It was nervous and shellshocked Big Brother contestants who used to be told "it's all panto", but the phrase could just as easily apply to The X Factor. The singing behemoth has always been an over-the-top production, a ludicrous parade of contestants and a fantasy world of dance routines and sparkly outfits. To be honest, that's part of why we love it - it just wouldn't be as much fun without a bit of excess, would it? But it's also why The X Factor seems to lend itself to the exuberant world of the stage.
I Can't Sing! has been dogged by pre-opening night problems - cancelled shows, technical problems (understandable, given the truly impressive set) - but now that it's finally flung its doors open to the wider public, is it actually any good? Well, sometimes. But the first thing to know is that this is not your standard...

The cast of 'I Can't Sing - The X Factor Musical' would never audition for the TV series. West End stars Cynthia Erivo and Alan Morrissey - who play aspiring singers in Harry Hill's spoof of the ITV show - have argued that while the talent show promises pop stardom, success within the music industry feels more ''special'' if you work for it. Cynthia told Digital Spy: ''I wouldn't want to go that way, I'm quite satisfied with how my career's going - I know it's harder [but] I just prefer it like this, ''I guess when you know that you've...

The X Factor musical's lead stars have admitted that they would never audition for the TV programme.
Speaking to Digital Spy before the Royal Variety Performance, Cynthia Erivo and Alan Morrissey - who play aspiring singers in the Harry Hill-produced I Can't Sing - argued that success feels more "special" the harder you work for it.
"I wouldn't want to go that way," Erivo said. "I'm quite satisfied with how my career's going - I know it's harder [but] I just prefer it like this.
"I guess when you know that you've worked for something really hard and you get the result, there's a special sort of [satisfaction]. When you know you've got it for yourself, it's just nice."
Asked if I Can't Sing is more of an affectionate jibe at The X Factor than a full-on critique, Erivo replied: "I think it's a bit of both.
"I think there's a real heart to the story.

The X Factor musical is starting to take shape, and this week Digital Spy got treated to a preview of three chucklesome songs from Harry Hill's much-anticipated show.
Of course, we don't want to completely spoil the experience of I Can't Sing before it opens at the London Palladium next spring, but we couldn't resist sharing with you some of our favourite Simon Cowell-baiting lyrics...
The first song up was 'Please Simon', where an ensemble of X Factor auditionees desperately appeal to the show's version of Cowell, played by ex-EastEnders star Nigel Harman, in a Les Mis 'At The End of the Day' style:
"Please Simon, I won't give up I'll keep trying, every single member of my family is dying."
Ooh, hitting Simon right where it hurts - right in the sob story.
"Please Simon, this is a talent I've mastered, what gives you...
