Between November and February of every Oscar season, rarely a day goes by that some sort of precursor award isn’t announced. It can all be pretty maddening, especially for those of us tasked with trying to predict the Academy Awards.
This is the time of year when you pretty much only have to throw a rock in order to hit a critics group announcing their year-end awards. Some years the critics all rally around one film, while other years have the love spread around much more. The thing is, though: Does it actually matter at all in terms of the Oscar race?
To be honest, not all critics groups are created equally. There’s some value to smaller groups like the Boston Society of Film Critics, but the ones that have any true sway are the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle.

Having covered the awards season in quite a bit of detail last year, it's fair to say that it wasn't the most exciting Oscar race in history. It became clear from early September onward that "The Artist" was set to be a juggernaut, and as the film swept the precursors in the run-up, it was clear that nothing else had a chance at beating it out. And indeed, most of the acting races felt like foregone conclusions as well. It became apparent in the weeks before the Oscars that Jean Dujardin was going to edge out George Clooney, while Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer had their awards locked up for months, making the Meryl Streep/Viola Davis head-to-head the only major race that felt up in the air. And the same has mostly been true of the last few years. 2011's awards was a two-header between "The King's Speech" and "The Social Network,...

Some random thoughts on this evening's Academy Awards ceremony: not about the films themselves, but the ceremony.
It's good to have Billy Crystal back, even though the "work" done on his face made him a bit unrecognizable. If he wasn't quite as sharp this year, his presence was a vast improvement over most hosts in the Crystal-less era. He had the usual amusing opening sequences in which he engaged in elaborate, expensive spoofs of films and nominated actors and topped it off with another clever song that took aim at both. Crystal actually got a bit better as the evening wore on and had some very amusing barbs. The show's pace was quite good. Things never got boring and they actually managed to end on time. Acceptance speeches were short, gracious and classy with the exception of...

Rooney Mara is at her fiercest best in the latest photos to come from Columbia Pictures and their highly anticipated Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Along with the Mara photo, Columbia released a photo of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Daniel Craig walking inquisitively across a snow covered field.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo arrives in theaters December 21 and if the trailer is any indication, director David Fincher was the perfect choice to direct, and Nine Inch Nails leader and Oscar winner for The Social Network Trent Reznor was an impeccable choice to do the score.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also stars Christopher Plummer, Joely Richardson, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Steven Berkoff and Yorick van Wageningen.

You can't imagine how big a David Fincher fan I am. I would go as far as saying that he's one of the best filmmakers working today. His previous three films are all personal favorites of mine: Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (yes, I'm one of the five people on Earth who love that movie). So when I heard Fincher was going to remake the hugely popular foreign movie franchise based on the even more popular Millenium Trilogy, I was a little skeptical. Those films already have a huge following, and would a Fincher directed remake add anything new to the table? Well now, Sony has released the first official teaser trailer for the film. And you know what?
I still don't see it.
It's Just A Bunch Of Cuts. Don't get me wrong, I don't need a trailer to tell me every single part of a film's plot,...

So the red-band trailer for the hotly-anticipated adaptation of Swedish author Stieg Larsson Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has only been released abroad, to the chagrin of fans of Larsson and director David Fincher (The Social Network). Not to mention Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer.
The story is about a journalist (Craig), aided by a young female hacker (Mara), investigating the disappearance of a woman forty years ago.
But some intrepid bootlegger or low-level studio n00b has leaked the trailer to the Webz, garnering over 400,000 views on YouTube already. It features a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" by Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with Trent Reznor, who scored The Social Network. Okay, props.

At last night's Times Talk event moderated by The New York Times ' Jon Pareles, former Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor confirmed that he and his musical collaborator Atticus Ross will reteam with director David Fincher for his upcoming adaptation of Stieg Larsson's bestselling thriller The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo due out on December 21. The English version of the film stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer and Stelland Skarsgard. Reznor and Ross scored Fincher's acclaimed The Social Network , which is thought to be a frontrunner in a number of categories at the Academy Awards this year, including a possible nomination for Reznor and Ross' original score.

David Fincher has got to be feeling pretty good about himself right now. His latest picture, The Social Network, just came out of a decent weekend at the box office and has garnered rave reviews across the board. $20 million dollars for a movie about Facebook isn’t bad, but when you consider it’s easily one of the year’s best reviewed movies (along with How To Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3), it’s one hell of a success.

Swedish hit, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo took audiences by storm when it hit UK shores earlier this year. Starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist (soon to appear in Mission: Impossible IV) the film is the first installment in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. Naturally being such a success, Hollywood couldn’t go without a slice of the pie, and so the imminent remake is in full swing, with casting announcements happening seemingly on a weekly basis.
The latest to join the (admittedly) already solid cast is veteran actor Christopher Plummer. Plummer’s role in the film, according to the Heat Vision Blog, is that of a wealthy industrialist who hires a journalist to solve a 40 year old murder.
Already tied to the English language production are Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård and Daniel Craig. Directing the feature will be none other than “The Social Network” helmer, David Fincher.

Christopher Plummer has joined the cast of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The mighty acting veteran (oh, Captain my Captain von Trapp!) will play Henrik Vanger, the ailing tycoon who hires Daniel Craig’s Mikael Blomkvist to solve the mystery of his niece’s disappearance.
Plummer seems like ideal casting to me. He’s got just the imposing presence to portray the patriarch of a family with dark secrets — and the silver beard will fit right into the icy Swedish landscape. Much as the words “American remake” usually make me want to run for the hills (that are alive!

Like many of you, I'm a bit surprised that Andrew Garfield is the new Spider-Man. After weeks of hearing names like Josh Hutcherson, Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin and more tossed around with great frequency, Garfield's status as director Marc Webb's webslinger is definitely a surprise.
But it's a great surprise. I can only speak for myself, of course, but based on what I know about the actor, I'm very excited to see him as the new Spider-Man. After the jump, I'll tell you why.
Garfield is hilarious, as you're no doubt aware if you've seen him in "The Imaginarum of Doctor Parnassus." His scenes as a veritable circus leader stringing unamused crowds along are as awkward as they are hysterical, but it's his scenes opposite Heath Ledger that really prove that Garfield has what it takes to play Parker.

1. "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" ($25 million)
2. "9" ($11 million)
3. "Inglourious Basterds" ($6.6 million)
4. "All About Steve" ($6 million)
5. "The Final Destination" ($5.7 million)
Despite the plethora of R-rated or similarly violent films at the box office this weekend, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" proved the most cunning when it comes to earning theatergoers' hard-earned cash. "I Can Do Bad" took in $25 million over the course of the weekend, capitalizing on the $5 million lead it boasted over the competition going into Saturday morning. Still, Perry's "Bad" was only his third best opening ever, falling short to his earlier 2009 effort "Madea Goes To Jail," which made $41 million in its first weekend.
Shane Acker's "9" was the second highest performer with $11 million for the weekend. The post-apocalyptic computer animated adventure, featuring voice work from the likes of Elijah Wood and Christopher Plummer, opened this past Wednesday on September 9, 2009 -- a nice...
