Like so many of our readers, I'm always fascinated by behind-the-scenes stories and changes that lead to the finished film we see on the big screen. Cursed Films on Shudder has been tackling productions that have achieved near mythical status due to their "Cursed" productions and the new season features The Wizard of Oz, Rosemary’s Baby, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Stalker, and Cannibal Holocaust. In our latest Q&a, we caught up with series writer / director / producer Jay Cheel, who talks about surprises this season, interview highlights, and what he'd like to see in a third season:
For this season of Cursed Films, did you have a personal favorite that Had to be included in this round?
Stalker is definitely a personal favourite of mine and I was thrilled that we had the chance to include it. It’s a bit of an esoteric entry, but I’m excited...

Cursed Films, the documentary series from Jay Cheel, has been part of the Shudder lineup for months now, but now the five-part project that dives into the stories behind a variety of movies including The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, The Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Poltergeist, is headed home today on both Blu-ray and DVD, courtesy of the fine folks at Rlje Films.
Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with Cheel recently and during our interview, he discussed how Cursed Films came together at Shudder as well as his experiences during the interview process for the series, the controversy surrounding the tragic deaths on Twilight Zone: The Movie, and more.
First of all, congratulations on season two. Getting to come back, that has got to be a really good feeling for you, I'm sure.

Mitch Horowitz has spent the majority of his life fascinated and entrenched in the occult. His fascination started to take shape in his youth and over the years, he has become an expert in alternative spirituality, mysticism, and the occult but rather than taking on a sensationalist approach, Horowitz has provided levity and scholarly eye to the subject. He's a well-respected author and lecturer and most recently, he brought his knowledge to “Cursed Films.”
The documentary series which is being released on digital, DVD, and Blu-ray on August 18, features a wide variety of interview subjects but Horowitz is one of the few "film outsiders" brought on by writer/director Jay Cheel to provide a deeper reading of the films and the tragedy that surrounds them.

Writer/director Jay Cheel's love for the strange has been on display in pretty much all of his work, including his two feature documentaries Beauty Day and How to Build a Time Machine. And so his venture into TV feels like it was perfectly suited for the director, especially on the heels of his short film Twisted in which he explored a bizarre 1996 event in which a drive-in theatre playing the movie Twister was destroyed by a tornado.
Written and directed by Cheel, "Cursed Films," currently streaming on Shudder, is a five-part documentary series, exploring the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood's doomed productions, often thought to be cursed. The thing about curses is that when you obsess over them, their omens appear to multiply. As a child of the ‘80s, the so-called Poltergeist curse looms largest in my memory amongst films supposedly plagued by supernaturally bad luck. And as a paranormal pop culture researcher, the fact real skeletons were used in the finale’s swimming pool scene makes the notion of a curse all the more compelling. As purely a storytelling device, a curse would make sense; it tracks. Of course there is most likely no truth to it either.
To be sure, there is indeed tragedy connected to the film. Most notable is the murder of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne in November 1982–five months following the film’s June release–and the death of 12-year-old Heather O’Rourke during the filming of Poltergeist III due to complications from an undetected bowel obstruction.

Shudder’s new documentary series Cursed Films explores the odd happenings surrounding Hollywood horror flicks, and the purported supernatural reasons behind such bizarre occurrences.
However, in the premiere episode on the streaming service dedicated to horror, executive producer Jay Cheel tackles the William Friedkin-directed classic, 1973’s The Exorcist. The film—adapted from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel based on a purportedly true exorcism case—is about a young girl possessed by the demon Pazuzu. Incidents such as actress Linda Blair’s on-set injury, as well as a fire, and off-set deaths of family members all added an heir of curse to the film.
For believers in the curse, engaging in activity like playing with a Ouija board onscreen, or simply acknowledging a demon, is to invite it in. To convey the power of this faithful thinking, Cheel interviews an alleged exorcist, and even films a series of exorcisms. The...

Some movies are born bad. Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist; these are iconic horror films with reputations of misfortune and mishap. Either due to a series of grim coincidences that form a pattern or one or two notable tragedies, a handful of films are said to have near-evil legacies. Maybe it really is as Shirley Jackson mused in The Haunting of Hill House? If some spots attach to themselves an atmosphere of goodness, “It might not then be too fanciful to say some houses are born bad.” So why not movies too?
Within horror films, curses are caused by the bite of a werewolf or a boy who willfully passes along a demonic Std, or a shamed elderly woman who utters an incantation over the button she’s torn from someone. Perhaps it is not a leap then that the production behind a movie about Satan’s offspring would likewise...

Starting tomorrow on Shudder, Jay Cheel's five part docu series Cursed Films takes a look at some of horror's most infamous films. Films not lauded for their contribution to the genre but for strings of tragic, untimely events that led to the loss of lives tied to each production. Starting tomorrow night with The Exorcist for the next three week his series also takes a look at Poltergeist, The Omen, The Crow and Twilight Zone the Movie. While some events happened away from the production the latter two were well known for accidents that happened on set. We’ve all heard some of these before. Hello again, dear readers. Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s nice that, if nothing else, we still have entertainment to help us through all of this. Most of us are preparing for another month of self-isolation and thankfully we have a ton of horror and sci-fi titles hitting various VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month of April. Also, I decided to feature some special streaming events here as well, beyond the regular digital releases we usually get, as I thought it might be helpful to have as many distractions as we could possibly get over the next few weeks or so.

If you’re a movie fan, then chances are you’re already familiar with the concept of “cursed films,” which is when a project’s legacy has something of a sinister undertone to it due to extenuating circumstances beyond any sort of normal production woes. And for their new series entitled Cursed Films, Shudder is diving into whether or not films like Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie were actually doomed from the start, or victims of being dealt an unfortunate hand by fate.
The two episodes this writer had the opportunity to check out were for Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist as well as Richard Donner’s The Omen, and for the most part, I found them extremely entertaining, although admittedly, neither one was very in-depth as a whole. Last year, AMC’s horror-centric streaming service Shudder unveiled the compelling documentary “Horror Noire,” examining the role African-Americans played throughout film history. That feature’s success sparked a desire for the service to cater to more niche facets of film history, and their next foray into that arena is “Cursed Films,” which looks to examine films that have long histories of being cursed. The material is interesting, especially in conjunction with the features the five-part documentary series covers, but director Jay Cheel takes too many tangential digressions to keep things from feeling tiring.
When the 1982 feature “Poltergeist” debuted it was quickly tempered by the murder of actress Dominique Dunne. Actors Will Sampson and Julian Beck would pass after the film’s sequel came out, while leading child star Heather O’Rourke passed at just 11-years-old while working on “Poltergeist III.” It’s easy to see where audiences would start to wonder...

Written and directed by Jay Cheel, Cursed Films is a five-part documentary series making its premiere on Shudder in April. We have a look at the the first trailer, brand new art from Matt Ryan Tobin, and premiere details:
"Cursed Films is a five-part documentary series which explores the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood’s notoriously “cursed” horror film productions. From plane accidents and bombings during the making of The Omen, to the rumored use of real human skeletons on the set of Poltergeist, these stories are legendary amongst film fans and filmmakers alike. But where does the truth lie? Cursed Films reveals the events that haunted these productions through interviews with experts, witnesses and the cast, directors and producers who lived through the real-life events. Were these films really cursed, as many believe, or just the victims of bad luck and bizarre circumstances?
The series will premiere on Shudder Thursday,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best film (or film-related) podcast?
Neil Miller (@rejects), Film School Rejects
There are a great many podcasts in my life — from the ones I host to the ones hosted by close friends — so it’s hard to approach this subject without wanting to selfishly yell “One Perfect Pod!” Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, here’s a real favorite: “The Mothership,” from the folks at USA Today. More importantly, it involves two of my favorite Twitter pals Brian Truitt and Kelly Lawler. Its mandate is broad, which means there’s video game and comics talk...

Less an evaluation of a sci-fi trope's feasibility than a nerd-friendly meditation on how we develop the fixations that will dominate our lives, Jay Cheel's How to Build a Time Machine introduces two middle-aged men whose exposure to an eon-leaping H.G. Wells story pointed them in very different directions. Unusually handsome for a niche documentary, the film should charm auds on the fest circuit and make a respectable showing on video. If Spike Lee ever makes his promised adaptation of one subject's memoir, the doc's profile will rise significantly.

Now in its seventh year, the New York City-based and documentary-focused film festival aptly titled Doc NYC has become a mainstay on the documentary festival circuit. Along with series like Hot Docs and the more avant-garde-heavy True/False, Doc NYC is slowly but surely becoming one of the must-attend festivals for cinephiles who have an affinity for the non-fiction side of cinema.
And yet, it’s still a festival on the come up. With only six previous iterations in its history, Doc NYC is one of the hundreds, if not thousands, of festivals or film series that make up a calendar year in New York and the film world in general. Marking this year’s event with 110 features (roughly 44% of which are directed or co-directed by women, I will add) including 18 world premieres and 19 Us premieres and even a small repertory sidebar, this is set to be the biggest and arguably best lineup yet.

You have probably heard (or used) the expression, 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.' Well, a good one happened in Thorold, Ontario, Canada in 1996. A pregnant summer storm blew through the niagara region, obliterating one of the screens of the Can-View Drive-In, co-incidentally, while the they were showing the tornado blockbuster Twister. Director Jay Cheel, whose time travel fathers-and-sons reverie, How To Build A Time Machine, played earlier this year, returns with Twisted, a short bon-mot of a film which gorgeously re-enacts the tornado hitting the drive in as witnessed, in full detail, by several customers that evening. The niggling fact remains, however, that it didn't happen...exactly. Employing handsome widescreen cinematography, Cheel offers an evocative love letter to the...

Review: How To Build A Time Machine Is A Graceful Look At Two Interesting Men And What Inspires Them
The famous Serenity Prayer of american theologian Reinhold Niebuhr is as follows: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Jay Cheel's beautifully rendered How To Build A Time Machine tells the stories of two men who are on the verge of that wisdom, and in the act of telling, examines line between our boundless imagination and the rigorous nuts and bolts of acquiring the knowledge required to achieve some measure of it. Shot over five years, the film follows former Pee Wee's Playhouse animator Rob Niosi who has been building a replica prop of the time machine from George Pal's 1960 film adaptation of H.G....

"Believe it or not, I'm from the future and I've come here to try and save your life." Now this is something quite unique. How to Build a Time Machine is a documentary that follows two different men as they set out on a journey to build their own time machines. One of them is a theoretical physicist, the other is a stop motion animator, and they both seem inspired by The Time Machine book/original movie. This is a very small indie documentary - though I can't really tell if it's a mockumentary with fictional setups designed to feel real, or actually a real doc where they found two people who are really trying to build time machines. It might be the latter. Either way, this looks fascinating and intriguing and worth watching. Take a look below. Here's the official trailer for Jay Cheel's How to Build a Time Machine,...

North America's largest documentary film festival just announced its full line-up and schedule. Hot Docs returns to Toronto in its 23rd year, and as per usual, it features a massive number of titles for lovers of non-fiction cinema: 232 features and shorts from 51 countries, to be exact. Offering a slew of new docs, including Jay Cheel's time travel reverie How To Build A Time Machine, De Palma, Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow's feature interview with the film director on his 50 year career, Espn's epic 7.5 hour Oj Simpson: Made In America, The Ross Brothers 'pep rally' doc Contempory Color and Ferne Perlstein's The Last Laugh, a primer on how to (or not to) make jokes about the Holocuast featuring Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Sarah Sliverman and...

We are big fans of Beauty Day here at Twitch (full disclosure, I contributed to a commentary track on the DVD) and are happy to see documentary filmmaker Jay Cheel back with a sci-fi inflected documentary, How To Build A Time Machine. A couple of years ago, we reported on this project, which was originally focused on the Jon Titor (a self-proclaimed man from the future) story, but the documentary has evolved a fair ways since then, and has locked in on two subjects: Rob Niosi, a man who has been building a time machine replica (from the classic 1960s film The Time Machine) for many, many years, and PhD Physicist and author Ronald Mallett, who has been researching the nuts and bolts (i.e. mathematics)...

Documentary director Jay Cheel has been hard at work on his follow-up to the immensely entertaining Beauty Day (review) for a couple of years. The new documentary How to Build a Time Machine originally had a conspiracy theory element but as is bound to happen as you meet people and conduct interviews, the movie now focuses primarily on two individuals: Rob Niosi, a man who has spent years building a full-scale replica of the prop from the 1960's movie The Time Machine, and Ronald L. Mallett, a physicist who has dedicated his life to researching the real life scientific possibility of time travel.

Pina Directed by: Wim Wenders Featuring: Regina Advento, Malou Airaudo, Ruth Amarante Written by: Wim Wenders Being a fan of both documentaries and the work of German filmmaker Wim Wenders, I went into Pina with the hopes that my absolute distaste for modern dance might be tempered by some great filmmaking and an interesting story. Unfortunately, as Pina's tagline states, this is 'a film for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders' and not a film for Jay Cheel. Be warned, if you don't like modern dance or ballet, Pina might not be for you. The film focuses on the work of its title character/subject, Pina Bausch. It seems Wenders assumes that most people watching the film might be coming in with a basic knowledge of Pina and her work. Either that or he simply doesn't care, which is sort of respectable I suppose. I personally had no idea...

After pounding out a final 4 films on Thursday I wrapped up my 17th year at Tiff. I was a young lad of 20 my first time here. I think 1995 was the first year it was called Tiff. It used to be something ridiculous and pretentious like 'The Festival of Festivals!'. Many of the films were at the old Uptown Theatre. I loved, loved, loved that balcony. Four Rooms had it's premiere in 1995 and still remains the one film I didn't get into when I used to rely on the rush lines. I did see Leaving Las Vegas and To Die For that year though as well as my introduction to Midnight Madness with Tokyo Fist. It was also the year that 'The Gasman' was born. Big year! Moving on... The first movie I saw was a little ditty from the U.K. called Sightseers. Directed by Ben Wheatly (Kill List...

Over the years, I've talked about Tiff goers desire for yelling before the movie begins. It started as simple hooting and hollering and then it morphed into that pirate 'argh' thing with the anti-piracy ad and now it's just ridiculous. Not only do you still get the pirate thing, but now some people yell 'shiver me timbers'. Give me a break. Now there's a Dolby ad with a whispering voice that some people feel the need to yell 'creepy' to. But the worst thing yelled out occured at the Rob Zombie film. As the movie started someone yelled 'Hail Satan!, then someone retorted with 'Hail Hitler!'. I shit you not. How messed up is that? Naturally, it was met with anger and serious threats of violence. So, don't make make Hitler comments, people. It's frowned upon. The first film I saw today was also the best film I've seen so far.

September. There's a few things that you can count on: An upcoming NHL season, leaves of red, yellow and orange, and Peyton Manning suiting up for the Colts. Wait..what? I've just been told that there's a strong possibility that the NHL season won't start on time, leaves are either still green or dead because the seasons are all screwed up and Manning plays for the Broncos now. What the hell happened? At the end of the day though, there is one thing that you can hold on to. Tiff. It's back. I'm there. Let's do this. I realize that Tiff started on Thursday, but I'm a busy guy. I have dogs now and they come first. Yes, I still have my bunny, Janis Hoplin, but she requires less involvement from a pet standpoint. It's 15 seconds in to this blog and I'm already distracted. If you came to read about pets,...

“Whenever there's a horse in a movie, I think, ‘This is a documentary about a horse that's in a movie and doesn't know it.’” That quote comes from Jay Cheel, a documentarian (Beauty Day) who also runs The Documentary Blog. He was tweeting back at me in response to a question about transparency, but this context doesn’t matter. By itself it, the statement raises a question that I’ve thought about many times in the past with animals. For a specific comparison, is there much that’s different between the lead horse in War Horse and the featured horses in the documentary Buck? Actually, maybe Buck isn’t a good example since it’s mostly about training, which is what’s done for animal “acting.&rdquo...

Why Watch? Jay Cheel (Beauty Day, How to Build a Time Machine) has an incredibly fresh eye for documentaries. Not content to keep things dry, he hunts down compelling subjects and attacks them with nimble creativity, cool camera work and strong storytelling flair. In The Politics of Competitive Board Gaming Amongst Friends (which, yes, sounds like a Community episode title), he almost-satirically points out the ridiculousness of high intensity, low stakes game-playing by taking it seriously. Specifically, he breaks down the dynamic between four friends bellying up to the table to play Settlers of Catan. This is a board game movie we can get behind. What will it cost? Only 10 minutes.
