One of the best films to play the festivals, including Fantasia, last year was Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen’s home invasion film For the Sake of Vicious. So when I started hearing a similar buzz about Baby Money, directed by Luc Walpoth and Mikhael Bassilli and co-written by Bassilli and Mj Palo, I saw some similarities and decided to check it out.
Minny and Gil are about to become parents. They’re also out of money and out of options. Desperate for cash they join Tony and Dom in what should be an easy bit of burglary. The three men go in, grab the loot and Minny does the driving.
Instead, it turns into a shootout leaving multiple fatalities and Dom and...

Arriving on digital platforms today is For the Sake of Vicious, a gnarly and tense home invasion thriller from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen that lives up to its memorable name (this writer highly recommends checking it out). Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with the directing duo of the film, and they discussed how the project was initially borne out of their own anger and frustrations, their experiences collaborating with their core actors—Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, and Colin Paradine—as well as the challenges they faced during their ambitious and intimate shoot.
Great to speak with you both today. Something that I really appreciated about this film is that it is very cinematic, and yet there's something about it that almost feels like it could be a stage play, because of how intimate the filmmaking feels and all the different storytelling elements at play. I'd...

Actress Lora Burke has been on something of a roll when it comes to genre films – she was astonishing in 2017s Poor Agnes, amazing in 2018s Lifechanger and now she’s back with For the Sake of Vicious, a cross between a home invasion thriller and the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct 13.
Set on Halloween (when else?) For the Sake of Vicious opens with kindhearted nurse Romina (Lora Burke), after a long shift at the hospital, coming home and finding a hostage in her house! Chris (Nick Smyth) is demanding justice for a wrongdoing from his past, he’s angry, desperate, and has nothing left to lose. He’s owed a debt of blood and will not be...

Blood spills, kneecaps shatter and excitement dwindles during a thriller that fails to build on a taut opening act
Ultraviolence is too often seen as a cinematic end in itself – but the results are often ugly, boring, or both. This Canadian home-invasion thriller falls into this trap, so ferociously focused on the scent of blood that it double-kneecaps one character not once but twice: by hammer, then by gunshot. But given that co-director Gabriel Carrer’s past credits include Kill, The Demolisher, and Death on Scenic Drive, we probably shouldn’t be expecting The Bridges of Madison County here.
Related: Does Lars von Trier’s ‘vomitive’ new film spell the end for provocative cinema?...

We can tell it's been a long day when Romina (Lora Burke) gets home from the hospital where she works. All she wants to do is settle down with her son, who is being looked after elsewhere, and have a peaceful evening, but she's barely through the door before she realises that there's something very, very wrong. There's a man lying on the floor bleeding and crying out in pain. Then the perpetrator appears, seizing her to stifle her panic, and he's somebody she knows.
It's going to be a long night.
The set-up for Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen's latest film is fairly simple. Chris (Nick Smyth) has injured Alan (Colin Paradine), and wants Romina to keep him alive until he can finish extracting information. Whilst this goes strongly against Romina's instincts as a health and care professional (and human being), she can't bring herself to condemn Chris because she knows.

*full disclosure: access to the online Fantasia Film Festival was provided by the fine folks at the festival. Directors/writers: Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen. Cast: Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, Colin Paradine and T.J. Kennedy. For the Sake of Vicious had its World Premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival. A Canadian film, from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer (The Demolisher) and Reese Eveneshen (Defective), this indie title brings a biker gang into a tiny kitchen for a vigilante beatdown. Carrer's synth' score helps amplify some of the film's tension. Meanwhile, the pacing only takes off near the final half hour. In the meantime, the film's topic is a bit dire and early scenes are constrained by the simple setting. For the Sake of Vicious will entertain a few patient indie thriller fans out there. The story could have used a bit more meat on the bone. However, the film is centered...

As well as consistently coming up with content that pushes artistic boundaries, the Fantasia International Film Festival has a knack for finding films that go to extremes. Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen’s For The Sake Of Vicious is set mostly in a single location, with just a few actors, but packs in a plot that’s twistier than you might expect and a second half filled with unrelenting violence. It’s the kind of film that will leave you physically shaken, as if you’ve been in a fight yourself. At a roundtable I attended with the directors, they were asked how the story developed.
“The first conception of it was, there is people trapped in a house, essentially, but it was in the mid hot summer during a blackout,” says Gabriel. “And this study was more of how people...

The second wave of titles for this year's virtual edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival were announced an hour ago. As expected there is a tonne of genre goodness coming to our screens at the end of August. First we need to start with a bit of hometown pride. There are a number of Canadian titles having their world premieres during the festival. Bleed With Me from Amelia Moses, For The Sake of Vicious from Gabriel Carrer & Reese Eveneshen, The Oak Room from Cody Calahan and Slaxx from Elza Kephart. Kephart's film was presented during the Frontieres Coproduction Market in Montreal. It's always nice to see successful projects return to where it wall began. The U.S. may be on figurative fire...

Gabriel Carrer (The Demolisher and In The House of Flies) is prepping to release his next film Death on Scenic Drive in the coming months and he has given ScreenAnarchy a brand new trailer to share with our community. Giving us a trailer cut to an ominous narrator I have dubbed it the throwback trailer. It is a bit more elusive to pin down what exactly Death on Scenic Drive is about from watching it. Were it not for the accompanying release below it would stand as a nice mood piece which introduces us to Larissa, the girl who becomes Death. Alas, from reading through the release we get a sense that things are not going to end well for many a good people...

"When he finds you... run." Those words of advice are taken to heart by a woman being pursued by the titular character in our exclusive clip from The Demolisher, which comes out on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD today from Mpi Media Group.
Press Release: New York, NY (September 2, 2016)- Like the stylistically brutal films of Nicolas Winding Refn, The Demolisher, from Canadian director Gabriel Carrer, is an unapologetic portrayal of what can happen when a fragile mind is pushed too far. Winner of the 2015 Fantasia Film Festival's Silver Audience Award, this "powerful jolting entry in the vigilante genre" (Bloody-Disgusting) will be available on Digital HD and Blu-ray/DVD starting October 4, 2016.
The Demolisher stars Ry Barrett (Kingdom Come, Ejecta), Tianna Nori (Bite), Jessica Vano (Crackerhead), and Duncan McLellan ("Arrow"). Along with Carrer and Barrett, the film's producers include Christian Burgess, Andrew Bussey, Martin Buzora, Duane Frey, and Angus McLellan, who also served as editor.

If you thought last year's revenge thriller The Demolisher packed an emotional gut punch, Gabriel Carrer has a message for you: You ain't seen nothing yet. Speaking to me about his next film, the intriguingly titled Ventablvck, the director was very clear he was planning to go to even further to explore how dark the human soul can get. "This film will be a violent attack on the people who didn’t like The Demolisher," said Carrer when I asked what to expect from the film. "This film is about a man and a woman who choose not to be a part of society. It’s about a man and a woman who thrive in the darkness, who hold themselves back from fighting others, or stand by their actions. It is a fight movie...

We at TwitchFilm are all looking at our calendars and are counting down the days to the Fantasia International Film Festival this July. I am especially looking forward to the Frontières International Co-Production Market. The second wave of market titles was announced today. There is a great mix of seasoned veterans and young filmmakers looking to make their mark in fantastic film with feature film debuts. Filmmakers with feature length films already on their docket include My Bloody Valentine’s George Mihalka, Attack of the Lederhosenzombies’ Dominik Hartl, American Burger’s Bonita Drake & Johan Bromander and Southbound’s Roxanne Benjamin, which is an anthology, I know, but I am still counting it. The Demolisher’s Gabriel Carrer has a new script he would like to share...

One of my favorite films coming out of the 2015 Fantasia International Film Festival was Gabriel Carrer’s surreal vigilante study The Demolisher (our review and behind the scenes look). As a big fan of vigilante cinema, I’m always itching for a new take on what is typically a formulaic genre. The Demolisher is that fresh palette cleanser. Carrer, whose previous […]...

Any one person can be afflicted by a fit of rage. No one is entirely exempt from giving in to one’s emotions, shooing reason to the wayside and letting loose with a spew of vitriol, or worse. Some of pop culture’s most iconic characters are known and beloved precisely for their willingness to let fury get the better of them, most notably the Incredible Hulk and Wolverine. There is a dark side to humanity that can live vicariously through these dangerous beings when they enter apoplectic rage. However, the truth about rage is that it is extremely dangerous if left uncontrolled, leaving both recipient and perpetrators as victims. This is the starting point of writer-director Gabriel Carrer’s semi-revenge story The Demolisher, which premiered at the 2015 Fantasia Film Festival.

The world, as vast as it is, can be a claustrophobic place when you spend all your time in your own head, with only one driving force keeping you going. As much as the trailer for The Demolisher - let alone the title of the film – would lead you to believe that it’s a throwback to the glory days of 70's/80's exploitation and violent revenge flicks like Death Wish, it’s really more of a dark and depressing character study of one man’s downward spiral into madness due to his unquenchable thirst for revenge.

As part of the just announced Fantasia Film Fest Lineup beginning next week, the Canadian thriller The Demolisher is getting its World Premiere at the festival July 27. And before it does, a teaser trailer has been released along with a poster touting all its accolades.
The film comes from the Canadian Gabriel Carrer (If a Tree Falls, Kills), which will make this his fourth film. Here’s the synopsis:
Bruce (Ryan Barrett) is an ordinary repairman tormented by a crippling sense of responsibility for his disabled wife Samantha, an ex-policewoman (Tianna Nori), the survivor of a gang-related assault. Bruce’s increasing hyper-sensitivity to the injustice suffered by his wife steer him down a dark path of vigilantism, and with his rapidly disintegrating mental health, paranoia and overwhelming sense of doom, Bruce channels his inner rage towards a young woman Marie (Jessica Vano) and finds refuge in a world of extreme violence.

We've already been impressed by the first trailer for Canadian writer/director Gabriel Carrer's revenge thriller The Demolisher which is making its debut at Fantasia Film Festival. The first trailer set-up the story of man on the brink of a mental break and the project caught our attention in part for story and in part for its visuals.
The newly released spot is a bit more abstract but focuses even more on the cinematography from Martin Buzora, providing a moody clip which propels this well into must-see territory.

In The Drownsman, now out on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay, Ry Barrett superbly plays the titular antagonist, and we caught up with the actor to discuss the 1980s horror movie villains that influenced his performance, his thoughts on reprising the role, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to chat about The Drownsman. I thought it was a fun and frightening film with a 1980s-esque vibe.
Ry Barrett: It is definitely a throwback to those kinds of movies. That is exactly what drew me to it. I’m staring at a stack of my DVDs right now and they’re full of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Candyman—all those sorts of characters I grew up with and always loved to get freaked out by. The second I heard of the opportunity to play a character like that, I was all over it.
Did any horror movie villains influence your portrayal of Sebastian Donner,...

Canadian writer/director Gabriel Carrer makes his feature debut with The Demolisher, a revenge thriller with a psychological bent. The film is playing at Fantasia fest this year
