Boxing has always transferred well to the screen because it is an individual sport with individual stories. Boxers may have family, friends, managers, and a training corner, but aside from ringside yells of "cover-up!" and "go to the body!" these fighters are on their own. This isn't tennis or golf, and the stakes are higher than returning your opponent's serve or knocking a small white ball into a hole. This is boxing, a game of rules-based violence that sanitizes aggression into a test of speed, power, tactics, and strategy.
It is not just the ring that's fertile dramatic ground, either. Much of the intensity comes from these fighters' lives, which are often marked by crime, poverty, and hardship. It is no wonder that cinema has seen so many boxing films in its 120+ year history, producing a great deal of wheat but also a fair amount of chaff. To help you navigate this broad oeuvre,...

The act of making an observational documentary is built on hope. Or at least, on the slightly reckless faith that once the cameras are rolling, patterns and arcs will duly emerge, coalescing into insightful, manageable storylines that can with luck be shaped to deliver an uptick of optimism. Joshua Altman and Bing Liu’s “All These Sons” certainly starts off in that vein, introducing us to its cast of characters — all men from Chicago’s South and West sides, involved in one of two programs addressing the scourge of gun and gang violence in the city — with the familiar energy of the urban social issues doc, promising illumination, hard-won wisdom, maybe even inspiration. Then the ambivalence of real life starts to tarnish that shiny promise, and “All These Sons” becomes a far more interesting, far less simple film.

A pair of Sundance films that got exclusive single-screen releases, Oscilloscope’s “Madeline’s Madeline” and Magnolia Pictures “Skate Kitchen,” highlighted this weekend’s indie box office.

Three years in the making, Joe Cole starrer A Prayer Before Dawn will start its theatrical release this weekend. The A24 title, which debuted at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, is based on a non-fiction book written by Billy Moore, played by Cole in the feature, which opens in select cities Friday. The Wolfpack filmmaker Crystal Moselle returns with her narrative feature debut, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at Sundance where Magnolia Pictures caught the film in January. The film follows a group of young women who she met on the subway in a story that has some parallel to their real lives. And Oscilloscope is opening Madeline’s Madeline with newcomer Helena Howard along with Molly Parker and Miranda July. Also a Sundance debut, the company said it has been championed by critics, which it hopes will overcome skepticism by some exhibitors. The company said its trailer, however, has reached ‘cult’ status.

There’s a scene in A Prayer Before Dawn, the film adaptation of Billy Moore’s prison memoir, in which the convict hits rock bottom. An Englishman incarcerated in a rough Thai jailhouse dubbed the “Bangkok Hilton,” he’s strung out on drugs and has nearly killed a man. Before Moore was a prisoner, however, he was a bare-knuckle brawler. So, in the hopes of finding a reason to stay alive, he visits the facility’s gym and pleads his case to the Muay Thai team’s skeptical trainer. “I want to box,...

There are boxing movies, there are jailbird dramas and there are hell-and-back memoir adaptations — A Prayer Before Dawn throws all three of these genres into a dingy cell together, forcing them to either make nice or beat each other senseless in a survival-of-the-fittest showdown. Thankfully, filmmaker Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Bosch-like take on Billy Moore’s autobiography of life in a Thai prison allows each of these distinct narrative types to eventually bleed all over each other, sometimes literally. Moore (Joe Cole) was a Liverpudlian ex-pat living in Bangkok, fighting amateur Muay Thai bouts.

Jean- Stephane Sauvaire’s A Prayer Before Dawn is a vortex of nihilistic self-sabotage, orchestrated in a prism of oppressive human behaviour. It is fundamentally flawless in its production. Cinematographer David Ungaro utilises a form of a documentarian approach that subjects the audience to an unflinching atmospheric and quite frankly, a torturous horror of psychological and physical deterioration. The story of Billy Moore is primal. It is desolate. It is utterly compelling to even fortify and comprehend a belief that this is non-fiction let alone a true story that Moore survived to tell the tale.

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting talents working in the British film industry today, it was our pleasure of sit down with Joe Cole to celebrate the release of his latest film – the unforgiving prison drama A Prayer Before Dawn – which tells the true story of Billy Moore.
Moore was incarcerated in a notorious Thai prison, knowing his only route out of this hellhole was to box. Cole talks to us about his experiences meeting the real man he’s portraying on screen, and just how rigorous a training regime he had to go on in order to get fully fit for what was a uniquely demanding role to take on.
He also speaks about his time spent shooting, and how often he got genuinely smacked in the face, and how he, much like the viewer, was completely unaware of what all of the other actors were saying about him,...

As he did in his child soldier drama “Johnny Mad Dog,” the French director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire fills out his cast with first-time actors in “A Prayer Before Dawn,” which debuted at Cannes earlier this year. Based on a true story and shot on location in a Thai prison with real inmates, Joe Cole (“Peaky Blinders”) leads this boxing drama with a raw brute strength. The eye can hardly latch onto any image in the newly released first trailer, which promises a visceral and savage drama.
Per the official synopsis: “‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ is the remarkable true story of Billy Moore, a young English boxer incarcerated in two of Thailand’s most notorious prisons. He is quickly thrown into a terrifying world of drugs and gang violence, but when the prison authorities allow him to take part in the Muay Thai boxing tournaments, he realizes this might be his chance to get out.

Joe Cole plays a British boxer fighting for survival among the inmates of a Bangkok hellhole in this grisly, visceral and often unwatchably brutal biopic
Traditionally, boxing is the way out of the ghetto, or the way into a central core of toxic masculinity – and then redemptively out of it. In this movie, it is the route to a safer, fractionally more prestigious, marginally less violent part of a Thai jail: the Klong Prem central prison in Bangkok. This is the true story of Billy Moore, a guy from Liverpool who got involved in drugs and burglary, tried to restart his life in Thailand as a boxer and stuntman, but was arrested there in 2005 for gun offences and sentenced to three years in this authentically terrifying place. He earned respect for mastering Muay Thai boxing, and was finally released in a royal amnesty in 2010 to serve the rest of his term in the UK.

Joe Cole stars as Billy Moore, the one white man in this Thai world, who has nothing but boxing. Real-life boxer Billy Moore’s truly harrowing journey through Thailand’s prison system has been adapted into a sporting drama that is a hypnotically brutal descent into hell.
Hell on Earth. Few can argue that such a place doesn’t exist, and there’s probably more than just one. Just look at the news, war zones, natural disasters and prisons. And only the very unlucky or wicked find themselves locked up in Thailand. The country’s prisons are world renowned for their beyond squalid conditions and overcrowding. Well, one very troubled young boxer Billy Moore (Joe Cole) finds himself prize fighting in Bangkok to feed his out of control drug habit fuelled by his raging personal demons. He falls foul of the law. The Liverpudlian is sentenced to three years in prison. A foreigner, alone, who doesn’t speak the language. For him Hell on Earth is a very real place indeed.

At first blush, A Prayer Before Dawn appears to be yet another tale of brutal, horrible Asia, seen through the eyes of an enlightened white man. It's based on a true story, and the official synopsis leans heavily on stereotypes, selling it as: "The remarkable true story of Billy Moore, a young English boxer incarcerated in two of Thailand's most notorious prisons. He is quickly thrown into a terrifying world of drugs and gang violence, but when the prison authorities allow him to take part in the Muay Thai boxing tournaments, he realizes this might be his chance to get out." Yes, yes, true story, innocent white man trapped with savages, we get it. Yet, here's the thing: it might actually be good. Ben Croll,...

"I've got not family, no money, just give me this one chance." A24 has debuted an intense, badass official trailer for a film titled A Prayer Before Dawn, shot by a French filmmaker in a real Thai prison starring real inmates. This film is about a young English boxer who is thrown into prisons in Thailand, where he fights back and trains to be a competitor in a vicious Muay Thai boxing tournament. Joe Cole stars as Billy Moore, the one white man in this Thai world, apparently based on a true story. The cast includes Vithaya Pansringarm, Panya Yimmumphai, Nicolas Shake, Pornchanok Mabklang, plus the real Billy Moore in a cameo role. This looks frickin' awesome! I can't believe I have missed this film until now. And A24's trailer is exciting, building up the intensity right until the last second. I actually can't wait to see this. Here's...

The first trailer for Thailand prison drama A Prayer Before Dawn has been released, a warm-up to the film’s planned 2018 release. In a splashy Berlin sale this year, A24 closed a deal for North American rights to the pic, a Jean-Stephane Sauvaire-directed action film that provides a breakout opportunity for Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole. The film is the story of Billy Moore (Cole), a young English boxer incarcerated in two of Thailand’s most notorious prisons, a world of…...

One giant bulging vein of a movie, “A Prayer Before Dawn” is only nominally about boxing. It’s also only nominally about its main character, and he’s in nearly every shot. Based on the eponymous 2014 memoir by drug addict-turned-convict-turned-champion boxer Billy Moore, the film is less interested in the how’s and why’s of the real figure’s story than it is in orchestrating one of the most unrelentingly intense symphonies of testosterone and rage ever put onscreen.
Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s film is not so much the story of a fighter as it is a story that wants to fight you.

Based on the true life account by Billy Moore, Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s bloody, brutal film follows a British drug addict as he fights for survival
Reality-check for anyone who thought that life inside a Thai prison was a nice bed of roses, some kind of holiday camp. A Prayer Before Dawn is here to tell you that it ain’t, you slags, it’s actually a right bloody nightmare. There are fights in the yard and sexual assaults in the toilet. You have to sleep on the floor, packed in like sardines, and if the man beside you isn’t stone-cold dead already, you can lay pretty good odds he’ll have hung himself by the morning. And on top of all that, the food’s lousy too.

When French director Jean-Stephane Sauvaire met Joe Cole, he knew he'd found the right man to star in his drama A Prayer Before Dawn, based on the true story of Billy Moore, who spent two years in a Thai prison, where he became a Muay Thai boxing champion in order to survive.
"He had the violence I needed for playing this guy, but he also has the kind of sensibility which was important for this character," says Sauvaire of British actor Cole, who has managed to stand out in impressive ensembles like the BBC period drama Peaky Blinders and Jeremy...
