Bas Devos’ Ghost Tropic is premiering in Directors Fortnight, while Tian Zhuangzhuang’s The Horse Thief is in Cannes Classics.
Beijing-based sales agent Rediance has picked up international rights to Tian Zhuangzuang’s classic drama The Horse Thief, which is screening in Cannes Classics, and Bas Devos’ Ghost Tropic, selected for Directors’ Fortnight.
Tian’s 1986 classic is being presented by Xi’an Film Studio and China Film Archive, with the latter organisation financing and over-seeing a 4K digital restoration. The Tibetan-language film tells the story of a tribesman who is sent into exile after he steals a horse to support his family.

Beijing-based sales outfit Rediance has picked up international rights to documentary Kabul, City In The Wind, directed by Afghan filmmaker Aboozar Amini.
The film, which marks Rediance’s first documentary acquisition, will receive its world premiere as the opening film of this year’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Produced by Jia Zhao, a Chinese, Netherlands-based producer, the film follows a bus driver and two brothers through the war-torn streets of Kabul.

Beijing-based sales agency Rediance has launched a film financing arm and has set Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen’s Wet Season as its first investment.
The film is Chen’s long-awaited follow-up to his award-winning debut feature, Ilo Ilo, which won the Camera d’Or after playing in Directors’ Fortnight in 2013.
Rediance is investing alongside Giraffe Pictures and China’s New Influence Century Films, while the project is also supported by the Singapore Film Commission. France’s Memento Films, which sold Ilo Ilo, is handling international sales.
