'Long Overdue' Arrests Made of 2 Men, Now 65, in 1973 Slaying and Sexual Assault of California Girls
The families of two California girls found dead in 1973 have waited nearly 43 years for answers and justice. Authorities tell People they got some of that this week with the "long overdue" arrest of two suspects in the double homicide. William Lloyd Harbour and Larry Don Patterson were arrested Tuesday in Linda, California, and Oakhurst, Oklahoma, respectively, the Yuba County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Sheriff spokeswoman Leslie Carbah tells People the near-simultaneous arrests were coordinated to avoid having one suspect potentially tip off the other. The men are cousins, Carbah says. Jose Canseco accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun, and had to go undergo surgery in an attempt to save his right middle finger.
Jose Canseco Shoots Hand
Canseco, the former Major League Baseball All-Star, had been cleaning his gun at his Las Vegas home Tuesday afternoon when the gun went off, reported NBC News. The athlete, who hadn't known that the gun was loaded, damaged the middle finger on his right hand.
"It was a serious hand injury," Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddod said of the incident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. "There was nothing suspicious. There was no alcohol involved, just a misstep with a handgun."
Leila Knight, Canseco's financée, was in the house when Canseco had the accident with the gun. "I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," she told the Los Angeles Times.

From long credits to bullet time, here are a few techniques and film conventions we don't see in the movies these days...
Over more than a century, cinema has built up its own storytelling vocabulary. Thanks to generations of intelligent and groundbreaking filmmakers, movies contain a rich and complex set of editing, filming and framing techniques, most of them so firmly embedded in our subconscious that we don't even think about them while we're sitting in our local multiplex.
Inevitably, there are some aspects of filmmaking that have changed considerably over time. New ideas and conventions continuously float in, while old ones become over-used and phase out as a result. It's the latter we're focusing on here: the filmmaking conventions and techniques that are either becoming rare, or have vanished altogether. Bear in mind that some of the things below may suddenly come back into vogue very soon, while the...

“The Voice” has probably helped no one’s career as much as coach Adam Levine and his band, Maroon 5. While they certainly weren’t dormant, the NBC talent reality show revived the band and brought them back to a level they hadn’t seen since their breakthrough, 2002’s “Songs About Jane.” Ever since 2011’s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring fellow sometimes “Voice” coach Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5 has seldom been of a pop or AC chart. Just as Maroon 5 did on its last album, 2012’s “Overexposed,” for new set, “V,” the group also enlisted a phalanx of hit songwriters and producers — Ryan Tedder, Shellback, Dr. Luke, Sia, Stargate, Benny Blanco— to come up with the poppiest of pop material. The result is a shiny, pristine album that sounds great, if a little anodyne and generic. Maroon 5’s self-penned earliest hits like “This Love” and “Harder To Breathe” were less well-crafted,...

And yet, Fantasia 2014 has seen the unveiling of Let Us Prey, a new horror film by first time director Brian O’Malley, which is already making waves in the horror film circuit, and with good reason. Kevin Jarman was awarded a $510,000 settlement from Brooklyn Federal Court on Wednesday for breaking his ankle while being arrested for shoplifting in May 2011.
Shoplifter Claims Police Tripped Him During Arrest
Jarman, 50, was being arrested for shoplifting a bag of shrimp at a grocery store when he claims police intentionally tripped him, causing him to break his ankle and spend nine days in the hospital. He has since admitted to shoplifting.
According to the claim, Sergeant Samuel Morales refused to loosen the cuffs when asked by Jarman and caused Jarman’s fall by pulling the plaintiff while, essentially, stepping on his foot, making it impossible for Jarman to find his balance.
“Sergeant Morales, in effect, tripped Plaintiff,” reads the suit.
The suit goes on to allege that Officer Alex Safran, also present during the arrest, laughed at Jarman when he fell and threatened to post video of his fall on YouTube.

Hope Solo, the Olympic gold medaling American soccer goalkeeper, has been arrested on a pair of domestic violence charges.

Since her arrest, Solo has been held at the South Correctional Entity Regional Jail in Des Moines, Wash., without bail. Police are investigating the incident, which occurred overnight at her Kirkland, Wash., home. The athlete is said to have hit both her sister and nephew, who suffered "visible injuries," Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray told The Seattle Times.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred overnight at her Kirkland, Wash., home. The athlete is said to have hit both her sister and nephew, who suffered "visible injuries," Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray told The Seattle Times.
"There was a big party going on at her house. It was an out-of-control situation," Murray said. During the party, officers were called the home that Solo lives in with her husband Jerramy Stevens, who played tight end in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 2010.
Stevens was arrested for allegedly assaulting Solo back in 2012 a day before their wedding. Due to insufficient evidence,...

This week’s new entry in the Summer movie schedule has the distinction of pulling off the seasonal cinema trifecta. So, what’s this multiplex “hat-trick”? Well, number one, it’s a big studio action comedy. Number two, it’s a feature film remake of a decades old classic TV show. And the topper, number three, it’s a sequel. Usually TV adaptations are done in one, like The A-team and Bewitched. 22 Jump Street is the follow-up to 2012′s surprise smash 21 Jump Street, based on the late 1980′s Fox TV crime drama (created by The A-team’s Stephen J. Cannell with Patrick Hasburgh) that propelled Johnny Depp to stardom. But the flick from two years ago wasn’t a straight-faced, literal movie expansion. Taking a cue from 1987′s Dan Aykroyd/Tom Hanks starrer Dragnet, 21 was a loving parody of the earlier cop show. Can Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum possibly...

Michael Schur knows how to make comedy work when TV viewership is splintered by the internet and delayed DVR viewing. For him, nabbing a large audience isn’t a sprint so much as a marathon, and that philosophy has translated into a cult following for each of the series he’s helped create: The Office, Parks and Recreation and now the Andy Samberg-starrer Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Schur and his former Harvard buddy Daniel Goor set out with Brooklyn to reboot the cop comedy, drawing inspiration from such benchmarks as Barney Miller and Police Squad! They also have maximized laughs by mimicking the handheld shooting style of cop dramas. The show has won over critics and earned Golden Globes for comedy series and lead actor for Samberg. Awardsline: How did Brooklyn Nine-Nine get off the ground? Michael Schur: I was under a deal at NBCUniversal, and Dan Goor was the...

Marc Evan Jackson, Andre Braugher and Andy Samberg in Brooklyn 99.
In tonight’s episode of Brooklyn 99, we finally meet Kevin Cozner, the husband to Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), as the couple throw a party in their home. The 99 squad shows up and, as you would expect, hilarity ensues.
“He is a Classics Professor at Columbia, I’m a Police Captain and my Mother is a federal judge,” Braugher told TheBacklot recently, explaining the dynamics of the couple, “so it’s one of those New York intellectual families.” And while Holt is often teased for his robotic manner of speaking and general absence of emotion, what is husband Kevin like? “He’s a different speed [than Holt] but they make sense together,” say series star Andy Samberg, who plays Det. Jake Peralta.

Justin Bieber may have the support of friends like Kylie Jenner as he navigates his egg-toss vandalism scandal, but other celebrities like ‘Community’ star Joel McHale and ‘Supernatural’ hottie Jared Padalecki have publicly blasted Biebs with no mercy.
The Internet exploded on Jan. 14 when Justin Bieber‘s house was raided for eggs (among other things) and his friend Lil Za was arrested for drug possession, and now stars like Joel McHale and Jared Padalecki have publicly given their two cents on Justin’s egg-cident.
