With great lead performances by Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving, a great musical score by Steve Moore, and great bloody action masterminded by director Joe Lynch, Mayhem is almost too much fun. It's the perfect example of a movie that knows what it is and is more than happy to deliver that to an audience eager to devour it. Lynch burst onto the genre scene with Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, a direct-to-video sequel that was far better than it had any right to be. More recently, Everly featured Salma Hayek in a furiously entertaining action picture that, again, exceeded expectations. Mayhem spreads that same action spirit out over a larger cast trapped in an office building after an outbreak of the so-called 'red eye'...

Out this August in the U.S. from Artsploitation—and July 31st in the UK/Ireland from Altitude—is acclaimed neo-slasher, Cub. The stylish, brutal Belgian horror film from director Jonas Goevarts blends killer kid with wilderness slasher for a lean, nasty piece of work set to the sounds of Steve Moore (Zombi, Adam Wingard’s The Guest). Shock Till…

The collector market for film fans has evolved quite a bit from when I was a young fan. Sure, there were opportunities for me to spend my money, but these days, there are so many better opportunities and better items. There's the entire poster phenomenon, best embodied by the success of Mondo, which has spurred what feels like an entire industry. I recently got talked into joining some commission groups, so now I've got some ultra-limited art coming my way that I look at as even more special because I had a hand in designing it. It was inevitable that soundtracks would also end up being major collector pieces, and one of the great frustrations for me when I was a younger film fan was realizing just how random the process is by which scores get released. There are some great companies now doing important archival work, like La-la-Land Records,...

The electronic revival is real, and it’s real good. From Steve Moore (Zombie, The Guest, Cub) to Jonathan Snipes (Starry Eyes, Room 237), to Jeff Grace (Cold in July) to the Giallo Disco crew like Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolor, traditional string stings aren’t as prevalent. The latest, tremendous example is Disasterpeace’s terrific It Follows score, the…

We here at Sound On Sight like to release our list as late as possible in the year. The way I look at it, the list is meant to represent what our writers have watched and championed throughout the year, and so we allow our writers until the 28th of December to submit votes for their 15 favourite films in the hope of coming up with a list that truly represents the wide spectrum of movies we cover year-round. This late in the game, it is safe to assume that just about every other website has released their top picks, but we believe our list holds value, if only because it is comprised of over 50 hardcore cinephiles worldwide. That said, since our writers are spread out across the globe, it makes it difficult for a movie like Inherent Vice (which was released in only two North American cities during 2014 itself) to crack our year-end list.

Australian brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, working off a short story (All You Zombies) by American science-fiction writer Robert A Heinlein, adapt a tale of self-destruction that hops back and forth across decades. This week we review their latest feature titled Predestination. But first we sit down to discuss The Guest, a pretty crafty genre pastiche written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard of You’re Next fame. Joining us is Sound On Sight’s managing editor, Deepayan Sengupta.

After having a great deal of twisted fun with the horror genre in You’re Next, writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard team up once again for the psychological thriller, The Guest. An homage to the thrillers of the 1980s, the film stars Dan Stevens as David Collins, a recently discharged soldier who takes it upon himself to visit the family of Caleb, one of his fellow soldiers who was killed in combat.
Caleb’s family is still grieving his loss, but when David shows up, he helps to assuage their pain and sadness while becoming the best houseguest anyone could hope to have. Caleb’s siblings, Anna and Luke, are initially hesitant about letting David stay, but he eventually wins them over. However, when a series of strange events start happening around town, it slowly becomes apparent that David may not be the man he claims he is.

Adam Wingard showed a talent for tongue-in-cheek thrills, riffing on the home invasion genre with You're Next, but with The Guest he's one-upped his game and chosen the perfect vessel for doing so in Dan Stevens. The "Downton Abbey" star plays David, a man who introduces himself to the Peterson family as a soldier and friend of their son who died in the war. More specifically he plays something of a Jason Bourne run amuck, though, for the Petersons, that might not necessarily be a bad thing... at first. Since the death of their son the Petersons appear to have grown apart. Mom (Sheila Kelley) and dad (Leland Orser) fight a lot while Luke (Brendan Meyer) is dealing with bullies at school and his older sister, Anna (Maika Monroe), is in her rebelious phase, trying to deal with the fact she's almost 21 and still living at home while saving for college.

Music collectors around the world are probably familiar with Record Store Day, an annual event celebrating independently owned and operated music retailers (a rare thing nowadays), which this year falls on April 20th. Store owners, bands, labels and fans across the globe mark the date, often releasing limited editions of new, classic or rare albums, most available only at indie record stores while supplies last. This year, UK label Death Waltz is unveiling some ultra-cool short run album pressings for the event that should have horror music fans drooling. Fans of the documentary Horror Business will dig this exclusive release of that film's score by Steve Moore of retro prog-rock unit Zombi, which could easily be mistaken for a lost Goblin or Fabio Frizzi score. Also on the list includes Antoni Maiovvi's score from Yellow, a short film homage to Italian giallo flicks of the '70s and '80s.
