Fierce protests: The 2024 Cannes Film Festival opens in less than a fortnight and is once again set to be the backdrop to fierce French labor protests. Zac revealed earlier this week that a collection of around 200 French film festival workers — a combination of Cannes workers and workers from other festivals across France — are planning protests during the event over pay. The group’s frustrations are two-fold: they are first rallying against the pay packages they receive from their employers, which they say are inadequate and do not account for arduous overtime hours frequently clocked due to job demands, while the second bone of contention is France’s unique unemployment insurance program for entertainment workers and technicians. Known as Intermittence de Spectacle, the scheme supports entertainment workers on...

Exclusive: It was more than a year ago that a 45-year-old British woman, Nicola Bulley, went missing walking her dog in the sleepy northern English town of St Michael’s on Wyre.
What followed was three weeks of frenzy, one of the country’s most publicized, televised searches for a missing person in recent years that ended in tragedy when Bulley’s body was discovered on February 19. A few months later, a coroner determined that Bulley’s death was due to accidental drowning.
For Kate Beal, CEO of Confessions of a Psycho Killer indie Woodcut Media and founder of the UK’s nascent Association of True Crime Producers (Atcp), who was a similar age to Bulley and is also a mother, that three-week period and the media scrum that accompanied it did not sit comfortably, and she set about mulling over how the true crime TV community could ensure there was not a repeat.

Rupert Murdoch’s TalkTV is going online-only two years after launching with fanfare and following the suit of its star presenter Piers Morgan.
“Two years ago, we would not have been brave enough to launch a channel without a linear presence, but audiences of all ages have moved fast and smartphones are now the primary device where news is consumed,” said a note to staff from TalkTV-owner News UK’s Broadcasting President Scott Taunton, reported by Guido Fawkes. “We need to adapt to this as a priority. We are therefore intending that Talk comes off linear television from early summer and our focus will be on streaming.”
Linear TV has been “a good marketing and awareness window” for TalkTV but investment needs to be focused “where the eyeballs are,” added Taunton.
The news won’t come as a huge surprise to keen followers of the British media landscape following Morgan...

Bad Week For ITV Carolyn McCall and Phillip Schofield
Abuse of power?: Anyone at ITV who thought the Phillip Schofield drama would all blow over quickly was living in dreamland. Late last Friday afternoon, just as we were all putting down our pens for the Bank Holiday weekend, the man who had just left This Morning in a hurry after two decades on the sofa used a lengthy mea culpa to confirm what so many had believed to be a rumor for so many years – that he had had an affair with a much younger colleague during his lengthy stint on the daytime stalwart. Piers Morgan name-checked Meghan Markle during his acceptance speech at the Sports Journalism Awards.
Morgan received the Scoop of the Year award at the ceremony on Monday evening (6 March), for his interview with Cristiano Ronaldo.
While acknowledging those who’d contributed to him getting the accolade, the broadcaster decided to mention Meghan as a person responsible for his success.
“I’d also like to thank Meghan Markle, without whom there wouldn’t be a TalkTV Piers Morgan Uncensored,” he told the crowd.
According to journalists at the event, this remark was met with groans and other audible expressions of discomfort.
The Independent has reached out to representatives for the Duchess of Sussex for comment.
Morgan has been a long-time critic of Meghan Markle and left his anchor position at Good Morning Britain after he, the programme and ITV were heavily criticised for his comments on her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Ant and Dec have been criticised for a prank on the opening episode of the new season of Saturday Night Takeaway.
Fans of the show were left upset last night (25 February) by a baby scan prank on a father-to-be.
Liam, described on the programme as a “serial jokester”, was pranked by wife Amy, who was in cahoots with ITV presenting duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly to get revenge on him.
The prank saw the couple (who were genuinely expecting a baby boy who has since been born) attend a fake scan, in which they were shown a video of a baby that was not theirs, making rock star signs when the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody” played.
In the clip of the prank happening, Liam says he is left “speechless” by what he’s seen.
Viewers were not impressed. “Fake baby scan?? Too far, nothing but cruel,” posted one fan on Twitter.

Nadine Dorries, a polarizing former culture secretary for Britain, is set to host a new Friday night talk show on conservative channel TalkTV.
Debuting on Feb. 3, Dorries, who is still a member of parliament (MP), will kick off her show with an exclusive one-on-one interview with former prime minister Boris Johnson, who resigned last July after a string of scandals.
Dorries was an ardent supporter of Johnson’s, and stuck by his side when most of the Pm’s former ministers had condemned his actions around “partygate” — a series of parties held at Downing Street during Britain’s lockdowns.
The weekly, hour-long show will be called “Friday Night with Nadine,” and is billed as an “irreverent look at the week’s news and a lively mix of topical chat with guests from the world of politics, culture and sport.”
Dorries’ time as culture secretary was fraught with a series of gaffes.

Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late Amy Winehouse, has voiced his support for the forthcoming biopic on his daughter’s life.
The casting of Marisa Abela, who will play Winehouse in Back to Black, has been criticised by fans who claim the actor looks nothing like the late musician.
Filming of the biopic commenced on 16 January, in London, with photographs surfacing on social media showing Abela in action. Critics quickly pointed out their disappointment with the casting of Abela.
However, Mitch has publicly supported the casting, telling US website TMZ: “Marisa’s a great choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like Amy.”
Industry actor Abela will play the late singer in the biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is best known for directing the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Piers Morgan is not one to hold back when voicing his opinions.
The broadcaster made some controversial comments about Madonna on “TalkTV” on Wednesday while he was chatting to fellow British TV host Jeremy Kyle.
Morgan said, “I have a view that Madonna has now become the most grotesque, trainwreck embarrassment in the history of world entertainment.”
In response to Madonna’s recently-announced 40th-anniversary “Celebration Tour”, Morgan said he’d be playing a “greatest hits” clip of her “most cringe-making moments,” referencing some of her saucy snaps.
Morgan insisted, “She’s too old,” and said she shouldn’t be sharing such things.
He went on, “It’s all over… I’ll be debating that.”

Piers Morgan has been blasted by critics for “misogynistic” remarks he expressed about Madonna, ahead of her 40th anniversary world tour.
On Wednesday’s instalment of the broadcaster’s TalkTV chat show Piers Morgan Uncensored (18 January), Morgan, 57, claimed that the “Vogue” singer, 64, should be “put out to pasture” while calling her a “hot mess”.
He went on to criticise the way in which the musician announced Madonna: The Celebration Tour, the recently announced world tour that will visit 35 cities across the globe.
The singer announced the news in a video starring famous friends including Diplo, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, and Amy Schumer with a nod to her 1991 film Truth or Dare.
Morgan criticised the artist for her clothing choices and creative expression, citing her age.
He accused Madonna of “the whole trying to be a sex kitten thing when you’re in your sixties”.

Jeremy Kyle is to deputize for Piers Morgan on Morgan’s Talk TV show Uncensored over the summer.
Kyle’s Talk Radio show is simulcast on Talk TV during the days and he also hosts opinion show The Talk with Sharon Osbourne, meaning his face will dominate much of the Rupert Murdoch-backed network’s summer coverage.
Kyle will take over from Morgan on flagship Uncensored for a five-week period up to September 5 while Morgan films a new series of his true crime documentary and “takes a well-earned vacation,” according to Talk TV.
Kyle is now a major presence on Talk TV, three years on from a Jeremy Kyle Show contestant committing suicide, leading to the cancellation of that show and an enormous reckoning regarding the British TV industry’s treatment of contestants and duty of care measures.

If you didn’t already know it, Jeremy Kyle is a horrible man. If you weren’t sure, there’s a two part documentary on All4 called Jeremy Kyle Show: Death on Daytime that details this and makes it abundantly clear that the show he fronted for 14 years took a negative toll on many of the thousands of guests it ushered onto the stage only to bully, badger and beat them down. These were people that were almost always vulnerable and at the bottom end of the economic spectrum, and almost always had serious problems, often related to family, relationships, finance and drug and alcohol abuse. The show was canceled after one of his guests, Steve Dymond, took his own life days after filming an episode of the show.

The undoing of a group of ‘bad Samaritans’ has none of the ghoulish fun you might expect from the maker of Final Destination
There was something almost camp about death in the Final Destination series, the invisible hand that toyed with us as it liquidated its characters. Franchise originator Jeffrey Reddick tries to recapture that high-concept magic in his directorial debut Don’t Look Back, also about a lethal force stalking a group bound by calamity. But here he bleaches it of humour and adds a nagging moralistic component – possibly with an eye on the faith-movie market.
This time, karma is the invisible antagonist stalking six “bad Samaritans”, who fail to intervene – one committing the cardinal sin and whipping out his smartphone instead – when a local philanthropist gets beaten up at the park. But for Caitlin (Kourtney Bell) her paralysis has personal reasons: it triggers flashbacks to the recent home...

She might be best described as Jeremy Kyle Mrs Doubtfire, but I predict Glenn Close’s character will be your next style icon. Here are her looks from the trailer – ranked!
On the surface, Hillbilly Elegy doesn’t appear to have a tremendous amount going for it. It’s the story of Amy Adams crying and smoking with a bad haircut, as if she’s run out of ways to convince people to give her an Oscar and is just trying anything now. It looks less like a film and more like a compilation tape of scenes where two wet-eyed people attempt to out-shout each other in different locations. Its trailer is soundtracked by the sort of faux-inspirational music that anonymous multinationals use to soundtrack shale gas hub commercials on news channels that are only ever watched in hotels.
However, you will watch Hillbilly Elegy, and you will watch it for one reason.

This article contains spoilers for Stardew Valley.
I haven't played videogames since I owned a Sega Mega Drive back in the 90s. Somewhere along the line, I transformed from a sweaty, nervous 6 year old failing to stop Sonic drowning in Chemical Plant Zone, to a sweaty, nervous thirty-something failing to do anything ever. With Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel has once again flipped the tempo of their long-running superhero saga by recruiting someone not known for world-saving action epics. It’s yet-another smart move from the studio giant, especially if all those glowing early reactions are anything to go by. Asgard’s family drama may have reached Jeremy Kyle-like proportions but through the lens of Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi and his kitchen-sink adlib comedic style, the whole thing feels fresher than ever. It’s a small tweak to the formula and undeniably a bit of a gamble but looking back at the ups and downs of the superhero movie perhaps it’s a sign of something far more important. Could comedy be the secret ingredient behind the longevity of the entire genre?
It’s far from an unbelievable thought. Laughs certainly have had their place within the world of capes and tights, providing a...

It’s two weddings and no funerals in the latest episode of The Last Kingdom. Spoilers ahead…
This review contains spoilers.
See related Line Of Duty series 4 episode 5 review Line Of Duty series 4, and the clues hiding in series 1 Line Of Duty: creator Jed Mercurio interview
Episode six may have started out peacefully with our hero and his lady enjoying an early morning skinny dip on their Winchester mini-break, but it ended in terror and violence.
Aethelflaed learned the hard way that not all men were like her father and wound up facing capture by bloodthirsty Danes, doubtless to be used as a bargaining chip in the battle for England. It’s hard to know where she’ll be worse off—as the prisoner of Northmen or in her marriage to a brute.
Before the wedding night, Aethelred seemed like little more than a spoiled pretty boy with tickets on himself.

At pains to prove that it isn’t your grandma’s period drama, Taboo delivers its most compelling but problematic episode yet…
This review contains spoilers.
So, the rumours were all true. Not only is James Delaney an invincible cannibal warrior, he’s also a legit wizard. After three episodes of dancing around it, Taboo took a two-footed leap into the supernatural realm this week by showing Delaney rape his sleeping sister via the astral plane. Zilpha being shown to have enjoyed James “breaking in” would ordinarily be the point I’d tell a TV show to do one, but as I’m here until the bitter end, let’s get into it.
To take a charitable approach, Taboo could be seen to be travelling a well-worn route in colonial fiction by showing Zilpha’s body to be contested territory. She is Nootka Sound, property over which...

5.15 Skin Deep
So beauty’s just skin-deep? Age is just a number? Yeah, right. This week we were treated to the creepy, Wesen version of Extreme Makeover, where those obsessed with youth and beauty will seemingly pay any price to maintain their looks.
Here, a local photographer scouts young, beautiful and naive victims at the local mall, showering them in flattery and promises of a successful modelling career. Fittingly, his true form shows him to be a Predator-like Wesen that uses its oversized mandibles to pierce the face of its victims and suck the youth out of them.

When things go wrong on a cinema trip, from bad customer service, noisy audiences, to, er, 'other things'...
As part of our survey on the behaviour of audiences in British cinemas, and how well cinema chains respond to it, we asked a couple of open questions. In this post, we're looking at where we asked for specific examples of good or bad behaviour and practice you've experienced from your cinema visits. Jeremy Kyle's estranged wife has blamed the TV presenter for the breakdown of their marriage. The 50-year-old presenter announced in September that his marriage to Carla Germaine, 40, was over amid rumours of her being unfaithful - but the ex-model has filed for divorce, claiming Jeremy's bad behaviour was to blame. A source said Carla was particularly furious about a row at Windsor Races, telling The Sun on Sunday newspaper: ''Apparently Jeremy had been drinking and badly embarrassed her.'' The duo - who have children Alice, 12, Ava, nine, and Henry, six - were married for 13 years and hope their divorce will...

Who knew Jeremy Kyle was such a gangster? The presenter showed his 'hip' side recently by attempting a 'street' handshake on his show.
Kyle welcomed a guest rapper with the handshake earlier today (October 22), and it's got us freaking out a bit.
But that's not all - Kyle's guest also treated viewers to a special rap, written especially for the show.
The rap included the bars: "We got Jeremy here, I got the Kyle on me, and don't forget to watch the show 'cos it's on ITV."
Kyle hasn't proved too popular of late, with both 5 Seconds of Summer and Danny Dyer criticising the presenter recently.
Meanwhile, it was announced earlier this year that Kyle has split from his second wife Carla Germaine after 13 years of marriage.

The cliches are back in force in this week's episode of Heroes Reborn, which lacks the action and spectacle of the last instalment...
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 The Needs Of The Many
Heroes Reborn has done an admirable job thus far of avoiding the clichéd and corny dialogue that can often plague the superhero genre, but in this week’s episode, those familiar tropes were back in force. Joey Falco’s script featured Teleport Tom delivering the standard ‘ever feel you were born to do something greater?’ spiel that I’m surprised hasn’t already been copyrighted by Marvel, Carlos spouting a typically masculine “we’ll just have to get him first” quip as he strides off to battle and Malina took a cue from Return Of The King’s Éowyn as she asserted, quite accurately, that she is not a “grown man”. The legend that is Jeremy Kyle has been gracing our screes for the past ten years and it’s been a joyous yet soul destroying decade. But it’s always the highlight of your day when you finally get a chance to watch this glorious hour of mid morning television. You’re not entirely sure where the contestants come from or how they even manage to get through their day without accidentally setting everything they own on fire, but you can’t find the power inside yourself to change the channel.
Maybe that’s a little bit harsh, but you when read some of the tag lines on the show and listen to some of the things that they come out with, you know that it was so worth calling in sick for.
Oh and in case you were wondering…

It was only ever meant to be a temporary stop-gap while Trisha was off-air, but fast-forward 10 years and The Jeremy Kyle Show remains a staple of ITV's daytime schedule.
Say the name 'Jeremy Kyle' to most people and they'll probably look back at you with some sense of disgust, a feeling which grows stronger when you try and explain that it's actually brilliant television. Yes, technically it's awful, but that doesn't stop it being bizarrely great.
The show is a strange relic of daytime TV. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, chatshows like Kilroy, Trisha, The Jerry Springer Show and Ricki Lake were all the rage in Britain, but nowadays Kyle easily rules the roost. So much so in fact that no-one really bothers to try and emulate him.

Jeremy Kyle is to host a new daytime series on ITV.
The talk show host will discuss medical complaints with guests in his studio on The Emergency Room each afternoon.
The show has been described as a cross between The Jeremy Kyle Show and Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.
He will work alongside doctors and nurses in hospital wards who are treating patients with STIs, embarrassing rashes and other ailments.
Kyle's popular daytime show has become infamous for its daily use of lie detector and DNA tests.
ITV has sent a call out for people aged 16 or above to feature on the show.
Last year, the former radio DJ hosted ITV evening show The Kyle Files, which at one point saw him get pepper sprayed by a club bouncer.

Security guards - who believed they were interviewing for a new personal minder role with the daytime TV presenter - were the unsuspecting audience for the light entertainment show's latest hidden camera prank.
One applicant is seen trying to fend off the angry bystander - who is also receiving instructions from Ant & Dec - in the clip above.
Ant & Dec tested one unsuspecting minder's mettle by ordering Kyle to ask him for a piggyback and DNA swabs as part of the unorthodox application process.
The applicants were also set the challenge of dealing with the paparazzi - played by the 2015 Brit Awards hosts.

Did anyone ever wonder why Americans gave us Brits such a hard time for having bad teeth?
We certainly did, until that is we flicked on The Jeremy Kyle Show one morning and saw a dental disaster that made it all clear.
Gemma Swift appeared on the show earlier this year, but it wasn't her 'stop harassing me just because I'm sleeping with your ex' story that got viewers talking - it was her teeth.
ITV has now stumped up £10,000 to have them straightened, according to The Mirror.
The broadcaster also filmed the procedure, which will air on Thursday's (March 5) edition of The Jeremy Kyle Show.
The clip capturing the moment Jeremy Kyle was pepper-sprayed by a bouncer in Magaluf was recently unveiled.
The presenter was accosted while filming an episode of The Kyle Files last summer. Watch below:...

Kris Jenner not knowing which way is up, Dermot O'Leary propped on Amanda Holden's knee and the entirety of Danny Dyer's speech - there were definitely a lot of funny and bizarre moments during last night's National Television Awards.
And Digital Spy had front row (well, near enough) seats to both the ceremony and afterparty - so here's 20 things that you wouldn't have seen on TV last night.
National Television Awards 2015 as it happened: Live blog
NTAs 2015: Best reactions to 'Georgie Shore', David Tennant and more
1. We were seated in the first row, outside of the red-carpeted pen that was holding all the celebs at the front. Sat next to us were some of the Geordie (or should that be Georgie, Kris Jenner?) Shore lads and lasses that didn't quite make the cut into being classed as proper celebrities. Marnie Simpson, along with newbies Chloe November and Nathan Henry,...

The clip capturing the moment Jeremy Kyle was pepper-sprayed by a bouncer in Magaluf has been unveiled.
The presenter was accosted while filming an episode of The Kyle Files last summer.
Kyle was investigating the harmful effects of drinking in the Majorcan resort when he was sprayed. He can be seen being hurried away by security after the incident.
He says: "Walking down the street I think somebody sprayed pepper spray - it's serious. Throat, eyes, coughing.
"We came here to talk about a drinking culture - lots of kids seemingly having fun. You get pepper spray sprayed in your face, just walking down the street. Okay, is that the camera? Is that because we're trying to find out what it's really like or does that happen every night If you get into an argument?"
The 'Young Drinkers' instalment of The Kyle Files airs tonight (January 22) at 7.30pm on ITV.
