Hulu series Utopia Falls takes a future-set sci-fi premise and injects with a pop culture explosion of music and dance.
Utopia Falls may, upon first glance, seem like an aesthetically clinical future-society-type story, but the Hulu sci-fi series is set to showcase its hybrid genre nature as a paean to the arts, specifically the entirety of a forbidden pop culture of the past. – Let’s just call it Logan’s Run meets Fame.
The 10-episode hourlong series is set in the far future on a colony, focusing on a group of song-and-dance-inclined teens whose worldviews become upended after being exposed to an archive containing a forgotten pop culture panorama of music, literature, etc., resulting in a clash between the newly-edified and those attempting to uphold the traditions of their idyllic existence. Indeed, it’s a time-worn tale of generational clashes told through a sci-fi lens.

Donald Trump’s border wall is the inspiration for a new unscripted travel-comedy series in development by Sonar Entertainment and comedian and actor Felipe Esparza (Last Comic Standing).
The project is one of the first from Sonar’s Factual side, headed by former Tricon exec Andrea Gorfolova, who came over to Sonar following the company’s acquisition of Tricon Films & Television last year.
As part of the potential series description, Esparza asks, “What’s 2000 miles long, costs over $25 billion to build, and is filled with narcos, deadly terrain, and jokes – lots and lots of jokes?” For Esparza, that’s The Wall, the front line that defines the highly charged debate over the border separating the U.S. and Mexico.
In the multi-part project, Esparza and his band of fellow comics take an up close and personal look at the U.S.-Mexico border, bringing unconventional riffs...

CANNES -- Grabbing younger viewers, a growing interest in all things to do with China and the ever-problematic issues of financing topped the agenda at this year's MIPDOC, the two-day market devoted to documentaries and factual fare that precedes the Riviera-side program sales market kicking off Monday.
"To pull in younger audiences you really need something that is going to be shocking, that is actually going to grab them," said Joe Houlihan of U.K. production company TwoFour, which is presenting its new factual format "Make My Body Younger".
The show features people who have subjected their bodies to physical excesses such as alcohol and drugs and uses virtual reality techniques to simulate an "autopsy" on their bodies to show the extent of the damage they have inflicted.
"You have to find ways of making them turn to the show, if feels like its some form of lecture they will simply turn off," he added. "Health will always be a genre people want to know about. The challenge is about how to move it on and make it different."
The need to reach young viewers so beloved of advertisers is changing the tectonics of the documentary market, said Andrea Gorfolova, president of Canadian producer/distributor Tricon Films
"We watch television very differently than we used to.

TORONTO -- Responding to declining license fees and changing viewer trends, Canadian independent producers weaning themselves off government subsidies and competing in international markets are increasingly becoming more competitive here. "We've made a conscious decision that our programming must have international appeal," Andrea Gorfolova, president of Toronto-based Tricon Films & Television, said of the 5-year-old independent producer. Gorfolova's latest coup is selling Restaurant Makeover, a reality series featuring an interior designer and chef working against the clock to renovate and relaunch a struggling restaurant, to Food Network Canada and Food Network U.S.
