Movie writers and long-term collaborators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are arguably most known for their work on HBO’s Game of Thrones. However, the two have worked on a range of other extremely popular projects, such as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 3 Body Problem, and Leslie Jones: Time Machine.
The two almost added to this list a new Star Wars trilogy that they almost took up back in 2019. In an interview earlier this year, Weiss and Benioff revealed exactly what led to the cancellation of the project, which they ironically wanted to title The Last Jedi.

Exclusive: Death and Other Details co-creator/executive producer Mike Weiss has joined CBS’ drama series FBI as executive producer and showrunner. Meanwhile, Allen MacDonald has been tapped as executive producer and showrunner of NBC’s Chicago Med. Both Wolf Entertainment/Universal Television dramas are Top 10 broadcast series in Live+7 Nielsen viewership.
Weiss and MacDonald fill the showrunner vacancies left by the departures of veterans Rick Eid (FBI) and Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider (Chicago Med) who had been at the helm of the two series from the start. (Eid continues as showrunner of Wolf’s Law & Order.) The showrunners of the remaining FBI, Chicago and Law & Order series are staying put.

During Netflix’s upfront presentation last week, the streaming service promised “additional episodes” of 3 Body Problem, the hugely expensive sci-fi drama from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but what does that mean exactly?
“Additional episodes” could mean just about anything, but 3 Body Problem showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo reached out to THR to clarify that the new deal was for “seasons” of 3 Body Problem. Yep, that’s plural. “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end,” Weiss said. “And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started.“
The exact number of “additional episodes” wasn’t specified, but Benioff added, “By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we’ve devoted to it.

One of the biggest 3 Body Problem mysteries since the show ended has been: What did Netflix’s renewal announcement mean, exactly?
During the streamer’s upfront presentation last week, Netflix promised “additional episodes” of the acclaimed sci-fi drama to “finish the story.”
Of course, “additional episodes” could mean anything from two episodes to five seasons and, naturally, many fans worried that the ultimate answer would be too close to the former for comfort.
But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo assure things are going to be just fine (for the show, at least, if not for their ensemble drama’s characters facing an alien invasion). While the trio didn’t reveal the exact number of episodes in their new deal, they emphasized it was for “seasons” — plural — and that the number of hours aligns with their original plan to adapt author Liu Cixin’s two remaining novels in his Hugo-winning trilogy.

The eight-seasons-long Game of Thrones series is widely regarded as one of the most popular and successful novel-based adaptations of all time, with writer cum producer David Benioff credited as one of the show’s executive producers, showrunners, and writers. But while most of the saga was a masterpiece, they somehow managed to mess up the series finale, which didn’t sit well with fans.

That being said, infuriated fans still blame Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who was the other EP, writer, and showrunner for GoT, for ruining the perfect end for their favorite lore, seemingly because of the canceled Star Wars trilogy they were supposed to tame afterward. However, many don’t seem to realize that this story also has an unexplored perspective they never really came to know.

FX and Hulu’s historical drama Shogun premiered on February 27, 2024 and did the seemingly impossible. Throughout the years, many shows have tried to claim the title of “the new Game of Thrones,” but Shogun became the first title to actually pull off such an ambition, unanimously dubbed as such by many fans and critics alike.
This year’s sensation just received a promising but also scary update: it might just extend far beyond the original mini-series. Here’s what we know so far.
Shogun Seasons 2 & 3 Are In the Works
FX is teaming up with original novel writer James Clavell’s family to continue Shogun beyond Season 1 — which was supposed to be the only one. A team of writers has been assembled to pen out the scripts of not one but two more seasons. Bold move.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!
The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s,...

In the scientific world, there remains to this day no single solution to the three-body problem. But if you — like us — are fans of Alexander Woo and Game Of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's Netflix series 3 Body Problem on the other hand, it turns out the solution is really quite simple. More series! And that's exactly what we'll be getting. Check out the streamer and showrunners' official announcement of 3 Body Problem's renewal below:
Now, true to the spirit of the brain-bending sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem's renewal isn't 100% straightforward. The series' renewal comes with confirmation that Woo, Benioff, and Weiss will get to take their ambitious (and seriously pricey) adaptation of Cixin Liu’s masterful trilogy of novels "through to its epic conclusion." When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

The Game of Thrones finale left fans shocked as well as divided, particularly when it came to Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) descent into madness and destruction. While many were left questioning the character development and unexpected shift in behavior, the showrunners and the director have provided some insight into the reasoning behind Daenerys’ actions.
A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin have long been beloved by a cult following. As a result, the HBO adaptation of the series achieved enormous mainstream success. Throughout its eight seasons, Game of Thrones left no stone unturned to traumatize its fans by killing off characters whenever they got the chance. Both books and the television series have had fans bawling over the loss of their favorite characters, including Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn Martell.

House of the Dragon was given an almost impossible task. Game of Thrones is considered a cultural phenomenon; it has raised the bar for quality and changed the way TV series are produced. However, all fans know that the first rule of this fandom is not to talk about the latest seasons.
The series' controversial finale, which was not supported by the original source material, undermined the audience's trust in the universe. It took a lot of skill and effort to fish something worthwhile out of the ashes and ruins that Benioff and Weiss left behind.
The first promotional footage of the series left conflicting impressions, and casting decisions raised questions. Some fans awaited House of the Dragon armed with skepticism, bias, and a willingness to bury the project under tons of criticism. But the first episode came out, and for many, skepticism gave way to surprise and then excitement.

Having become a brand in their own right thanks to their work on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss quickly (and anticlimactically) wrapped up the iconic TV show and jumped aboard the Netflix ship to create 3 Body Problem, their new big thing. While proving to be divisive, the new sci-fi series received mostly positive reviews — and recently found an unlikely fan and supporter in the King of Horror himself.

Recently Netflix released the first season of 3 Body Problem, based on the book of the same name by Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin. This novel and its two sequels in the 2000s made Cixin the most popular author in his country.
With such fame, a movie adaptation was only a matter of time. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, took over the development of the adaptation.

With such fame, a movie adaptation was only a matter of time. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, took over the development of the adaptation.

George Martin has been building the world of Ice and Fire for decades, and HBO’s TV adaptation allowed the whole world to marvel upon his creation. Unfortunately, as you know, the TV show went off the rails at one point — and according to the latest information, Grrm was actively trying to steer it back in the right direction.
That… Didn’t work out. Here’s how the events unfolded.
George Martin Started Worrying in Season 5
While the distinct lack of new ASoIaF books tells us that Grrm doesn’t necessarily know what happens next in his series, he has always known what doesn’t happen. The celebrated author saw the first signs of Game of Thrones’ downfall as early as Season 5: that’s when he noticed Benioff and Weiss’ creative… Differences with him.

“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Whenever novels are created into live-action series or movies, a large part of the fandom is left disappointed as the live-actions are not always very close to the original source material. A similar thing happened to the iconic drama series Game of Thrones which was largely based on George R.R. Martin’s novel series of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Starring “3o Coins’” Miguel Angel Silvestre and “The Palace’s” Katia Fellin, “Weiss & Morales” has gone into production in the Canary Islands, boasting the credentials of a textbook procedural appealing to current market appetites.
As co-production ramps up between free-to-air players in Europe, led very often by its state-backed networks, “Weiss & Morales” links two of the continents’ most powerful public broadcasters, Germany’s Zdf and Spain’s Rtve, which produce with Zdf Studios. The latter is also handling worldwide sales outside Spanish-speaking territories.
Also producing are Galicia-based Portocabo, which in the space of 10 years has pioneered co-productions between Spain’s Galicia and Portugal (“Dry Water”) and Spain and France (“Hierro), and Nadcon whose head, Peter Nadermann co-produced iconic Nordic Noir titles “The Killing” and “The Bridge” when at Zdf.

Game of Thrones creators met with George R. R. Martin for the first time in 2006 to discuss the possibility of making Martin’s best seller A Song of Ice and Fire into a series. Martin revealed that he was approached by other directors who wanted to make his work into a feature film. However, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss shared the writer’s desire for a series adaptation and even answered his questions about his novel.
Game of Thrones creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff answered George R. R. Martin’s questions right to make the series happen
The creators’ answer to one question may have eventually made the epic fantasy series possible. While Martin did not reveal whether the creators answered it right at the time, they shook hands on the project right after that meeting and were in business with HBO.

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, 3 Body Problem, is an ambitious project. However, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were up to the challenge. The source material is dense enough to make for compelling television and the first season would prove to be a new hit for Netflix as the show cracked the Top 10 on the platform. The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. Emilia Clarke’s arc in Game of Thrones has been a subject of both fury and annoyance over the years — and for good reason. Be it her manipulative benevolence, or little by little transformation into the Mad Queen, or her full-blown turn to tyranny — Danaerys Targaryen’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride and her character remains an enigma whose first moment is as memorable as her last, and every second in between is just as remarkably imprinted on the audience’s memory.
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones [Credit: HBO Entertainment]But even in a character as legendary as the Mother of Dragons, there exist moments of conflict that underline the HBO series because of the socio-political climate of the reality we live in. It is one such moment that had Emilia Clarke breathing a sigh of relief while filming a particularly seductive scene on the show.

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

HBO’s Jon Snow-centered Game of Thrones sequel has been shelved, Kit Harington confirmed on Tuesday.
“There are no plans for it at the moment. It’s off the table for the foreseeable,” Harington told the Associated Press while promoting his new film, Blood For Dust.
Game of Thrones, based on the fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, finished its eighth and final season in 2019. HBO’s prequel series, House of the Dragon, premiered in 2022, with a second season scheduled for this June.
Also in 2022, plans surfaced for a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow, with Harington attached to reprise his role.
Updates on the status of the potential project have remained sparse ever since, but showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told The Hollywood Reporter in January they hadn’t written off the sequel entirely.

A series that has attracted both a lot of love and a lot of hate, Game of Thrones is – whether you like it or not – a pillar of modern television. HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga has earned numerous awards and nominations, with series creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff being lauded as geniuses.
But, as you will probably know, by the time the series actually ended, a lot of hate had accumulated, and the creators’ decision for the series finale made a lot of fans angry, many still consider the ending of Game of Thrones to be one of the worst endings in the history of television.

No stranger to adapting revered novels, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss joined forces with writer Alexander Woo for the big-budget sci-fi thriller The 3 Body Problem. Known for revolutionizing the medium with Got, which kickstarted the trend of big-budget TV shows centered around spectacle, Benioff and Weiss took a similar route for their Netflix show.
However, unlike Got‘s initial seasons, the Netflix high-budget series fails to encapsulate the books’ proficiency, leaving fans discontent, as its future moving forward appears uncertain.

No fandom has seen death quite like the fandom of Game of Thrones. Neither the widely popular television series nor the source material ever shied away from killing people left and right. While some deaths were too gut-wrenching to watch and made viewers shed some serious tears, others were quite satisfying to watch, to say the least.

Game of Thrones was one of the biggest shows on the air in the past decade. Based on A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, the popularity of the show was so great that it became the biggest phenomenon of this century.

Very few people in show business have a better understanding of what it takes to spearhead a massive, multimillion dollar production on the scale of "3 Body Problem" than showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Benioff and Weiss guided "Game of Thrones" to eight total seasons, many of which included the most expensive installments of television ever committed to the small screen at the time, while Woo served as producer and writer on "True Blood." With so many moving parts to keep track of and so many urgent matters demanding attention at any given time, in all honesty, it's not terribly shocking that even this top creative team would have to scramble at the last minute to include a scene of utmost narrative importance.

Among the many influences that the show pulled from, one influence in particular was something that came up time and time again, something the creators of the show discussed at length during the interview.

One of the many influences on the film was a 1980s miniseries, V, that Weiss and Benioff watched as kids and even read the novelization of. When asked about the influence it had on 3 Body Problem, Benioff said, in an interview with Josh Horowitz:

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem was actually finished and ready to be released on the streamer in mid-2023.
But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo realized their sci-fi epic adaptation of Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novels was missing something: Their first episode quickly plunged viewers into a mystery surrounding the suicides of top scientists and a mix of brainy characters — but too quickly and, even, rather confusingly.
