Solstice Studios is partnering with Fast and Furious producers Original Film on the original action thriller Shadow Run by Magnum P.I. and upcoming Cliffhanger reboot scribe Joe Gazzam.
Shadow Run tells the story of a CIA agent who devoted five years of his life to capturing the Russian spy who killed his wife. His triumph turns into a nightmare when he’s told that, not only is America trading the spy away – but he’s been assigned to make the swap. Now he’s stuck with his mortal enemy on an off-the-books “shadow run” where nothing happens as planned and everyone is trying to kill them.
Original’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing, with Solstice Studios’ SVP of Development and Production Beth Bruckner O’Brien and Creative Executive Leah Bleich overseeing the project. Solstice will finance and distribute the film in the U.S. and handle foreign sales.

Updated With Full List Of Scripts, Writers, And Reps: Catherine The Great, about the rise and life of the famous (sometimes notorious) 18th-Century Russian monarch, was the top vote-getter among 70 scripts chosen for the 2014 Black List of the year’s best un-produced scripts. The screenplay, by Los Angeles writer and producer Kristina Lauren Anderson, was announced as part of an hour-plus process on Twitter and YouTube this morning.
Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.

Sony Pictures has hired Brad Anderson to direct a new action thriller called Shadow Run. I’m a big fan of Anderson’s past work, which includes The Machinist, Session 9, and Transsiberian. The guy is a talented filmmaker who is good with the characters and stories he tells. He has also worked on TV series such as The Wire, Fringe, Boardwalk Empire, and The Killing.
Shadow Run comes from a spec script by Joe Gazzam. The story begins when "a viral attack puts lives in danger, forcing a CIA agent to enact a secret prisoner exchange: Russia’s most notorious spy for the American scientist who can create a cure.”
Anderson recently helmed The Call, which starred Halle Berry, as well as last month’s Stonehearst Asylum, starring Kate Beckinsale. I’m looking forward to seeing how this new project of his pans out. I think Marvel needs to...

Jason Reitman is in desperate need of a career bump. His last two films, Labor Day and Men, Women, and Children, felt like they were made my someone who did not know why he was making them. This is shame coming from the guy who made Up in the Air, which I rewatched recently and is still vibrant and specific. Thankfully, Reitman will be stepping back into dramedy territory with I Would Only Rob Banks for My Family, based on a rather unusual Texas Monthly article. The story follows a Texas family who pull off two rather impressive bank heists. Nick Hornby (An Education, Wild) will come on to pen the screenplay. Jason's poppa Ivan Reitman will produce the film. The two have not worked together since Up in the Air, so hopefully, they can create that same magic once again with this film. Reitman is in need of some quality.

The Machinist helmer Brad Anderson has signed on to direct Shadow Run, a mysterious actioner that is being broadly described as “Safe House on a plane.”
The project emerged first as a spec script by Joe Gazzam, which became the object of a financial tug of war between studios last February. Michael De Luca and Andrea Giannetti have been tasked with handling the film for Sony, and they’ll work alongside producers Neal H. Moritz and Hernany Perla.
Plot details are scarce at the moment, but Anderson’s involvement indicates that the script impressed the well-respected director. His past projects include Halle Berry thriller The Call, star-studded period mystery-thriller Stonehearst Asylum and episodes of acclaimed series like The Killing, Boardwalk Empire, Fringe, The Wire and Treme.
No casting has yet been announced, though Sony will likely be searching for a bankable, already established action star who can carry the pic.

“The Machinist” director Brad Anderson has signed up to helm Sony’s “Bourne-esque spy tale” (aren’t they all?) “Shadow Run,” according to Deadline. The script, written by “Cliffhanger” writer Joe Gazzam, was the subject a frenzied bidding war earlier this year and is being kept under tight wraps with no plot details revealed yet. Truth be told, an action thriller isn’t too much of a stretch for Anderson’s sensibilities, since his filmography has trended towards genre fare with films like “Session 9” and “Vanishing on 7th Street.” If anything, at least “Shadow Run” has a bigger potential to actually reach audiences, as opposed to his latest output, “Stonehearst Asylum,” which saw release last month unbeknownst to anyone. Here’s hoping the next one washes away the stink of Anderson’s Halle Berry-starring “The Call.” Jon M. Chu, who has made dance ("Step Up 2: The Streets...

Riddick helmer David Twohy is heading back to the sci-fi landscape, as Deadline reports he’s in the crosshairs for Relativity’s Replay. The studio purchased the then-untitled screenplay back in July from writer Joe Gazzam, and it’s gone through some stages in development since then as it has also landed a title.
The story follows a man called Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who’s sent four days into the future. Upon arrival he discovers his son has been killed and he’s being blamed for the murder. When that day ends, he’s taken back one day prior. When he realizes time is jumping backwards one day at a time, he vows to solve the mystery of his son’s death from happening on the day of the initial experiment.
It might sound a little confusing, but damn if it hasn’t got me excited.

Though Sylvester Stallone hasn’t been doing too hot at the box office lately (his last stand-alone, 2013′s Bullet to the Head, made a pathetic $4,458,201 in its opening weekend and never even came close to recouping its budget), no one can deny that some of his movies rank among the finest and most iconic action flicks of all time. In particular, his rock-climbing thriller Cliffhanger is rightly thought of as an action classic. And though Sly himself may be sliding, Cliffhanger is ready for a new lease on life, with news that the film is getting the reboot treatment.
Deadline reports that Fast and Furious producer Neal Moritz is pushing for a remake of Cliffhanger over at StudioCanal and has in fact already locked in a writer. Joe Gazzam got the gig after making a pitch to Moritz and StudioCanal about his ideas for breathing new life into the action classic.

Sylvester Stallone's wonderfully terrible 1993 action thriller Cliffhanger is getting the remake treatment. It's kind of been gestating for awhile with producer Neal Moritz and Studio Canal, but they are ready to actually move it into production. They’ve hired Joe Gazzam to write the screenplay after he pitched his take on the movie. They obviously liked the direction he wanted to take the story.
The original Renny Harlin-directed mountain climbing film focused on a traumatized mountain climber, who is forced back into an expedition after a plane crash leaves a lot of stolen cash and bad guys scattered across the Rocky Mountains.

Okay, guys, the jig is up. You're just picking random movies out of a box to remake, aren't you? And that box is a box of DVDs at a WalMart, home to popular movies that no one really cares about, and one of them is Cliffhanger. Cliffhanger, probably the ninth or tenth most beloved Sylvester Stallone film, is up for a redo, because Cliffhanger is somehow a marketable title that brings back memories of an unforgettable theatrical experience. And now, the new Cliffhanger has a writer, which suggests some strong forward momentum on the project. Hold on tight. Don't look down. Deadline reports that Joe Gazzam, a terrific magician's name, is onboard to script the redo. Gazzam has no official writing credits to his name aside from the spec script Shadow Run, but apparently he made a pitch for the remake that trumped any other ideas from competing screenwriters. Yesterday, Deadline broke the news that Renny Harlin‘s 1993 minor classic, Cliffhanger, would be getting the reboot/remake/reimagining treatment, and while it’s not surprising that the Sylvester Stallone-starring mayhem on the mountain thriller is getting a new take, it is disheartening. Remakes in general tend to feel tired, but the apparent process that went into rebooting the film sounds straight up depressing — the outlet reports that newbie screenwriter Joe Gazzam, who will pen this new feature, snagged the gig when he “was among a group of screenwriters who pitched their take on a movie that still holds up as a guilty pleasure.” You read that correctly. At some point during the last few months, a group of Hollywood screenwriters (most likely up-and-comers like Gazzam, who at least has some original scripts in the tank) was tasked with thinking up ways to reboot Cliffhanger, and Gazzam turned in the best one. The film doesn't have have a studio home, but Original Film is stationed in Sony Pictures, so they'll probably get the first chance to pick it up. Funnily enough, TriStar, the banner that was just revived by former Fox head Tom Rothman, distributed the film back in the 90s,...

StudioCanal and producer Neal Moritz (I Am Legend, Fast Five, 21 Jump Street) have teamed to remake Sylvester Stalone's 1993 "Cliffhanger" thriller, which revolved around a traumatized mountain climber forced back into an expedition after a plane crash leaves a lot of stolen cash and bad guys on the Rocky Mountains. Many writers pitched ideas for the remake, but in the end, Joe Gazzam's version was the one that Moritz liked. As a result, Gazzam is now working on the script. A director has yet to be hired. "Cliffhanger" cost $70 million to make and grossed $255 million worldwide. It was the film that resurrected Stallone's career after several box office bombs and a bad reputation for being difficult on set. In fact, the actor begged director Renny Harlin for the job. Harlin eventually gave it to him, but only after Stallone agreed to listen to him all the time and get him coffee when he wants it.

There had been rumours, but a big screen remake of Renny Harlin’s 1993 movie (which starred Sylvester Stallone) is now moving ahead at StudioCanal with Neal Moritz set to produce.
After meeting with a number of screenwriters who pitched their take on a new interpretation, it was relative unknown Joe Gazzam who was picked to write the screenplay.
Sony will likely distribute the movie, despite the fact that they have a far more interesting sounding mountain climbing project already in the works. Everest will be directed by Doug Liman, with Tom Hardy attached to play Sir Edward Mallory, the British mountaineer who tried to be first to summit the world’s highest mountain.
That’s not the only movie called Everest in the works, with Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes all starring in the Baltasar Kormakur helmed film about a disastrous attempt to summit...

First announced at Cannes five years ago, it's taken producer Neal Moritz until now to find the first screenwriter for his Cliffhanger remake. You can all screw up your application forms, however, because the vacancy has been filled. Sculpting a new take on the '90s Sylvester Stallone classic will be hotly-tipped newbie Joe Gazzam.Renny Harlin's original Cliffhanger proved that the Die Hard formula needn’t necessarily be restricted to claustrophobic indoor settings, plonking mountain-rescue boy Stallone on the side of a snowy peak. Sly's Gabe Walker was reluctantly trying to foil John Lithgow’s plan to recover $100m stolen from the Us treasury and deposited in the Rockies after a mid-air transfer went somewhat awry. There were deaths by gun, gravity, drowning and stalactite. And it wasn't all snow: there were caves too. As a bonus, Lithgow played the villainous ex-us Military Intelligence officer Qualen with a hilariously plummy British accent.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that all great ’80s and ’90s action movies are going to get remade someday. Following Robocop, Total Recall and just about everything else you used to love years ago, Sylvester Stallone’s classic 1993 mountain-top actioner Cliffhanger is getting a remake. Fast & Furious franchise producer Neal Moritz has hired Joe Gazzam to rewrite the script, presumably keeping the basics intact: a hotshot rescue ranger gets mixed up in a botched heist – with all the action played out on the wobbly ledges and...

Sylvester Stallone and Renny Harlin's Cliffhanger is still getting a reboot, and a new writer has been found...
News
Ah, we thought this one had died a death. It's been three or four years since news first landed that a reboot of Cliffhanger was on the way. The original 1993 movie proved to be a comeback hit for Sylvester Stallone, with Renny Harlin directing, and for a while there were plans for a sequel to it.
Those plans never materialised, and back in 2009 producer Neal Moritz - the founder of the firm Original Film, overseeing remakes of Total Recall and 21 Jump Street - was said to be overseeing a reboot instead. That reboot would focus on younger climbers going up big mountains.
Now we learn that Joe Gazzam has been hired to pen the screenplay to the new Cliffhanger, which suggests to us that it's an active project again. Gazzam...

I’m kidding. No one asked for this.
Studio Canal and producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious) are moving forward with a Cliffhanger remake Deadline says. The 1993 action movie made $250 million worldwide over 20 years ago, so it’s odd that they are just doing this now.
In the original movie Sylvester Stallone starred as mountain climber/ranger who is taken by thieves to help recover three lost briefcases carrying $100 million in the Rocky Mountains. Joe Gazzam (xXx, S.W.A.T.) has been hired to write the script for the remake after impressing Moritz with his idea for the new movie. What idea could that have been? Was it to save a lot of money using CG instead of practical stunts?
Or maybe his idea was to cast Jim Carrey and expand on this scene here:...

Big day for reboots. First it was Cliffhanger, and now MGM and Warner Bros. announced they are teaming with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to create a re-imagined trilogy based on the sci-fi hit Stargate, one of the biggest titles in the MGM library. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original 1994 film with Devlin, is on board to direct this one, with Devlin producing. Those two are already hard at work on a new version of Independence Day at Fox. Related: Climb Toward ‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot Moving Forward; Joe Gazzam Set To Write MGM’s Gary Barber called Emmerich and Devlin “world-class creators of the original Stargate,” and said they will “bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.” Said Emmerich and Devlin: “The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy.

Hey, remember that Sylvester Stallone mountaineering action movie you kinda liked when you were eleven? They're totally remaking that. Screenwriter Joe Gazzam has been hired to pen the script for "Cliffhanger," a "reimagining" of the 1993 Sylvester Stallone film about a haunted mountain climber who gets caught up in a deadly heist, according to Deadline. Stallone doesn't appear to be involved in the new version, which was first announced back in 2009 before stalling out for a time. Producer Neal H. Moritz ("Fast & Furious") is on board to produce for StudioCanal. Directed by Renny Harlin and co-starring Janine Turner, John Lithgow and Michael Rooker, "Cliffhanger" brought in more than $250 million worldwide. The film was nominated for three technical Oscars including Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing. What do you think of the idea of a "Cliffhanger" remake? Exclusive: Producer Neal Moritz and StudioCanal are ready to move forward with Cliffhanger, a re-imagining of the 1993 Renny Harlin-directed mountain climbing film that starred Sylvester Stallone. They’ve set Joe Gazzam to write the screenplay after he was among a group of screenwriters who pitched their take on a movie that still holds up as a guilty pleasure. The original was made by Carolco before that company crashed, and TriStar distributed it. StudioCanal ended up with the rights. There is no domestic distributor in place, but since Moritz’s Original Pictures is Sony-based, that studio should get a first crack at the project. Sony already has a mountain climbing project in Everest, the Doug Liman-directed film that has Tom Hardy attached to play Sir Edward Mallory, the British mountaineer who tried to be first to summit the world’s highest mountain. From SneakPeekTV, take a look @ the full feature of producer Dino De Laurentis' sci-fi sex comedy "Barbarella"(1968) that is being developed and rebooted by "Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn.
From a screenplay by Joe Gazzam, Refn promises the look of his film will adhere close to the languid illustrations of Jean-Claude Forest, creator of the French-language "Barbarella" comics.
The original Paramount Pictures release was directed by Roger Vadim, starring Vadim's wife at the time, actress Jane Fonda :
"...in the year 40,000, 'Barbarella' (Fonda) is assigned by the 'President of Earth' (Claude Dauphin) to retrieve 'Doctor Durand Durand' (Milo O'Shea) from the planet 'Tau Ceti'.
"Durand Durand is the inventor of the weaponized 'Positronic Ray'.
"Earth is now a peaceful planet, and weapons are unheard of. Because Tau Ceti is an unknown region of space there is the potential for the weapon to fall into the wrong hands.

Whenever a movie studio announces plans for another remake, the reaction among fans and pundits is always the same: Hollywood doesn't have any new ideas.
But we like to look on the bright side of things, which is why we're so happy when we hear of a cool remake or reboot. Hey, who needs new ideas when there are already so many great old ideas waiting to be rediscovered?
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of 50 — that's right, 50! — upcoming Hollywood remakes that tickle our fancy. Because if these films were good the first time, you never know, you might just enjoy them even more the second time around.

While his dream of directing a "Wonder Woman" movie remains just that, it looks like Nicolas Winding Refn will get to exercise his female fantasy hero kicks through another outlet, taking on an equally iconic character.
Deadline reports Gaumont and producer Martha De Laurentiis are bringing the iconic hero "Barbarella" -- who first appeared in the Jean-Claude Forest graphic novel and was memorably played by Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim's big screen adaptation -- to the small screen with Refn to direct and executive produce. And well, that's about it at the moment. But it appears this will be pitched as a new series, so we can only guess that once the pilot is out of the way, Refn's involvement will be at the producer level only. That said, his input can only help make this a cut above, and hopefully succeed where NBC's sad "Wonder Woman" miserably failed.

Disney is developing a new action adventure film that's set in the great state of Hawaii. The studio has hired screenwriter Joe Gazzam to take a crack at the script. The movie is described as being in the same vein of Indiana Jones, and the story is said to include, "some supernatural elements and revolves around a gauntlet sent down from gods taken from Polynesian mythology."
This could be a very cool movie. There's a ton of great Hawaiian mythology to play around with, and it will be interesting to see how this movie turns out. To give you an idea of what we might expect, Gazzam has also written 21 Jump Street, Barbarella and Step Up Revolution. He's also set to write a big screen adaptation of a TV series called It Takes a Thief for Universal pictures, and Will Smith is apparently interested in starring in it.

Some screenwriting news has hit from Variety, who report that Disney’s hired Joe Gazzam to write what, right now, is only described as “an untitled family adventure set in Hawaii.” Though not a known name, Gazzam has reportedly done some rewrite work on 21 Jump Street and Step Up 4, while another script, It Takes a Thief, is moving forward with Universal. Needless to say, a successful stint here could do some pretty good things for his career. Monsterfoot Productions and Scott Sanders Productions will throw their support behind the film.
