Update, with new opening date: Producers of Gerard Alessandrini’s Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song have moved up the preview and opening dates by two weeks, with previews now beginning on July 15 ahead of an official opening on August 5 at the Hayes Theatre. The limited engagement runs through November 1.
Alessandrini’s longtime Off Broadway satirical revue Forbidden Broadway will make its long-in-coming Broadway debut with the full title of the new iteration called Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song
The cast and the rest of the creative team will be announced later. In addition to a five-person cast including the onstage pianist, weekly guest stars will appear throughout the engagement.

Casey Nicholaw has become synonymous with the modern Broadway showstopper thanks to his signature high energy dance numbers. So it may come as a surprise to many theater fans that until this year, he had never won a Tony Award for Choreography. But that has all changed with his win for “Some Like it Hot.”
Nicholaw has one previous Tony win under his belt, but it’s for his directorial efforts for “The Book of Mormon.” Including his dual nominations this year for “Some Like it Hot,” he has amassed 13 total nominations. He received additional directing nominations for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Something Rotten!,” “Mean Girls,” and “The Prom.” He earned choreography nominations for “Spamalot,” “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Aladdin,” “Something Rotten!” and “Mean Girls.”

No matter where fate propels Oliver Twist—from the workhouse to the funeral home to the hideout of a master pickpocket—the orphan maintains a fierce sense of who he is, plus a willingness to stand up for himself and, yes, even ask for more in his pursuit of a loving home. And Benjamin Pajak, the actor who plays him, is on a similarly dogged quest: a nearly one-kid glorious mission to rescue the New York City Center’s lumpy revival of Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver Twist.
If it felt like hyperbole to praise the 10-year-old playing Winthrop Paroo in the revival of The Music Man as the most electrifying performer on stage, there’s no need to pull punches now that he’s taken on a title role. Indeed, Pajak, now 12 years old, is a marvel in Oliver! For one, his...

Maude Apatow will make her New York stage debut as Audrey in the Off-Broadway revival of “Little Shop of Horrors.” She will appear in the musical from Feb. 7 through April 2, 2023. Apatow joins a cast stacked with theater vets that includes Tony Award winner Matt Doyle (“Company”) as Seymour, Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham (“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder“) as Dr. Orin Scrivello, D.D.S., and Tony Award nominee Brad Oscar (“Something Rotten!”) as Mushnik. D’Kaylah Unique Whitley (“Dear Evan Hansen”) also joins the cast this month as Ronnette.
Apatow currently appears on HBO’s “Euphoria.” Her film and television credits include Netflix’s “Hollywood,” “Other People,” “Assassination Nation” and “The King of Staten Island.”
“I have long admired the emotional intelligence and vulnerability Maude has displayed on television and in film. She’s a natural fit for Audrey,” says the production’s Tony-winning director Michael Mayer.

It is not an unusual occurrence to see audiences rise up to their feet in appreciative applause at the end of a Broadway show. But something rarer is occurring nightly at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, where the new musical “Paradise Square” just debuted. Audiences are leaping to their feet for star Joaquina Kalukango for her powerful eleven o’clock number, well before the company gathers for the final curtain call. This type of response is a surefire sign that an actor is about to go far in the Tony Awards race.
The song in question is titled “Let it Burn.” To describe it fully would spoil the outcome of this epic musical, but the number serves as an emotional breaking point for Kalukango’s Nelly O’Brien. Throughout the story, Nelly witnesses her harmonious neighborhood fracture along race lines, she suffers tremendous loss, and must make impossible choices when it...

Almost thirty years after Robin Williams played “Mrs. Doubtfire” on the big screen, a musical adaptation has bowed on Broadway. The farcical plot follows divorced father Daniel, who dresses as a female housekeeper in order to spend time with his children. The film is best remembered for Williams’ singular performance and won the Oscar for Best Makeup. The material has been modernized, however slightly, for the stage and stars Tony-nominee Rob McClure in Williams’ role. “Mrs. Doubtfire” opened at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Dec. 5.
The new musical features a score by Tony-nominated songwriters Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick of “Something Rotten!,” a book by Karey and Tony-nominee John O’Farrell, and direction by the prolific Jerry Zaks, who has four Tony Awards for his direction of plays and musicals.

Broadway performances all over the New York theater district are starting back up again after a year and a half of Covid-19 pandemic closures. There are currently six musical productions set to open this fall. Could we see any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Let’s take a look at the plot of each musical as well as some of the awards history of their creators, actors, and creative teams, plus the opening and closing dates (where applicable).
SEETony Awards history: Black winners from pioneer Juanita Hall to record-breaker Audra McDonald
“Six” (previews begin September 17; opens October 3)
This original musical by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss tells the stories of the six wives of King Henry VIII presented as a pop concert. Each ex-wife gets to sing and tell her story to determine who suffered the most from marrying Henry and should therefore become the group’s lead singer.

"Not too bad, if I say so myself..." If I may take a quote from this year's Best Musical winner as I went 20/24 with my predictions for this year's 2015 Tony Awards. Undoubtedly, the two big winners of the night were the musical Fun Home and the play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, both of which took home five awards including honors for their leading men, directors, and, of course, Best Musical/Play. Right behind those two was the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, which picked up four awards, including Best Revival and for their long overdue leading lady Kelli O'Hara, who easily gave the best speech of the night (including dancing off the stage). I may predicted Tony co-host Kristin Chenoweth over her, but I am so happy to be wrong. yt id="MneMh2c-y0M" width="640" And what about Chenoweth...

Here is something a bit different for Rope of Silicon. Sure, we have award predictions for the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, but that makes sense, considering this is site is 95% about movies. But there are plenty of other stories out there being told in theaters that get plenty of respect. Except these are stories performed live right in front of your face. So, I took it upon myself to comb through the absurd amount of categories of the Tony Awards, which is this Sunday June 7, to give you my predictions on what will win. Dane Cook will make his stage debut in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of Mel Brooks' "The Producers," playing the role of Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind who, in the play, pens the decidedly un-pc musical "Springtime for Hitler." He will play the character for only three performances, from July 27-29.
Cook will be joined by Richard Kind as Max Bialystock, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Leo Bloom, Roger Bart as Carmen Ghia, Gary Beach as Roger De Bris and Rebecca Romjin as Ulla. Bart and Beach were seen in the original Broadway production of the show, which proved to be one of the biggest smashes in Broadway history.
This won't be the first time a well-known comedian stepped into the role of Liebkind. In the 2005 movie adaptation of the Broadway show (which itself was adapted from a 1968 movie), Will Ferrell took over the role from originator Brad Oscar.
