pops. It’s interpreted by Staples, some fine gospel-harmony backing vocals, and a touring band that includes the fine blues guitarist Rick Holmstrom—whom Staples has taken to calling “Pops Jr.”—as if trying to erase the years between 2010 and ...

She’ll take you there Though now on the far side of 70, Mavis Staples remains one of American music’s national treasures, with a smoldering voice that’s as compelling today as it was 40 years ago on Staple Singers’ hits like “Respect Yourself.” Likely the only singer whose resume includes collaborations with Curtis Mayfield, Bob Dylan and Prince, she affirmed her vitality on 2007’s We’ll Never Turn Back, produced by Ry Cooder. This time around, Jeff Tweedy is the lucky guy at the helm, and he’s done Staples justice, giving the album throwback flourishes and a modern aesthetic....

Ah, the 80's -- what a bizarre decade that was. I admit to having a special fondness for that time, but even nostalgia isn't blinding enough to ignore some of the decade's more dubious moments and trends. Bo Jackson proved he knew both baseball and football, but he was hardly the first guy who wanted to be a "double threat." Actors Eddie Murphy and Bruce Willis traversed this ground earlier, when both tried to make the jump from acting to music. In Murphy's case, this was a disaster, but Willis was at least sort of tolerable.
In 1987, while Moonlighting was still big and before Die Hard hit, Willis released The Return of Bruno on Motown. An "eclectic gathering of R&B music sung by Willis." The album was filled with covers (only one song was an original) that highlighted Willis' "white boy soul" stylings. Things looked good for Bruno, when...

- My earliest memory of Dave Chappelle is from his annoying portrayal of Tom Hanks’ best friend in You’ve Got Mail. I found him kinda really super annoying. But, like several of my hairy infected back moles, he started to grow on me. I’ve seen his show only a handful of times, and while it is funny for the most part, I still feel it suffers from what all other variety shows of its kind suffer from (like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and Antiques Roadshow), it’s inconsistently funny. You either laugh ‘til it hurts or keep flipping over to see that hot chick on the Weather Channel. So that’s why, be it George Carlin or Chappelle, stick to their stand-up routines. And judging from the trailer to Block Party, he should deliver in spades. Inspired by Wattstax, the 1973 documentary about African-American funk and soul singers such
