Switzerland's Locarno Festival is entering its 70th year with a diverse lineup of pictures that has become characteristic of the annual film gathering which attracts top independent film talent from around the world.
With a look to the future, the event has rebranded itself as simply the Locarno Festival, with new initiatives including a Locarno Kids section and a Youth Advisory Board.
This year's opening night film is Noemie Lvovsky's dark drama Tomorrow and Thereafter, starring Mathieu Amalric. And the festival will close with a rock tribute film from Kevin Merz: Gotthard – One Life, One Soul.

Take Shelter (15)
(Jeff Nichols, 2011, Us) Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Tova Stewart. 121 mins.
After a year-long disaster-movie onslaught, apocalypse fatigue could well be setting in, but this one's worth the extra effort – particularly since it's less about the end of the world than the threat of it. That plays large in the mind of Shannon's modern-day Midwestern Noah, who sets about building his underground ark. His wife worries more about his mental health, and their day-to-day problems. Brilliantly constructed and performed, it's a domestic saga infused with haunting, unnamed dread.
50/50 (15)
(Jonathan Levine, 2011, Us) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick. 100 mins.
The Knocked Up of cancer movies? Not quite, but this is funnier and more frank than most terminal illness movies. Gordon-Levitt is a potential victim, to whom Rogen offers blokey support.
The Deep Blue Sea (12A)
(Terence Davies, 2011, UK) Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston. 98 mins.
Davies again recreates postwar Britain, this...

A nimble, non-judgmental account of Ghana's 2008 presidential contest that shows the real battle is between the past and the future
Directors Jarreth and Kevin Merz play the role of backstage observers in the course of this nimble, non-judgmental account of Ghana's 2008 presidential contest, trailing the campaign cars down dusty country roads or hanging out with the candidates as they mop their brows beneath the rotating overhead fans. Ostensibly the tussle is between the right-leaning Npp and the left-leaning Ndc. The real battle, though, appears to be between the past and the future, as the nation toils to shake off the "dark days" of neo-colonialism and embrace free, open and fair elections. Along the way, the film paints a portrait of an engaged, energised electorate, thronging the rallies and queuing for 12 hours straight at the polling stations. It's a good foundation; something to build on.
