While the entire world was fighting a pandemic back in 2020, Gerard Butler came out with an apocalyptic thriller, Greenland, directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Even though the movie did not do too well at the box office, it received generally positive reviews from both fans and critics thanks to the exhilarating and emotional journey of the Garrity family.

After Greenland’s release, the possible sequel found itself in a bit of a conundrum thanks to one of its co-producers. However, fans of the film do not have to worry anymore as the sequel is finally going into production with Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin returning to continue the story of the Garrity family.

Gerard Butler’s long-awaited “Greenland” sequel is finally set to go into production in April, Variety can confirm.
The disaster film, titled “Greenland: Migration,” will see Butler reunite with director Ric Roman Waugh and “Greenland” writer Chris Sparling. “Deadpool” star Morena Baccarin will also return for the sequel.
Sparling has co-written “Greenland: Migration” alongside Mitchell Lafortune.
In “Greenland,” Butler starred as John Garrity, a structural engineer who attempts to flee Atlanta along with his wife Allison (played by Baccarin) and diabetic son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) after a comet threatens to destroy the planet. After John, Allison and Nathan are separated, the family struggles to reunite while fragments of the comet rain down on earth, threatening an extinction-level event.
In the sequel, which is set after the comet has decimated earth, the Garrity family are forced to embark on a perilous journey across what’s left of Europe to find a new home.

Exclusive: Gerard Butler’s latest action thriller Greenland will not be playing at U.S. movie theaters as the pic’s studio ErosSTX pivots the feature for a Premium Video On-Demand release sometime in the fourth quarter.
STX will control the PVOD window on the Ric Roman Waugh-directed movie. Additionally, we can tell you first, that HBO has shelled out a whopping $20M-$30M for Greenland‘s pay TV and streaming in the U.S. where the movie will debut on the pay-cable TV network and stream on HBO Max in early 2021.
That’s a huge deal, bigger than HBO’s global $17.5M acquisition out of TIFF last year for the Hugh Jackman-Allison Janney drama Bad Education, which recently went on to win Outstanding Television Movie at the Primetime Emmys. It speaks to the intense competition in the market right now among the digital players.

It looks like another one-time theatrical release is going to skip theaters altogether after moving out of its initial release date. Buried deep inside a long list of new releases coming out via Amazon Prime Video in October is Greenland, the Gerard Butler vehicle in which the star must try to save his family from a comet hurtling toward the Earth.
Originally slated to come out in theaters last Friday (September 25), Greenland was yanked from the schedule literally as the movie’s press junket was underway with a new release date to be determined. Well, now we have it: Greenland will be available to buy on Prime starting October 13 and available to rent beginning on October 27. It doesn’t look like the film’s massive comet will streak across theater screens after all.

Updated: STX is moving the U.S. release of Greenland to 4Q to a date to be pre-determined. This is more bad news for exhibition looking for new product, as the Gerard Butler movie leaves behind its Sept. 25 release. Universal moved MGM’s Candyman to 2021 Tbd off its Oct. 16 date following Warner’s big move to push Wonder Woman 1984 from Oct. 2 to Christmas Day last Friday. Tenet will truly be the one big event film to watch, or rewatch, until Black Widow opens on Nov. 6. I saw a trailer for Greenland when I went to watch Tenet in San Diego over Labor Day weekend. Greenland has opened No. 1 in 13 markets abroad has grossed $12.5 million to date.
This leaves no new wide entries until Oct. 9 with Open Road’s Honest Thief and 101 Studios’ War With Grandpa, and Oct. 16 with Freestyle’s 2 Hearts.

Greenland, a cinematic disaster epic scheduled for August, has released a trailer showcasing extinction-level devastation for humanity, whose survival—in a manner akin to many recent disaster epics—rests on the shoulders of Gerard Butler.
In the case of Greenland, Butler headlines as a man who, joined by his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin) and young son (Roger Dale Floyd), embarks on a dangerous journey to prospective safety after the planet becomes bombarded by a planet-killing comet and its scattered fragments. However, expect the apocalyptic backdrop of the film to simultaneously highlight the bravery of humanity while indicting its more unstable elements. The film’s cast also consists of Scott Glenn, David Denman, Claire Bronson, Gary Weeks and Andrew Bachelor.
With that set, check out the Greenland trailer just below.
As the official logline for Greenland fully explains of the film’s plot:

With his dear immediate family in tow, Gerard Butler, who has never met an apocalyptic calamity that he can't defeat, instead abandons his home in Florida and seeks shelter in a faraway land. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, stuntman turned stunt coordinator turned director reunites with Butler, who has protected U.S. presidents (Olympus Has Fallen) and vanquished climate change (Geostorm), in the story of an ordinary man placed into an extraordinary situation. Or, to be official: "A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. Gerard Butler has done it all at this point. He’s saved Aaron Eckhart’s President of the United States on more than one occasion thanks to Olympus Has Fallen and its sequel, London Has Fallen, battled Persians in 300 and even faced off against a storm straight out of the Old Testament in Geostorm. And for his next effort, the actor will once more find himself in familiar territory, as he’s set to feature in a disaster thriller titled Greenland.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, it sees a family fighting for survival as a planet-killing comet heads towards Earth. Also starring Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, Hope Davis, Andrew Bachelor and Joshua Mikel, it’s hardly the most original premise for a movie, but you can get a new look at it thanks to the trailer up above, which sees Butler doing what he does...
