Last October, fans of MTV's Scream series were given an early Halloween treat when the network announced that the show had been renewed for a third, albeit shortened, season, and now it's being reported that the series could reboot with a new plot and new characters.
Deadline reports that MTV and Dimension TV are considering focusing on a different story in Scream Season 3 after following high schooler Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) and her Lakewood friends as they tried to survive a masked killer in the first two seasons (and a Halloween special).
No official confirmation has been made for these plans, so it's uncertain if a rebooted story will actually be featured in season 3, but Deadline reports that the cast is being allowed to take on other acting roles, with Fitzgerald recently coming on board Fox's Behind Enemy Lines pilot episode.
Additionally, a showrunner still has not been introduced for season...

MTV is on the verge of rebooting a reboot.
The basic cabler is in the very early stages of completely overhauling Scream — and if all goes according to plan, would feature an all new cast and storyline when it returns for Season 3.

Scream fans may have their sights firmly trained on Tuesday’s upcoming Halloween special, but we now have word that MTV has renewed the slasher-horror series for a third season.
There is one snag, though; when Scream does make its return, it’ll be for a six-episode run, whereas the previous two seasons have comprised 10 and 13 episodes, respectively. It’s understood MTV is also casting the net in search of new showrunners to replace Michael Gans and Richard Register, who will depart the series adaptation after season 2. This is the third showrunner change in as many seasons, considering that Gans and Register were drafted in to fill the void left by Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia following Scream‘s inaugural outing. News regarding cast members and a premiere date are also being kept under lock and key at this time.

Earlier during Scream’s Sdcc panel Q&A, Bella Thorne teased that her character Nina — who was famously the first casualty of the show’s mysterious slayer — “will be back,” though it was unclear in what capacity other than “less dead,” which could mean flashbacks. Or something other.
Scream debuted earlier this month to 1.03 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating.

A new take on the "Scream" franchise calls for a new take on its iconic Ghostface mask, and that's just what the upcoming MTV series has in store.
Entertainment Weekly shared a first look at the mask that will grace the face of the new, kept-under-wraps-for-now villain on the series, and while it's quite different from the Ghostface that "Scream" fans already know, that's entirely the point.
"The [original] mask is so iconic," explained executive producer Jaime Paglia in an interview with EW. "If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren't following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience."
Instead, this new mask is its own entity -- while also purposefully calling to mind some other classic horror villains. As executive producer Jill Blotevogel tells EW, in addition to evoking the spirit of the original Ghostface, it's also meant to...

I want to like you so badly, Scream, but you’re making it so goddamn difficult.
This summer, MTV is unveiling a TV adaptation of the beloved horror-comedy franchise, and though one of the trailers, slaughtering the other MTV stalwarts, did make me crack up, Entertainment Weekly’s reveal of the “updated” mask the series’ killer will don is just one of the most dispiriting things I’ll have to report on in a while.
Fans of the franchise will only need a cursory glance at the new facepiece to see what I’m talking about – the thing just isn’t scary, at all. It looks like a mix between the generic masks worn by rampagers in The Purge, a porcelain Phantom of the Opera face and something you might find in Christian Grey’s Red Room of Pain.

I'll be honest: I always found the original Ghostface mask (based on Edvard Munch's famous "Scream" paintings) a little silly. That said, it fit nicely with the jokey, tongue-in-cheek nature of the original film series. MTV's new small-screen revival of the franchise, however, has gone with a more overtly scary look for the new incarnation (as revealed by EW): So why the new version? Here's executive producer Jaime Paglia to explain: “The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience." And if the mask reminds you of Michael Myers' white "William Shatner" visage, you wouldn't be far off: “It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask,...

Last year we learned that MTV's soon to premiere "Scream: The TV Series" will lose the iconic 'ghost face' mask of the film series in favor of something else. Today, EW has unveiled a first look photo of the new mask which has roots in not just the original but other serial killer masks like Jason Voorhies and Michael Myers.
Director Wes Craven, who created the original mask, says: “The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.” Executive producer Jaime Paglia says the reason for a different mask was because the new show doesn't follow any characters from the original, so using it "would be misleading the audience".

While the "Scream" films, at 90 minutes each, were able to follow and make fun of the slasher film mold, MTV's upcoming TV series adaptation has to take a different route.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, executive producer Jaime Paglia says that on change they have had to make is that the body count has to be spaced out and time devoted to these characters which will allow us to care about the before they get taken out:
"What we try to do in every moment is separate out the fact that this is a town where people are being stalked and look at them individually as characters, figure out what their secrets and lies are, and what their relationship dynamics are going to be. So if you were to watch this as a regular teen soap, you would be engaged with them and care about them and the stakes would be there.

Sneak Peek the screenplay for the first episode of "The Flash" dramatic TV series, written by Jaime Paglia, Chris Rafferty and directed by Millicent Shelton:
In other news, actor Wentworth Miller ("Prison Break") has joined "The Flash" as DC Comics' super-villain 'Captain Cold':
'Leonard Snart' aka 'Captain Cold' was created by writer John Broome and illustrator Carmine Infantino as the leader of the 'Rogues' and amortal enemy to 'Barry Allen' aka 'The Flash'.
Snart has no innate superhuman powers, relying on his 'cold guns' and instincts. Over the years Snart had modified his weapons to allow a variety of effects such as a cold beam that freezes anything it hits instantly, creating a cold field where people and objects literally stop in their tracks.
Cold uses this ability to slow down The Flash's movements, bathing his opponent in a wide beam of ice designed to freeze the skin.

For his first venture into network TV, director Alex Proyas won't be straying far from the dark urban settings, sci-fi themes, post-apocalyptic shadings and overall gothiness he's explored in films such as "The Crow," "Dark City" and "I, Robot." As reported by Deadline, Proyas is attached to direct and exective produce a fantasy-tinged sci-fi drama entitled "Evolve" for ABC. Based on the "Toxic City" trilogy of novels by British author Tim Lebbon, "Evolve" is being written and executive produced by Jaime Paglia, co-creator of the Syfy series "Eureka." Lebbon's website describes his novels as "'The Hunger Games' meets 'The X-Men'" as a city (London in the books, Los Angeles in the TV show) is quarantined by the military after an attack with a mysterious biological agent. I never got into the Syfy Channel’s “Eureka”, it was always a little too silly for me, but this new show from one of the creators of “Eureka” doesn’t sound half bad. Plus, it has Alex Proyas onboard. Jaime Paglia, a co-creator on “Eureka” has a new show he’s set up at ABC called “Evolve” that he’s currently developing. The show will be based on the “Toxic City” trilogy of novels by British writer Tim Lebbon. Evolve is set two years after a mysterious biological agent is released over Los Angeles when the city is still deemed too toxic to inhabit and remains sealed off from the rest of society.
