- One of his closest friends was Sevilla player Antonio Puerta. They got to know each other back in the days when Sergio also played for Sevilla. Antonio passed away in August 2007 after suffering several cardiac arrests, one in the middle of a game, one after in the change room and ended up in a coma in which he suffered 6 more and then his body gave up. Antonio's wife who was eight months pregnant with their son Aitor was standing on the platform when this happened.
