- He his friends of some of the major film directors, with whom his company worked over the years, namely Akira Kurosawa for Ran (1980), Francis Ford Coppola for The Cotton Club (1984), Robert Zemeckis for Forrest Gump (1994), Steven Spielberg, Martin Campbell for The Mask of Zorro (1998), George Lucas, James Cameron for Titanic (2000), Luc Besson for The Fifth Element (2002), and Quentin Tarantino for Jackie Brown (2004).
- Brought up in Mozambique until he was 8 years old, then moved to Portugal with his family and when he was 18, he settled in Northridge, California, to attend Economy at the State University, where he graduated in Accounting. When he was 19, with his friend Edward Philips, he formed Matthews Studio Equipment, Inc., a little, highly specialized company in equipment for the movie industry that became successful due to standardization, and innovation.
