Before the lights go down in Hollywood’s iconic Pantages theater for Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s North American tour, the ensemble cast struts around the extravagant set in a preview of what’s to come. With a windmill on one side of the stage and a massive elephant on the other, the flamboyant spectacle fits right in at the Pantages’ lavish theater.
“Some shows come into the Pantages, and they look like the show was designed specifically for the Pantages,” says Hollywood Pantages Theater president Jeff Loeb. “I love watching patrons walk into the lobby who have never been there before, slack-jawed at the beauty of the theater itself. It was a full house for the opening night of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s” national tour of the 10-time Tony-winning Broadway extravaganza’s Los Angeles run. The show was stopped shortly after intermission, but for good reason — the audience leapt to their feet for a standing ovation following the mash-up performance of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” Another standing ovation erupted at the curtain call, where bouquets of roses were presented to the entire cast and ensemble.
In this production, Conor Ryan stars as Christian, an American songwriter and poet who moves to Paris in 1899 and finds himself falling in love with Satine (Courtney Reed), the most celebrated performer at the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Austin Durant plays Moulin Rouge owner Harold Zidler.
