When "Shazam!" first flew into theaters in 2019, the young-at-heart hero was a breath of fresh air. After being called upon by an ancient wizard, 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) gained unbelievable powers as the adult superhero, Shazam (Zachary Levi). And as any teen boy would, he immediately put those powers to excellent use by skipping school, wreaking (accidental) havoc, and bonding with his foster brother, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).
At the time, "Shazam!" was a surprisingly pleasant entry in the lackluster DC Extended Universe. And though it found interesting ways to integrate horror, it veered away from the grim Snyder-era films with its distinct sense of humor. Between being genuinely great and earning plenty of love, a sequel was inevitable. Four years and a complete upheaval of the Dceu later, the Shazamily has returned for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods"! And based on the early buzz, they're more magical than ever.

It’s hard not to feel bad for the next few DC movies. While The Flash has been described as a universe reboot, setting up the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plans, dubbed “Gods and Monsters,” the others feel like unwanted leftovers. That’s particularly true of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a movie whose predecessor contained only the slightest Snyderverse connections, but doesn’t seem to be setting up anything in DC Studios’ future.
Of course, we could also talk about the movie as, you know… a movie! Not as a part of a larger story or a franchise extender, but as a two-hour or so piece of entertainment that we watch and enjoy on its own merits. That approach served the first Shazam! well, which updated the Golden Age hero Captain Marvel to not only give him a copyright safe (if infinitely...

CinemaBlend Assistant Managing Editor Eric Eisenberg calls the film “a super fun and worthy sequel.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicks off its next series of entries, dubbed Phase Five, with the upcoming Feb. 17 release of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” It’s curtains for the film’s Monday evening premiere in Los Angeles, with first reactions to the superhero sequel pouring in on social media.
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly reprise their eponymous superheroes in what has been advertised as the most ambitious “Ant-Man” entry to date, sending Rudd’s Scott Lang and his family of shrinking scientists, including his now-grown daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), to the dangerous Quantum Realm.
The new landscape presents challenges for the heroes, including the emergence of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who is set to play a major role in Marvel entries to come, including 2025’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.”
Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas also return for “Quantumania,” joined by a supporting cast that includes David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper,...

Marvel held the first public screenings of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” on Monday – the film’s gala premiere in Los Angeles, alongside the first screenings for journalists – and the social media embargo has lifted. You know what that means: Reactions!
Do people like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (which by the way is the film that finally kicks off Marvel’s Phase 5)? It’s actually pretty mixed. Some people loved it — the usual Marvel humor remains — and others thought that as fun as it was, it was a bit thin. Others still liked that it seems to have given the MCU focus and a clear direction after the lack of a clear myth arc following “Avengers: Endgame,” while still managing to tell a standalone “Ant-Man” story. But still more people said as much as they enjoyed it, the multiverse-heavy plot felt a bit impenetrable.
But universally, people who saw...

Many fans of HBO’s The Last of Us can’t stop thinking about episode 3, starring Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett. Out of approximately 80 minutes, at least 60 contained tear-jerking moments as a doomsday prepper named Bill (Offerman) fell in love with an optimistic traveler, Frank (Bartlett). Several critics have already dubbed episode 3 as one of the best TV episodes of all time. Offerman and Bartlett knew that was the case as soon as they saw the script. Here’s what the stars said about episode 3’s incredible writing.

Critics of “Life Itself” have panned the film so swiftly and with such finality that director Dan Fogelman has felt the need to fight back.
“A couple of the early reviews that have come out about this movie feel so out of left field to everybody who’s a part of this movie,” Fogelman told TooFab. “There’s a disconnect between something that is happening between our primarily white male critics who don’t like anything that has any emotion.”
Despite Fogelman’s defense, several of the negative reviews have come from women — including IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, who calls it “an unholy combination of ‘Rashomon’ and ‘Babel,’ [which] strings together seemingly disparate plotlines into one massive, messy tableau of life itself, a life that zings toward the warm embrace of death.”
The critiques are especially crushing considering that Fogelman’s hit ABC series “This is Us” garnered eight Emmy nominations this year.

I’m thrilled for the Black Panther’s cinematic success. Don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s just another a Marvel superhero movie that happens to be about an African superhero. This phenomenon is a great adventure and so much more. It includes the success of a positive message and of a black director and of a mostly black cast. Black Panther explores tough topics including, but not limited to, nationalism, isolationism, the black experience in the Us, and the black experience internationally.
This movie quickly went from an event to a celebration. It’s a celebration for the African American Community. The Sunday New York Times had an opinion piece on how it’s a celebration for the Black Nerd Community. On NPR, I’ve heard Jamie Broadnax, the insightful genius behind the Black Girl Nerds podcast, speak about what it means to her. I’ve also read...

Despite HBO’s continued support of “Confederate,” a series being developed by “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, critics of the project are planning an online protest to publicize their concerns with the project.
April Reign, who created the #OscarSoWhite hashtag to call attention to the lack of Oscar representation for people of color, has shifted her focus to “Confederate.” The series imagines an alternative historical timeline in which the South had won the Civil War, and slavery is legal. The new modernity would be set during the Third American Civil War.

Per the release, “The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.

Not all shows are live-tweeted (tweeting along with a show as it airs live), a big fan passion needs to be involved. Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are probably some of the most prominent but it spans network television, cable TV, and streaming projects. When the live-tweeting trend began (and before the mute feature was in use) I wound up unfollowing a lot of folks because I was annoyed at getting spoiled just by glancing at Twitter. If you don't watch live you're just out of luck if you wanted to use Twitter during those times of day. I've said many times Twitter and users might benefit from live-tweet chatrooms (just think of the advertising Twitter could do there) for the more popular shows, but muting has certainly cut down the chatter for those of us who don't want to (or can't) get involved while a show is on.

Once again fangirls led the way at the San Diego Comic-Con. It’s not “new news” anymore, but I’m again reminded how far we’ve come from the days when a woman or girl entering a comic shop was met with a universal hush of curiosity and awe. Today, convention attendees are just about equally split between men and women. And the influence that fan girls, beyond female creators, have on Geek Culture is important.
One observation is that so many fan girls who step up to the plate are essentially pioneering entrepreneurs. There’s no real guidebook or established plan about how to make it in a historically male dominated industry. Although there may be historical precedents, the intersection of fandom and social media has provided opportunities for nimble fan girls to make their voices heard both to influence the conversation and become an important part of it all.
