For their 4th annual edition, the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival is pulling out all the stops, spotlighting great local and international filmmaking talent over the course of three days, Dec. 2-4, on two screens at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (McAd).
The fest opens with an ambitious Minneapolis-based move: Tyler Jensen’s 30 Films 30 Days. Working with hundreds of local participants, Jensen and his team completed a short film a day over the course of one month and this feature compiles all of them into one package. Plus, also screening on the same night is the groovy grindhouse horror flick The Disco Exorcist by Richard Griffin.
Over the course of the next two full days and nights, two of the best highlights of this year’s Muff include Usama Alshaibi‘s masterful mix of sex and religion Profane, Stuart Simpson‘s retro-sleazetastic monster flick El Monstro Del Mar!, neither of which are to be missed!

Included in the lineup are Usama Alshaibi‘s mind-blowing Muslim sex worker flick Profane, Zach Clark‘s wild weekend of debauchery Vacation! and Dan Nelson & Drew Bolduc‘s over-the-top The Taint.

Back in August of last year, I posted a nasty little trailer for Mathieu Peteul & César Ducasse’s genre flick “Dark Souls”, a film that looked extremely promising and downright nasty. I really dig Norwegian horror films — you can blame “Cold Prey” all you want for this — and this particular endeavor appears to be just as eerie, atmospheric, and shamelessly gory as its contemporaries. Mr. Ducasse was kind enough to send over the latest trailer for their production, a clip that you can find embedded just below the synopsis. Speaking of which, here’s the synopsis: When Morten Ravn’s (Morten Ruda) daughter, Johanna (Johanna Gustavsson), is savagely attacked and seemingly murdered, he is shocked when she appears on his doorstep soon after receiving word of her death. Keeping her safe in their small apartment, she begins to display zombie-like symptoms and vomits a black tar-like bile. Soon, there are...

For the fifth year in a row, October gets a little creepier and scarier when the Spooky Movie Film Festival rolls into the Washington, D.C. area on Oct. 21-25 for six terrifying nights of of feature films and shorts.
Every year, Spooky Movie redefines the very definition of “horror” by presenting an absolutely unique selection films from all over the world. This year the bloody offerings range from backwoods horror comedies to documentaries to Norwegian and British zombie flicks to Australian monster movies and more.
Most exciting, however, is the return of the father of the splatter movie himself: Herschell Gordon Lewis, who will be screening his latest gore extravaganza, the diabolical The Uh-Oh Show!. This is Lewis’ first gross-out flick in seven years and is an unholy combination of blood, social satire and fairy tales. Bad Lit’s seen it and thinks it’s a real hoot and a holler.

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...

Dark Souls PosterDark Souls is a film from Norway known as Morke sjeler, which is currently in North America at various film festivals. The film takes a look at the growing ecological disaster known as the world and finds an intimate tale between a father and a dying daughter. Except this time, an oily mess outside most everyone's door turns the beautiful Johanna into a moaning, "zombified" (Dark) mess. Watch one man fight for what is right and for his undead daughter in this trailer for Dark Souls.
One of two synopses for Dark Souls (the other is on the film's website):
"A young girl, Johanna, is attacked and seemingly murdered. Her father receives a phone call from the police pronouncing her dead as he sees her walk in the front door of their house. Strange things begin to happen to Johanna, she is disorientated and becomes pale and unresponsive.

Roar Uthaug’s thrill-a-minute slasher “Cold Prey” was the first Norwegian horror movie I’d ever experienced, forcing yours truly to delve deeper in the country’s budding genre scene. Directors Mathieu Peteul and César Ducasse’s upcoming shocker “Dark Souls” looks just as impressive as most of the films I’ve encountered from that region. The clip embedded below — which arrives courtesy of Twitch — is loaded with intense imagery, ranging from a handful of zombified creatures and a plethora of power drill murders. What more could you possibly ask for in a horror movie? Oh, yeah. There’s a bit of cleavage, too, in case you were wondering. Blink and you’ll miss it, but I can assure you it’s there. Looks like Peteul and Ducasse have covered most of the bases. Good for them. Here’s the official synopsis: A revengeful father embarks on a dark thrill ride of lost memories,...

While we've made much of the growing Scandinavian genre film movement over the past few years the large majority of the films we've covered have come from the established film system, films made by established producers with backing from local film institutes, distributors and the like. But also springing up in the region is a growing Diy horror movement with fistfuls of low budget films turning up in the past couple years.
The problem, of course, with all low budget film movements is that the majority of the films that come out of them are horrible and verge on unwatchable. But every now and then the scene will produce a true talent, something raw and powerful. Mathieu Peteul and César Ducasse's Dark Souls (Morke Sjeler) may be just that.

The Melbourne Underground Film Festival returns to terrorize Australia with a selection of outrageous genre films for its 11th annual edition that will be held on Aug. 20-28.
For years now, Muff Festival director Richard Wolstencroft has been bemoaning the state of Australian cinema — and rightfully so — for abandoning its history of popular genre entertainment and settling for a state-sponsored industry of wussy indie fare. Well, looking over this year’s Muff schedule from a distance, it appears that the fest has gathered its most impressive lineup of bold and risky genre fare yet.
There’s the deep sea terror of Stuart Simpson’s El monstro del mar!, the outback nightmare of Road Train by Dean Francis, the Bdsm fantasy world of David King’s Purge, the chaotically violent world of Bad Behavior by Joseph Sims, the sexy and disturbing Burlesque by Dominic Deacon; plus Richard Wolstencroft’s own documentary...
