With Curtain Call, we asked our team what some of their most memorable and satisfactory finales were in the realm of gaming, and these entries are the result. Please note that they may include a bevy of spoilers concerning the endings in question and the plots they pertain to. You’ve been warned!
It’s not how you start, but how you finish. In the case of High Voltage Software’s cheesy sci-fi shooter sequel for the Wii, Conduit 2, you can substitute “start” with “spend ninety-nine percent of the game”, and this axiom still rings true. Why? Because despite a lackluster (though improved) experience fighting alien invaders across the globe while being annoyed by the disembodied voice of Kevin Sorbo now residing in your futuristic battle armor suit, Conduit 2 has an ending that totally nails the utterly ridiculous SyFy Channel nature of its up until then boring, cardboard story. I mean perfectly.

A homeless man showed up at the Good Morning America studio Tuesday morning with a knife and threatened to kill Michael Strahan, The New York Post reports.
At approximately 8 a.m., Andrew Johnson, 25, got into an argument with security at the sidewalk set of the series in Times Square. During the altercation, he pulled a knife and said he was there to kill Strahan, who is a part-time co-host on the morning show. A police officer "heroically tackled" Johnson and knocked the serrated knife out of his hand, an ABC News rep said.

Yesterday, Andrew Johnson, a member of the West Coast–based rap group Northstar who goes by the name Christ Bearer, cut off his own penis and jumped off a second-story balcony. TMZ first reported the lurid story, calling Johnson a "rapper affiliated with Wu-Tang Clan." Today, the Wu-Tang disavowed any association with the rapper, which is a pretty mean thing to do after a man has just tried to commit suicide by neutering himself. As Gawker writes: But the Wu apparently no longer fucks with him. A now-deleted post on Wutangclan.com read, "Parental Advisory : Don't Believe The Hype. This Mother Fucker Ain't Got Shit to do with The Wutang Brand." The post is gone, but the Wu-Tang blog is now running a TMZ story about Johnson's tragic, possibly suicidal episode. All mentions of Wu-Tang have been removed from the post and replaced with ellipses. Still, Johnson was once...

Frank Underwood’s behaviour fascinates us because it is dark, scandalous and perhaps because we believe it might just happen. Us politics is regularly shaken by scandal, most recently when it was revealed that members of the Obama administration may have targeted political opponents for tax inspections. This Top 10 considers some of the more dubious practices in Us politics.
1. Plenty of politicians use their office to gain personal wealth. One of the earliest such scandals to break in public was the ‘Teapot Dome’ scandal of the early 1920s. Despite the comedy title, there were no domes and no teapots involved. There were oil reserves in Teapot Dome, Wyoming. Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, sold the rights to the reserves, for cash, and cattle.
2. A more recent bribery case won attention when $90,000 was found in the home freezer of Louisiana Representative William J. Jefferson. Jefferson had been filmed apparently taking...

Newcastle United will confirm Premier League survival if they beat an already relegated Queens Park Rangers today at Loftus Road. Anything less and it could go down to the final day of the season if Wigan manage to get points away from the Emirates against Arsenal on Tuesday night.
For Qpr, there’s only pride to play for in the final home game of Premier League football for at least a season.
Here’s the team news ahead of the game…
Christopher Samba will be missing for the home side with a long term knee injury ruling him out. Andrew Johnson will miss the final two games of the season with his own knee problem, whilst Shaun Wright-Phillips is sidelined with an ankle problem.
Shaun Wright-Phillips (ankle) and Andrew Johnson (knee) will miss the remainder of the season – both have undergone surgery.

High street chain will also pay proceeds from charity singles in full, after accountant Deloitte finishes review of business
The stricken entertainment chain HMV is accepting gift vouchers to pay for products after administrators reversed their original decision .
Accountant Deloitte, which took control of HMV last week, also moved to reassure charities owed money from the sale of charity releases – including the Hillsborough Justice Collective single – that they would be paid "in full as soon as possible".
Nick Edwards, joint administrator for HMV and its Fopp offshoot, said he was pleased to announce that, after the conclusion of an assessment of the business, stores would honour gift cards.
"I can also confirm that all money raised by HMV for various charities will be paid in full. We recognise that both of these matters have caused concern for individuals and organisations affected and are pleased to have reached a positive outcome.

The dawn of a new Premier League season is almost upon us and it’s shaping up to be one of the most entertaining in its over 20-year history. For Qpr, the new season begins at home with a new look Swansea City as their opponents.
The R’s were in the centre of the dramatic climax to the 2011/12 season after Sergio Aguero’s late strike past former goalkeeper Paddy Kenny sealed Manchester City’s first Premier League title but results elsewhere also meant the defeat was enough for Qpr to survive the drop.
Whilst there was less drama on the final day of the season for Swansea, the club have had some major restructuring to do. After the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool – the team they defeated 1-0 in Rodgers’ final game at the club – chairman Huw Jenkins recruited footballing legend Michael Laudrup as heir to the Liberty throne.

According to Goal.com, Queens Park Rangers are preparing to sign veteran Tottenham Hotspur defender William Gallas on a free transfer.
Qpr boss Mark Hughes has already acquired 34-year-old Ryan Nelson on a free transfer from Spurs and the club are now trying to complete the deal of his former teammate Gallas, also 34.
New Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas will allow Gallas, who is on a £60,000-a-week contract, to leave White Hart Lane on a free after Tottenham completed the deal of Belgian giant Jan Vertonghen and also have Sebastian Bassong and Steven Caulker returning from their loan spells away. Speculation is Caulker will receive more game time next season and he has jumped ahead of the high-earning Gallas and the new Tottenham boss would prefer not to have such an expensive salary drainer on the bench.

Sky Sources are reporting that Junior Hoilett has agreed a deal to join Mark Hughes’ Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer.
The 22-year-old joins the London club after rejecting a contract extension offer at former club Blackburn Rovers, who last season were relegated to the Championship.
Earlier this week Blackburn had suggested that they had offered Hoilett a ‘fantastic deal’, although he turned down the chance to continuing playing for the club and began searching for a return to the Premier League.
The Canadian international winger/forward had caught the eye of a number clubs, namely North East rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland but his high wage demands were ultimately off putting.
The deal bringing Hoilett to Loftus Road is expected to be confirmed on Friday and he joins Andrew Johnson, Fabio, Robert Green and Park Ji-sung as new recruits.
More on this story as it develops.

Fulham welcome Norwich City to Craven Cottage this afternoon for what is very much a mid-table clash.
Martin Jol’s side are going through something of a mini rough patch at the moment. Nothing to be too concerned about, but they’ve lost their last three games on the bounce including a convincingly 3-0 loss to Swansea and a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to struggling Aston Villa. Will they turn it round against a Norwich side that haven’t won in their last 12 visits to the capital? He didn’t seem completely convinced…
“I don’t think there’s a big difference between the teams, the only thing is they have got a lot of players and they play in different systems and they use more players than we do.”

The first London derby of 2012 sees Fulham entertain Arsenal at Craven Cottage and Martin Jol will be wary of his side’s new found liking for conceding late goals. Amazingly, almost half of their last 20 matches (9 in fact) have seen them let in a goal in the 88th minute or beyond. An incredible stat and one that has cost them a dangerous amount of points in the league and a place in the Europa League competition.

Steven Spielberg seems hellbent on casting just about every talented actor he can in his long talked-about and finally-upcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln. Beyond Daniel Day-Lewis as the brilliant and ill-fated American president, the rest of the cast listing for Lincoln gives new meaning to the term “star-packed,” as it currently includes Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Hal Holbrook, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Joseph Cross, David Strathairn, Walton Goggins, Lee Pace, Jackie Earle Haley, and David Oyelowo. At this rate, I’m not entirely unconvinced that I haven’t been cast in this project. But Spielberg has now added another British actor to this most American of stories, casting Jared Harris as Ulysses S. Grant. As Spielberg’s film will focus on “the road to abolition,” the inclusion of Grant is a no-brainer, as the general was an essential part of the Civil War, and...

Based on the best-selling book, "Team of Rivals," by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin (who also adapted the script with Tony Kushner), the story focuses on the life of the former President, focusing on the man's rise to politics and his role in the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis is taking on the role of Lincoln with Sally Field playing his wife, Mary Todd. A release is tentatively scheduled for sometime in late 2012. It’s often said that the best teams can play poorly and still come away with three points. That’s a cliché of course but it proved relevant today as Tottenham came away with a 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, despite their opponents having the better of the game. Two own goals, one from Chris Baird, the other from Younes Kaboul,a fine effort from Aaron Lennon and a Jermain Defoe goal ultimately decided the day. A good win for Spurs, but Fulham can count themselves very unfortunate indeed.
So Martin Jol against his former club. So the only Spurs manager in the dugout will be a former one, Fulham boss and former Tottenham favourite Martin Jol. Finally, after waiting all summer for summer to arrive, it does. In October. If someone can explain this ‘Indian Summer’ term that’s bandied about, I’d gladly listen. There’s a time and a place for warm weather, and that place is called ‘on holiday’. Whoever claims that sunshine and heat make for ‘glorious’ conditions in which to enjoy football, is sorely mistaken.
Looking across the terraces, a sea of shaven heads red and dripping with sweat while trains and buses across the land are packed full of humanity at it’s clammiest, all accompanied with a scent that suggests antiperspirant has gone out of fashion.
In short, hot weather isn’t nice, it’s bloody horrible may it soon piss off so we can welcome back big jumpers, naked trees and rainy afternoons. Lunging tackles and match postponements, much more my cup of tea.

A slow Sunday of football culminated in a turgid clash between Fulham and Blackburn that ended in an uninspired draw. Neither side would be happy with the 1-1 result, both desperately needing a win but having to settle for a point after two spectacular goals from Ruben Rochina and Bobby Zamora which stood out against a backdrop of dull football. Junior Hoilett picked up what looked like a serious injury in the last minute to add further misery to the display.

There's little doubt where Robert Redford, who directs "The Conspirator," stands on current politics. He's in favor of civilian trials of the people captured and imprisoned in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. We can deduce this by seeing his latest movie as allegorical. The alleged conspirator in the film researched and scripted by James D. Solomon is a civilian, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), 42-year-old Roman Catholic who ran a boardinghouse at which men met to plot the kidnapping of President Abraham Lincoln. She is a widow trying to eke out a living by taking in boarders and, if we trust her testimony, she had no idea that her guests or her son, John Surratt (Johnny Simmons), were involved in a nefarious conspiracy. It's easy enough for us in the twenty-first century to look back at the trial and become disgusted with the prejudicial actions of the military court, determined to find her...

Four score and seven years ago, Robert Redford mattered. As an actor, as a filmmaker, as a founder of a film festival and independent film movement. It's not that Redford is suddenly irrelevant or talentless, it's just that he's sort of faded into the limelight. He's not the same shiny smiliing wiseass we loved from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or The Sting. He's not even the same craggy faced rugged fella from Sneakers. It's just kind of surprising that he's still making movies, considering that over the past decade, he's fired off only two, and both of those incredibly forgettable. I'm not sure what prompted Redford to suddenly direct The Conspirator, a film that seems apropos of nothing. Granted, it's a very solid dramatization of the trial of Mary Surratt, one of the conspirators brought up on charges for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Seward, and attempted assassination of Andrew Johnson.

Chicago – The Latin term “Inter arma silent leges.” (There is no law on the battlefield) is coldly stated in “The Conspirator,” directed by Robert Redford. In plain truth, the new film recreates one of the most controversial military trials in American history.

Today, April 15th, is the 146th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s death, assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. This is also the week of the 150th anniversary (April 12th) of the start of the American Civil War. Both these events reverberate to the consequences of trading in our freedoms during wartime, which centralizes power and legitimizes fear. The Conspirator is about Mary Surratt, a southerner who ran a boarding house in Washington, D.C., where the plot was hatched to murder President Lincoln.
The film begins on a battlefield during the Civil War, where two friends lie injured. Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) insists that his comrade...

The constitutional requirements for running for president are pretty simple. A candidate has to be 35 years of age and has to be a natural-born citizen. Conspicuously missing from that list: a requirement that a candidate has any real chance of winning.

I have just set my City University students their winter assignments and one of the questions concerns the ethical dilemma faced by a journalist who had to decide whether to breach the confidentiality of a source who had confessed to a murder.
By coincidence, just before I posted the assignment on the university website, I had read an article in the Independent on Sunday by Andrew Johnson about journalists confronted by the same predicament.
I say the same, but Nuon Chea – as second-in-command to the Cambodian despot Pol Pot – was responsible for the killing of many hundreds of thousands of people.
And he confessed his part in mass murder to the Cambodian journalist, Thet Sambath, on the condition that it could only be used as a historical record. It must not be used against him.
Sambath agreed, and went on to interview Chea in such detail that he recorded some 160 hours of filmed footage.

The relationships between rappers and presidents have always been tenuous at best. Or at least so we thought. This week, there have been two incidents that have united the worlds of hip-hop and presidential politics in ways that nobody really saw coming. Earlier this week, George W. Bush declared that the moment that Kanye West announced "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a telethon was the lowest point of his presidency. West responded in typical fashion, saying that he related to Bush because they both have been under the same kind scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Bill Clinton tipped his hat to Lil Wayne earlier this week in anticipation of the Mc's release from Rikers Island. "This guy's smart. And he's got abilities," Clinton said. Clint Eastwood's Hereafter considers the possibility of an afterlife with tenderness, beauty and a gentle tact. I was surprised how enthralling I found it. I don't believe in woo-woo, but there's no woo-woo anywhere to be seen. It doesn't even properly suppose an afterlife, but only the possibility of consciousness after apparent death. This is plausible. Many near-death survivors report the same memories, of the white light, the waiting figures and a feeling of peace.
The subject lends itself to sensationalizing and psychic baloney. Eastwood has made a film for sensitive, intelligent people who are naturally curious about what happens when the shutters close. He tells three primary stories. Their three central characters meet at the end, but please don't leap to conclusions. This is not one of those package endings where all the threads come together in a Coincidence that makes everything clear. They meet in...

Black Rock City (aka the Burning Man festival) is a gargantuan sprawl of temporary urban structures on an ancient lake bed, featuring more than 40,000 burners-in-residence and hundreds of odd activities going on at any given time. You could plan events ahead of time or wing it once you arrive, sure. But why make things more difficult than they have to be? The iBurn 2010 app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod has you covered.
Black Rock City does have its own Wi-Fi network, as befits this playground for techies, but reception is spotty. So the app is designed to work offline. After you download it, iBurn automatically caches Burning Man schedule information and maps of the Black Rock playa for later use. The handy features include buttons to geo-locate yourself on the playa, find the center of the city, get directions and descriptions for individual events, and save your favorites. Now...

One day you’re boinking the President’s daughter, and the next you’re the unwitting partner of an honest to goodness vampire, who just happens to moonlight (get it?) as a secret agent/weapon for the United States Government. That is the unenviable position 25-year old Zach Barrows finds himself in Christopher Farnsworth’s action/horror novel “Blood Oath”, which made news recently when it sold film rights to producer Lucas Foster (“Law Abiding Citizen”, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”). A movie adaptation is forthcoming. The vampire’s name is Nathaniel Cade, and thanks to a magic spell from a Louisiana witch, he’s been at the service of Potus for the last 140 years. Cade is less James Bond and more Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy”, in that he’s an undead/supernatural creature fighting for the good guys. It’s all thanks to a boozing but forward-thinking Andrew Johnson, the...

Last week we had a trade news post about Blood Oath, a novel about a vampire working for the president, a novel that was optioned to be adapted into a movie before the book even arrived in book stores. Something funny happened though on the road to bitching. We took a look at the blog of the author (Christopher Farnsworth) and didn't find him as hateful as we gleefully expected. Then Mr. Farnsworth braved the comment thread himself.
So I did what any real journalist would do at eleven in the morning on a Thursday. I finished my whiskey, finished my other whiskey, and tried sending an email to the address attached to the comment. The short story made even shorter is that Mr. Farnsworth was kind enough to sit down for coffee with me and talk for a while about his novel.
And also? Transcribing a 45 minute conversation takes a fuck longer than 45 minutes.

According to Heat Vision, Lucas Foster and his Warp Films have picked up the rights to “Blood Oath,” a vampire action novel written by Christopher Farnsworth, with the aim of fast-tracking a feature franchise about a vampire secret agent.
Think of it as James Bond but with fangs.
The book hit stores this past Tuesday.

Here's an idea I wish I'd come up with, much like Ooops! All Berries! Crunch Berries. A book called Blood Oath is being turned into a movie, and it's about...wait for it...a vampire secret agent. I have no idea if the book is any good, but that's a sweet place to start.
Actually, looking at the cover for Christopher Farnsworth's book, I can't say I'm a fan of the slug, "The President's Vampire." For a long time, I believe that office was occupied by Dick Cheney. Anyway, the guy who acquired the rights, Warp Films' Lucas Foster, recognizes that this could turn silly, but says Farnsworth sells it the right way. "It’s a big idea and it’s an idea that in the wrong hands could have been cheesy. He did a very good job of making the reader, and me, buy it. It’s the right...

Blame the Twilight series for all the vampire junk we will see from now till whenever people tire of it. Remember the good ole days when the hip Vampire stuff was Whedon’s Buffy and Angel series? man those were good times because it wasn’t so main stream and thrown in our faces with Team Jacob shirts and Team Edward hats and middle aged women along with teen girls going about as crazy as Beatlemania!

How many more twists on the vampire genre can filmmakers find? Given that the undead creatures of the night have been around for ages, the answer appears to be: plenty. Lincoln took a single bullet to the head from the gun of John Wilkes Booth, an actor who opposed the abolition of slavery and who was one part of a three-pronged conspiracy to upend the government (his co-conspirators were meant to kill Secretary of State William Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson as well, though Booth was the only one who carried out the plan). Last month it was rumored that Jonah Hex was reloading its ammunition to undergo reshoots. The news has been re-confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, and it doesn't appear to be an automatically bad prognosis for the movie, as many seemed to feel it was.
According to THR, the reshoots will only last ten days and not the full two weeks that was initially reported. Twelve pages of additional script are being added, along with a little more action. They've called Megan Fox, Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and Michael Fassbender back to do some shooting in Los Angeles. So while the new scenes may include President Andrew Johnson as hinted by the casting call, what really matters for 50% of the world population is that Fox may have a few extra scenes in that tiny, tiny corset. Maybe it'll take 5 of the 10 days just to shoot her scenes because she'll need to be let loose between gunfights.

A casting notice for Jonah Hex has revealed that the movie will have two weeks of reshoots starting on January 18. The notice is searching for actors to play Native American "Cassie," wife of Josh Brolin's Hex; a nine-year-old "Travis" that "must be a match" to Brolin and Cassie; and "Jeb Turnbull," the 30-year-old son of John Malkovich's Quentin Turnbull. From this, we can infer that the reshoots will involve some flashback scenes where Hex's family is likely put in danger. Actors are also needed to play "President Andrew Johnson," a "Johnson aide," and a "dead guy."
Bloody-Disgusting reports that Warner Bros. has brought in Constantine's Francis Lawrence to consult on the reshoots. Director Jimmy Hayward is also returning for the reshoots, though clearly Warner Bros thinks he could use some help.

There's a mistaken assumption among fans and readers that online outlets find some kind of glory in reporting bad movie news. You couldn't be further than the truth. We hate it, especially if it's a film you're really, really looking forward to. The only reason I'm reporting on possible Jonah Hex troubles is because I'm hoping it'll be swiftly debunked.
SpoilerTV is reporting that Jonah Hex will be undergoing two weeks of reshoots beginning in January 2010. The casting call that has gone out would suggest that it's pretty extensive stuff -- scenes will include more of Jonah's pre-scarred life with his Native American wife, Cassie, and his son Travis. Jeb Turnbull, son of John Malkovich's Quentin Turnbull, will also be added in, as well as President Andrew Johnson himself. (If you're an Andrew Johnson lookalike, get to L.A. They need you!)
