On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). A short wretch and slight taste of bile comes upon realizing we are firmly in “awards season,” that time of disgrace and degradation recently portended by the first round of Look Upon My Suffering Narratives––Bradley Cooper took two hours to apply a fake nose, but is that braver than Michael Fassbender never blinking?––and established, now, by the announcement of Gotham Award nominees. Credit where it’s due, though, that this voting body gives a mite more attention to films of substance and note: leading the pack are Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, while a director nod went to Raven Jackson for All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Cristian Mungiu earned a screenplay nomination, and Franz Rogowski might win a best actor prize.

All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh led the Gotham Awards Nominations today, with some love for Celine Song’s Past Lives and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and with a Best Performance nod to Ryan Gosling for Barbie after the indie-centric awards removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for big-budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
All Of Us Strangers was nominated for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead and Supporting Performances for Andrew Scott and Claire Foy. Past Lives was nominated for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance by Greta Lee.
The disappearance of the decade-old budget cap, which had been set most recently at $35 million, is the biggest change this year. The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announcing the shift last summer, said it was meant “to broaden our reach in terms of recognition and accessibility to the wider community.

There has been an outpouring of love for Kelly Reichardt as of late, with the “Showing Up” helmer awarded a Carrosse d’Or at Cannes – only the fourth woman to be honored this way – and now a Pardo d’Onore Manor at Locarno.
But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the U.S. director, described by the Swiss festival as a “committed, political and independent auteur.”
“Things have gotten easier over time,” Reichardt tells Variety ahead of the event, looking back on her 28-year career.
“I have done a lot of work in the last two decades and I work in a similar kind of mode and budget size. People are familiar with my producers and know them to be very reliable people. I’m not having to prove myself at every outing.”

Exclusive: Netflix finally is due to get back up and running on action-thriller Rebel Ridge after an 11-month hiatus.
Filming is set to restart on April 25 in the U.S. after production came to a halt in June with the abrupt departure of star John Boyega.
The Star Wars actor left the movie mid-shoot citing “family reasons.” Speculation swirled online about Boyega’s dissatisfaction with the production, but that was denied by his reps and the streamer.
This isn’t a low-budget movie, so the lead actor exiting mid-shoot posed a significant creative, financial and practical hurdle. That’s part of the reason it has taken so long to get back underway.
Since then, Brit Aaron Pierre was cast in the Boyega role. He is known for his turns in The Underground Railroad and Krypton, and the rising actor also has Amazon’s Foe and Disney’s The Lion King...

John Boyega has dropped out of the upcoming Netflix film “Rebel Ridge” midshoot citing “family reasons,” according to a Netflix spokesperson.
“’Rebel Ridge’ is pausing temporarily as we look to recast John Boyega, who needed to leave the project for family reasons,” a Netflix Spokesperson said in a statement to TheWrap. “We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. The film commenced production in Louisiana on May 3. A replacement for the “Star Wars” headliner is underway. Production was initially supposed to begin in April of last year but was postponed due to the pandemic.
Plot details have been kept under wraps on the project that is directed by “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room” director Jeremy Saulnier.

Exclusive: John Boyega has exited Netflix movie Rebel Ridge mid-shoot with “family reasons” cited by the streamer as cause for the abrupt departure.
The production is currently paused but we understand Netflix is working hard to find a replacement for the Star Wars actor and someone is likely to be drafted in in the next few days. Filming began on May 3rd in Louisiana.

Exclusive: Kelly Reichard’s First Cow, based on her frequent collaborator Jonathan Raymond’s 2004 novel The Half Life, brings new life to pre-statehood Oregon and the early Americans seeking to stake their claim in the burgeoning Pacific Northwest.
The A24 film, which is up for three Film Independent Spirit Awards including best feature and best director among its string of honors from critics groups this awards season, centers on the friendship between a kind-hearted cook named Cookie (John Magaro) and King-Lu (Orion Lee), an entrepreneurial-minded Chinese salesman. A24 has revealed two exciting new projects in the works: The latest collaboration between Kelly Reichardt and Michelle Williams, as well as a new TV series produced by Amy Adams. “Showing Up” is set to mark the fourth Reichardt film to star Williams, following “Wendy & Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Certain Women.” The project is said to be a vibrant and witty portrait of an artist in the lead-up to a career-making exhibition. Reichardt announced the project during a conversation with “Manchester by the Sea” filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan on The A24 Podcast.

What a busy morning! Not only did the National Board of Review announce its winners, the Film Independent Spirit Awards revealed their nominees. It was quite the precursor day, to say the least! Nbr gave their top prize to Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, while the Spirit Awards were led by Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The former snubbed Promising Young Woman as a film, while citing Carey Mulligan in Best Actress, while the latter gave it three nominations, though also snubbing it in Best Feature. Among completely shut out titles, for one reason or another, we have The Father and News of the World. How much does this mean? Well, it remains to be seen, but it’s certainly good news for those titles cited, while at least a slight concern for those left out in the cold. Read on for all of the nominees and winners…...

This year’s awards season, delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, finally got underway with the announcement of the 2021 Gotham Awards nominations on November 12 (last year’s big reveal was on Oct. 24). These awards are presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) and honor the best of the year as determined by small committees of film journalists and festival programmers. The five Best Feature nominees, which were all directed by women, are: “The Assistant,” “First Cow,” “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” “Nomadland” and “Relic.” Scroll down to see the complete list of contenders.
Will these awards preview the Oscars? Perhaps. Last year’s Best Feature award went to “Marriage Story,” which did go on to reap a Best Picture bid. However, that was the exception rather than the rule. Indeed, its rival Gotham Awards nominees — “The Farewell,” “Hustlers,” “Uncut Gems” and “Waves” — were all snubbed by the Academy Awards.

The starting pistol of awards season has been officially fired with the 30th annual IFP Gotham Awards announcing its nominations and making history. Among them are “The Assistant” from Kitty Green, “First Cow” from Kelly Reichardt, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” from Eliza Hittman, “Nomadland” from Chloé Zhao and “Relic” from Natalie Erika James.
In the best actor category, Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous nomination for his work in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a performance likely to be shortlisted by many awards bodies over the next few months. The other nominees included Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Jude Law (“The Nest”), John Magaro (“First Cow”) and Jesse Plemons (“I’m Thinking of Ending Things”).

With each successive film she directs, Kelly Reichardt refines and clarifies her unique aesthetic, one that’s rooted in gentle observation and cumulative grace notes. Set in 1820’s Oregon, First Cow, Reichardt’s latest feature, follows two men—Cookie (John Magaro), a soft-spoken cook, and King-Lu (Orion Lee), a Chinese immigrant new to the region—who start a business selling oily cakes at a local trading post. In order to make the cakes, however, Cookie and King-Lu are forced to steal milk from a new cow purchased by a wealthy English chief who lives in the community, putting themselves and their new operation at immediate risk. It’s a portrait of an American community in progress at a time when the country’s capitalist society, and its hard-lined values, were still being developed.
Yet, First Cow also feels like a grab-bag of allusions to Reichardt’s filmography. Shades of her previous work like Old Joy,...

Is this the new feminist minimalism? As the definition of an independent film has shifted with the ever-expanding budget divide in American filmmaking — particularly Hollywood cutting back on its mid-range projects — when it comes time for awards season, it’s often only the highest profile of “indie films” that get recognized. While we do our best to recognize the films that often get unfortunately, a new awards has launched that honors the best of truly independent American cinema, featuring films all under a $1 million budget.

Earlier today, the 2016 Ifp Gotham Independent Film Award nominations were unveiled, officially kicking off the precursor season. Leading the charge was Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, which score four nominations, more than any other title. Considering how this is a sturdy launching pad for Oscar hopefuls, it seems safe to say that the movie isn’t going anywhere. It appears poised to be a major Academy Award threat, including for Casey Affleck in Best Actor. Wins here will certainly go a long way, but right now, getting these nominations is an excellent start for the film, along with the other honorees. Kicking off the onslaught of awards this year, as always, is the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which celebrates its 26th anniversary. Usually a strong slate highlighting some of the year’s best films, 2016 is no different as Manchester by the Sea leads the pack with four nominations. Close behind is Moonlight (which will also pick up a special ensemble award) and Paterson with three each overall.
Rounding out the Best Feature line-up, along with the three aforementioned films, is Certain Women and Everybody Wants Some!!. As for the Best Documentary line-up, Cameraperson, I Am Not Your Negro, O.J.: Made in America, Tower, and Weiner all made the cut. With Krisha, The Witch, The Fits, Elle, Morris From America, Jackie, and more also getting nods, the list makes for the ideal what-to-watch-before-the-year-is-over rundown.

In pacing, mood, and form, Certain Women is undoubtedly a Kelly Reichardt film (and we’re glad), but those who can make that distinction will be all the more likely to spot some incongruities. For one, it’s an omnibus film that takes the format and its possibilities very seriously, in turn giving its incidents an added tension – so it is when there’s simply less time to linger. It’s also set outside her beloved Oregon, a state she’s done more for than any working filmmaker, or perhaps just any filmmaker, period.
This became the crux of my interview with Reichardt, who I’d spoken to when her great (and perpetually under-appreciated) Night Moves opened in the spring of 2014. Now seated in a midtown hotel, we had a largely off-the-cuff conversation — short story: I wasn’t supposed to speak with her during the press day, so I just...

IFC Films is acquiring U.S. rights to Kelly Reichardt‘s Montana-set drama “Certain Women,” which stars Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, the company announced Wednesday. Written and directed by Reichardt, the film debuted at Sundance and will be released later this year. James Le Gros, Jared Harris, René Auberjonois and breakout talent Lily Gladstone co-star in “Certain Women,” which is based on the short stories of Maile Meloy. The reigning queen of American independent cinema has a rich history with Sundance — she premiered her debut film 1994’s River of Grass (which was recently digitally restoration) and Old Joy (2006) there and saw 2010’s Venice-tiff-nyff preemed Meek’s Cutoff find additionally play but the chances of seeing Kelly Reichardt’s sixth feature film premiere in Park City are highly unlikely. Shot the past spring in Montana with stalwarts Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, James Le Gros, Jared Harris and Rosanna Arquette, we’re more inclined to think that the Altmanesque-sounding Livingston is best suited for Cannes and what would be Reichardt’s first Main Competition bid. Based on the NYTimes best of 2009 short story collection Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It, Spwa recently landed the international rights to the picture.

It might be a case of deja vu all over again for director Jeremy Saulnier. It’s hard enough breaking into Sundance, but the festival’s Spotlight section features about eight films that have landed a theatrical release deal and are being championed as favorites from the film festival circuit (some have pending releases just after January and some are up for major award consideration). Saulnier premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight with 2013’s Blue Ruin and that was followed by stops just about everywhere including Tiff and a couple of U.S. play dates and this didn’t prevent the festival from inviting the film all the same in 2014. With an almost identical route this time out and the same critical support, Green Room connected with the same auds this year and could make a quick detour before being released theatrically on April 1st by the A24 film folks.
