Lullaby is the latest film from genre director John R. Leonetti, This time, working from a script by former WWE writer Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell, who also co-wrote The Sand, he’s unleashing the wrath of Lilith on new parents Rachel and John.
As the film opens the couple gets a package of baby things from Rachel’s mother. They belonged to Rachel’s sister Vivian who lost both her baby and her husband under strange circumstances. Why her mother would send them and why they would actually use them is one of life’s great mysteries.
But use them they do, especially a hymn found in an old book which seems to be the only thing that will calm baby Eli down. It’s not long...

Composer Hans Zimmer must be glad that ASCAP’s 2020 Screen Music Awards are virtual, because he’s so busy with upcoming films that he wouldn’t have time to pick up his Top Box Office award for last year’s “The Lion King” anyway.
He is, however, doing a live Q&a Thursday with Mitchell Leib, Disney’s president of music & soundtracks, to commemorate the ASCAP honor. (That live interview takes place at 3:25 p.m. Pt /6:25 Et June 25 at www.ascapexperience.com/; virtually admission is free but registration is required.)
Variety caught up with the Oscar and Grammy winner to talk about why his “Lion King” experience is more relevant than ever, and how it happens that 2020 — despite the pandemic — is turning out to be his busiest year ever
Variety: You have seven movies scheduled to come out this year…
Zimmer: It’s like, I’ve never been busier.

Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell, the writing duo behind Frightfest flick The Sand – which is due for VOD release in the UK from the Frightfest/Icon Film shingle Frightfest Presents on October 19th – have scored second place in the prestigious 2015 ScreenCraft Horror Screenplay Contest behind Scott Hamilton & Pj Hamilton’s script, a werewolf tale entitled Bad Moon Rising.
Beating out over 1,000 other submissions, Greenfield and Powell’s script for Plague Ship tells the story of a newly married couple whose honeymoon becomes a nightmare when a deadly plague breaks out on their luxury cruise ship. The pair must do anything and everything to keep each other safe, both from infection and from the ship’s crew, who have decided that slaughtering passengers is the only way to keep the plague from spreading.
I’ve had a sneak peek at the screenplay and it’s safe to say I was hooked from page one.

After an all-night graduation beach party, a group of hung-over students wake up under blazing sun to find their numbers somewhat depleted. An enormous alien creature has burrowed down deep and anyone foolish enough to make contact with the sand finds themselves at the mercy of a sea of flesh-eating tentacles.
Can you say Blood Beach?
Ok so maybe that’s not fair. After all Jeffrey Bloom’s 1980 fear-flick, despite having a similar premise – something eating people on the beach, dragging them under the sand – is world’s apart from the gory body-horror of Isaac Gabaeff’s film. Whereas that film often played for oddball humour both intentionally and unintentionally, The Sand plays things very straight.

I hear a lot of casual horror fans talking about the lack of quality horror films in recent years... and to some extent they have a point. Studio-funded horror films seem to be less prevalent than they were three decades ago, and many mass-marketed horror films are lighter on gore, nudity, and the like than the features of yesteryear (with the obvious exception of the Evil Dead reboot). But there are still plenty of quality horror films being made – it’s just incumbent upon horror fans to look a little harder. There are a plethora of well-made horror pictures being released every year; they just aren’t all getting the mainstream attention that they deserve. In an attempt to remedy that, and shine the spotlight on some outstanding films that haven’t received a great deal of publicity, we are showcasing five titles from the past five years that may have passed you by,...

Ready, Set, Fund is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
At first glance it might seem rather odd to feature English music icon Phil Collins in this month's column, but Collins has quite a personal connection to Texas history. Due to his interest in the Battle of the Alamo of 1836, his personal collection of artifacts related to the Alamo numbers in the hundreds, and he's narrated at a sound and light show about the Alamo. While on a publicity tour across Texas to promote his new book, The Alamo and Beyond: A Collector's Journey, Collins was interviewed by Texas Filmmakers Production Fund recipient filmmaker Ben Powell about his obscure collection as well as his retirement from music.

Ever wondered how the classic John Hughes film Home Alone would have turned out if Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin McAllister had swapped his toy cars for a sawn-off shotgun?
The answer can be found in violent indie thriller The Aggression Scale, coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay on September 3, 2012.
Described as Home Alone meets Rambo, it sees Owen Rutledge take on a posse of hitmen sent to terrorise his family over an outstanding debt. The gang doesn't know young Owen has an emotionally-disturbed background of violent behaviour.
From up-and-coming genre director Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee, Zombie Transfusion), the film is written by Ben Powell (Satanic).
It reunites Twins Peaks actors Ray Wise (pictured; Mad Men; the secretary of state in X-Men: First Class) and Dana Ashbrook (TV series Crash and The Kill Point), and also features Derek Mears (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,...

Director: Steven C. Miller. Writer: Ben Powell. Cast: Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook and Derek Mears. If you read reviews on Steven C. Miller's (Automaton Transfusion) latest, then you will read a lot of comparisons between The Aggression Scale and Home Alone (1990). However, the former is much more violent than the latter and this film fan was reminded of the recent adaptation of I Spit on Your Grave (2010). In both films, young folk are on the run from vicious men and those vicious men find out that youth should not be underestimated. Violence awaits the foolhardy. Overall, Ben Powell's script creates for a tense and bloody time, with some predictability the film's only detriment. In case you have not heard, The Aggression Scale involves the arrest of a local mob boss (Ray Wise). He is accused of murder and he needs some stolen money to flee the country. Bellavance...

Remember the first time you watched Home Alone? You probably enjoyed it quite a bit, but still, somewhere deep in the back of your head, you knew it was missing something. That something was most likely extreme violence, bloody murder and a hot older sister. Lucky for you director Steven Miller and writer Ben Powell thought the very same thing. Their new film, The Aggression Scale, is about a group of thugs who invade a family’s home in search of money and kicks but find an emotionally disturbed boy instead. Owen is prone to violence, knowledgeable in the art of weapon-making and booby traps and very, very angry. He would eat Kevin McCallister for breakfast. The always wonderful Ray Wise stars as the mobster behind it all, and Dana Ashbrook joins him as his right-hand man and lead enforcer. That’s right…it’s a mini Twin Peaks reunion! Also...

SXSW's Midnighter films are known for being the edgiest, most gruesome and unflinching offerings the festival has to offer each year; titles like last year's Kill List go on to acquire great acclaim and cult followings after they reach mainstream distribution, and I believe that The Aggression Scale is a film destined for such a future.
Ray Wise is impeccably cast as Bellavance, a big-time mafioso who is out on a $1.5 million bail note after a span of time spent behind bars; he has 48 hours to pay the bail back or he heads into prison again for good. Upon his release from the big house, he discovers that one of the people he deals with has stolen a vast quantity of money from him, undercutting his ability to pay the note.

Getting its debut at this year’s SXSW festival next month, The Aggression Scale has already been picked up in advance by Anchor Bay, and it’s being described as in the vein of A History of Violence with a younger cast.
The first trailer for the film has gone online ahead of its premiere, via Collider, and it’s a promising, action-fuelled, eerie first look at the film. Screening as part of the festival’s Midnighters line-up, THR report that the film

The film has a fabulous genre pedigree, with stars Ray Wise (Reaper), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) and Fabienne Therese (John Dies at the End), and directed by Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion, Scream of the Banshee) off a script by Ben Powell (Satanic). Okay, I'm sold. After the jump, check out an exclusive image from the film, as well as the full trailer. Editors Note: It was just announced that The Agression Scale was picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay.

Here is the trailer for The Aggression Scale, thanks to Heat Vision. Steven C. Miller directed this genre film, which will have a world premiere at SXSW as part of the Midnighters program. The pic is described as a being "in the spirit of the 1980s canon and in the vein of A History of Violence but with the teens as the heroes, taking on four hitmen over $500,000 in stolen cash."
The cast includes Fabianne Therese (John Dies at the End), Ryan Hartwig (The Thompsons), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Jacob Reynolds (Gummo), Joseph McKelheer (The Hamiltons), and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks).
Miller directed this film based on a script by Ben Powell. I loved A History of Violence and like the fact that this has two people from Twin Peaks. The song used in the trailer makes sets the tone for a cool looking film.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced the highly anticipated features in its Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup, which will debut at this year’s Festival from March 9-17, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
The eleven films announced in the 2012 Midnighters program include a feast of titles that promise to rouse, haunt, and thrill the eager SXSW late-night audiences with an eclectic mix of thrills from genre filmmakers at the top of their game.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW Senior Programmer and Operations Manager Jarod Neece. “This year's program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”

Here is the place where I will start screaming about how everyone needs to just shut up and make room on their calendar to check out V/H/S because it’s so fun and scary and cool and such a great midnight film and so great to see with a crowd and then I’ll run out of breath from this ludicrous run-on sentence and get back to at least the appearance of professionalism. Joining their previously announced feature line-up, SXSW has now released their full listing of all films showing at the film festival this year, including Midnight features and a positively huge schedule of short films (including narrative shorts, documentary shorts, global shorts, music videos, Texas shorts, and Texas high school shorts). Some highlights to look out for on the Midnight beat include V/H/S (duh), the world premiere of Austin Chick’s Girls Against Boys, the...
