Musical TV shows like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” or “Glee” have a built-in understanding with audiences that bursting into a song or dance is part of the storytelling. When it comes to non-musical series, however, staging a musical number or episode can be a more challenging when it comes to finding an organic way to work it into the plot.
Recently, The CW’s superhero show “The Flash” and Syfy’s fantasy drama “The Magicians” dipped their toes into the world of musicals. “The Flash” tapped a character called Music Meister (Darren Criss) to knock out Kara and Barry (Melissa Benoit, Grant Gustin) and send them into an alternate reality, where they had to sing and dance their way to finding solutions. Music Meister, a super villain who could control people through music, has already been introduced in the DC Universe via animated series “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” (and voiced...

On Issa Rae’s new HBO comedy “Insecure,” her on-screen alter ego Issa Dee is slowly finding her own voice – both at work (at a non-profit that helps underprivileged children) and in her personal life. It’s a voice that is increasingly playful, open but blunt all at once.
In one scene from Sunday’s premiere, Issa diagnoses her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) with a “broken pussy” that’s causing her lack of success with men. “If it could talk it would make that sad Marge Simpson groan,” Issa says.

“There is no line drawn. Everything is kind of fair game as it applies to our lives,” Rae told IndieWire. “Every writer in the room has a piece or a morsel or a chunk of their lives in the show as well.

It only gets harder and harder to stay loyal to guilty pleasures when the influx of “premium” television is as ridiculously high as it is right now. Every network seems to be trying to up the ante on one another, putting out high-wire act after high-wire act – Fargo on FX in the fall followed American Crime on ABC this winter, necessitating lots of deep breaths – and crowding up space on all of our collective DVRs.
That conspiratorial coterie of networks now includes Lifetime and its as-good-as-anything-else-on-tv UnREAL, bringing us to Devious Maids, which isn’t. And that’s the point. Marc Cherry’s soapy dish of a dramedy slides right into home in its fourth season: it’s as funny as ever, its all-female foursome are synced up like gangbusters, and its new central mystery – which involves a People’s Choice Award implanted...

I had a plan, I swear. In the days leading up to November 28th, a friend and I had negotiated the logistics of seeing a movie at one of the theatres listed on J.J.’s announcement—what to do if they’re sold out, what to do if for some reason we picked a movie that had no trailer in front of it (Plan B: sneak into the beginning of a different movie after ours ended)—all in the name of the purity of experiencing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer as it was meant to be experienced. As a spectacle, as a special event, as a collective moment of excitement and anticipation.
My resolve lasted about five minutes. At 10:05am on Friday, I was holed up in the office bathroom with my iPhone and earbuds, frantically trying to tap into the spotty wi-fi of the hotel next door.

You've got to be insane not to love Jane!
Not only is The CW's Jane the Virgin one of the best new series of the season, the dramedy's leading lady, Gina Rodriguez, is stealing everyone's attention (and hearts) as an effortlessly relatable role model.
ETonline sat down with the 29-year-old starlet on the Jane the Virgin to talk candidly about why we've dubbed this dramedy the most adorably addicting show of the Fall, and why Jane is one of the most badass female leads we've seen in a very long time.
Watch: Why 'Jane the Virgin's' Gina Rodriguez is a Role Model in the Making
Each week, the plot continues to get even more deliciously twisted as the series consistently embraces their telenovela roots, and pushes plotlines to the extreme. But despite all of the outrageous events, the character of Jane manages to stay grounded and endearing — a delicate balance that Rodriguez attributes to the...

The 90s revival can’t be ignored any longer. The nostalgia is in full bloom right now: walk down the high street and you’ll see 90s-inspired crop tops and stonewashed denim in every shop window, while current cool kids Iggy Azalea and Charli Xcx (neither of whom were old enough to see the film at the time) have paid slavish tribute to Clueless in the video for their current single Fancy. I was in London two weeks ago and caught four plays -- Well, three plays and one musical -- in three days, so when the Olivier Awards roll around, I'll be well-prepared. However, with Josh Lasser handling most of the New York junkets for Team HitFix, I haven't made it to NYC since Fall 2012, which would also be the last time I made it to Broadway. As a result, I've seen none of this year's Tony nominees. So follow along for full coverage of what I'm able to understand from the 2014 Tony Awards. I know Hugh Jackman is hosting. I know Neil Patrick Harris is both a performer and a guaranteed winner. Click through for the full live-blog and comment below, should the spirit move you! 7:55 p.m. Et. We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes VOD release information for Armistice, multiple teaser trailers, a Q&A with Matt Thompson from Bloodline, and a preview of Dept. of Monsterology:
Dept. of Monsterology: ”Officially, it’s the Department of Cryptozoology, Mythological Studies, Parapsychology and Fortean Phenomena. But to the rest of the students and staff at the Dunsany College, baffled by the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the Department and its affairs, it has another, more dismissive, name: The Department of Monsterology. Funded by the mysterious Hampton Foundation, the Dept. operates several field teams that roam the globe on extended research expeditions.
Their brief: to investigate the dark and unexplored corners of our world – the places we’ve forgotten, lost or believe to be mythical. And to study those things that may still be lurking there.

Allison Janney is one of Hollywood's most in-demand actresses. And for good reason. Her unique mixture of empathy and audacity has resulted in the creation of countless iconic characters (from The West Wing's C.J. Cregg to Loretta of Drop Dead Gorgeous fame) and this year will see her add, at least, seven to that ever-growing list!
Janney has already shone on the big screen in Touchy Feely and The Way Way Back (Trust Me and Bad Words have yet to be released) while small screen work on Veep, Masters of Sex and Mom ensures her fans will have endless conduits through which to enjoy Janney's brilliant brand of comedy. Arrested Development made a name for itself not only for its smart humor, but also its ability to work in callbacks both blatant and with a bit more subtlety.

'The Office' series finale: John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer close out once-in-a-lifetime experience
When Jenna Fischer was a little girl, she loved watching the hit NBC sitcom "Cheers" with her family and fantasizing about how much fun it would be to work as a member of a TV comedy ensemble like that. As luck would have it, that dream came true for her when she landed the plum role of Pam Beesly (later Halpert) on "The Office," the long-running comedy that finishes its nine-year run on the Peacock network with a one-hour finale on Thursday, May 16.
On that same night, when NBC begins an hour-long special that immediately precedes the final "Office" episode, Fischer will be making her New York theater debut in a much-anticipated work by A-list playwright Neil Labute, a career milestone any actress would covet -- and she knows she never would have gotten it without the years she put in at Dunder Mifflin, the fictional Scranton, Pa., paper company...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

The new fall season is closer than you think, and NBC has released their full schedule. Apart from reality favorites The Biggest Loser and The Voice, they are mixing things up quite a bit.
Take a look at a complete preview of the shows coming your way, and mark your calendars. It looks good for NBC this year, and while I’m not sure all of these look like winners, I think you’ll find at least a couple that you’re really going to like.

Chicago – When you’re in as much of a ratings struggle as NBC, it makes sense to shake things up and that’s exactly what they’re doing in the Fall with a new show or an old show in a new time every single night of the week. “Chicago Fire,” “Revolution,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Parenthood” are moving. “Community” is being held until a midseason, 13-episode run. No decision yet made on “Celebrity Apprentice” or “Hannibal,” which isn’t that surprising as they are mid-season shows anyway although it shouldn’t give fans of either program confidence as NBC announced a midseason schedule as well and they’re not on it. Anything could still happen with either program however and they could be held as replacements for shows that fail. That may be the best shot for “Hannibal” fans now. The best new show on the...

Cougar Town returns for season 5 in 2014
It’s been an interesting season for Cougar Town, one that’s had it’s share of emotional highs (‘Make It Better’) and overly broad comedic lows (last week’s ‘The Criminal Kind‘). Tonight’s two-part season finale falls somewhere in the middle: it’s one of the funnier episodes of the season, but is often too sentimental for its own good, despite having its heart in the right place in the most important moments, when the themes of family and hope are at their strongest.

Would You Rather – typically a harmless game of immature questions and self-discovery. Would you rather have a rewind button in your life, or a pause button? Would you rather make one new law of your choice or abolish an existing law? Would you rather go back in time and kill Hitler or bring five people back to life of your choosing? These go on for days, but all seem safe, right?
Well, since this is a dark, psychological, “torture porn” thriller, Would You Rather plays anything but nice. Instead of asking harmless questions of hypothetics, writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen and director David Guy Levy have teamed to ask some unfortunately desperate victims questions with actual life and death consequences, creating a sickening scenario of power abuse with the worst of intentions.

Chicago – Fox’s “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” is so horrendous that there were rumors, after it was picked up by the network and pilots were sent out to press last May, that the network heads might change their mind and decide not to air the show at all. That would have been the nice to do to the American public. An easy choice for the worst new show of the year (especially now that contenders “Free Agents” and “How to Be a Gentleman” have been axed), this offensively bad sitcom should be canceled before Christmas if Santa gets my wish list.
Television Rating: 0.0/5.0
Almost as if they’re going for a record number of unlikable characters, “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” features two single moms with their own serious issues with self-confidence and parenthood dealing with their awful offspring in unbelievable ways. Everett Kevin James in “Zookeeper”
The new Kevin James comedy from Frank Coraci, the director of “The Wedding Singer” and “The Waterboy,” reads a little like Dr. Dolittle — except everybody can hear the talking animals, not just the zookeeper. James stars as a lonely, single zookeeper named Griffin Keyes whose pending career change prompts the animals in his care to speak up and try and help him find a girlfriend. The 101-minute film also stars Donnie Wahlberg and Rosario Dawson.

If you’ve watched syndicated reruns of sitcom How I Met Your Mother lately, you might have been startled to see advertisements for very current movies such as Bad Teacher and Zookeeper in episodes that originally aired as early as 2006, long before those flicks were made. The photos here, for instance, are from the second-season episode titled “Swarley,” which originally aired Nov. 6, 2006 — more than four years before Bad Teacher hit theaters. So… what exactly is going with this phenomenon? EW investigated, and here’s the scoop.

Part of the fun in watching "Children's Hospital" is keeping a running tally on the number of actors in it who are alumnus of the best comedies of the last decade: "Arrested Development," (Michael Cera, Henry Winkler) "Party Down," (Ken Marino, Megan Mullaly, Adam Scott) "Parks and Recreation," (Mullally, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott) "The Daily Show," (Rob Corddry, Ed Helms) and "The League" (Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll). Given the common thread of David Wain to most of the cast and guest stars, it's only a matter of time before Michael Ian Black and Paul Rudd show up, and Jon Hamm -- because he's obligated to cameo in everything that's truly funny these days -- already has.
"Children's Hospital" is an unrelentingly funny stew of those aforementioned shows, combining their wacky absurdist sense of humor and an obsession with vagina metaphors with skewering parody of hospital shows, most tellingly "Grey's Anatomy,...

How can a TV show seem incredibly fresh and original, even as it's based on one of the oldest, most classic characters in human history?
When it's the new FX show Wilfred, about a hapless man and the neighbor's dog, which only he sees as a man in a ridiculous dog costume.
One night, a man named Ryan (Elijah Wood) decides to kill himself by overdosing on pills. But weirdly, he doesn't die. The next day, a neighbor asks him to watch her dog Wilfred for the day. But while everyone else sees Wilfred as a dog, Ryan sees the dog as a man in a dog costume (Jason Gann).
In the pilot and two other episodes (provided to AfterElton.com for review), Wilfred proceeds to wreak complete havoc on Ryan's already miserable life: goading the bully of a neighbor (played by Ethan Suplee, Randy on My Name is Earl) into harassing him,...

Tons of updates today. Let's start with Bear McCreary.
GameMusic.net posted an interview they did with him in April. It's mostly about the Socom 4 score, but Caprica and BSG also get a mention, as well as the other shows he is/was scoring. Here is a snippet:
Matt: To switch a bit, in addition to video games, you scored three television series over the past season: Eureka, The Walking Dead, and The Cape. How were you able to fit in composing and recording for so many projects?
Bear McCreary: I don't sleep a lot (laughs). The schedules are tough, but thankfully, of the three shows that you cited, two of them are on cable and cable has a very different schedule than network television. Generally I'm able to weave my way through the schedules and I usually don't have to work on more than one show at any given time.

Lidsville -Sid Krofft talked to me over the phone. That’s almost as wild and weird as the shows he created with his brother Marty that dominated the ’70s. Their live action Saturday morning series mixed puppets and people went perfect with the sugar rush from a fresh bowl of Count Chocula. This was like a weird childhood dream as I had so many questions that had puzzled me since childhood. Krofft was eager to give answers.
He was excited about Vivendi Entertainment’s recent release of H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series Collector’s Edition. There’s also a normal H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series. What’s the difference? A cool bobblehead of H.R. Pufnstuf. I’ve had little contact with the bobblehead since my two year-old has turned it into her new best friend. I told Sid Krofft how another generation has embraced the lizard hero of my youth.

We haven’t seen Elizabeth Banks give a performance as she does in Paul Haggis’ new thriller The Next Three Days. Being a wonderful comedic talent, she’s appeared on the big screen in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Role Models, Zach and Miri Make a Porno and Wet Hot American Summer, and on the small screen in Scrubs and 30 Rock. Now, opposite Russell Crowe, she takes a dramatic turn and delivers one of this year’s best supporting performances as Lara Brennan, a wife and mother accused of killing a co-worker.
At a roundtable interview, Ms. Banks spoke with the Owf about her experience making The Next Three Days. She also discussed her upcoming directorial debut – a short film entitled “Middle School Date,” which will be included in the Farrelly brothers project “Movie 43.”

This is the Pajiba Power Rankings for episodes that aired between Sunday October 23rd and Saturday, October 30th.
10. Cougar Town: An unusually sweet episode that lands in the top ten this week on the strength of an unexpected guest star in Ken Jenkins, aka, Bob Kelso. As far as I'm concerned, Bill Lawrence can keep rolling in those "Scrubs" cameos every single week.
9. Sons of Anarchy: I still like it, but I expected more from this super-sized episode that puts the Sons in Ireland. Nevertheless, it was still the scenes in Charming -- with Tig -- that were the most compelling (on a side note, I don't keep up too much with the real names of the actors on this show, but this week, I finally looked it up to see who the third named woman is in the credits -- Kim Coates -- only to realize that...

These days big budget films are a staple of movie-going fare. Big stars, huge budgets, and giant “event” pictures are given wide release and fill cineplexes around the world. For decades it has been the formula that has fueled what many refer to as “Hollywood.” But times are changing. Technology is seeing to that.
And as the state of the art advances, costs of cameras come down, and with the advent of the High Definition Digital format, the “Hollywood Formula” is being adapted by some very gifted filmmakers, and they are using it to their – and our – advantage.
Enter visual FX wizards and filmmakers, Colin and Greg Strause. Years of working as two of the industry’s most sought after visual FX artists provided them with the opportunity to direct their first film, the highly debated Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. After enduring the promises and betrayals inherent with working in the studio system,...

Throughout its freshman season, Cougar Town has become quite the great escape. They’ve created this tiny, inside-jokey world, presumably somewhere in Florida but seemingly on another planet, that has nothing to do with reality. Last night’s season finale was the best. The characters drank more, danced more, and were responsible for way way way less than the usual “very little.” No one went to work, except Grayson because he works in a bar. They played Ultimate Penny Can all day, group-boozed in bed all night, and set up complicated voice recordings and balloon traps in order to more emphatically make their points.

Television shows are a lot like relationships. You invite them into your lives, and sometimes you get really attached to them, and then the assholes abandon you, leaving you curled up with your remote control, weeping into your couch cushion, and eating ice cream. Some of us, rather than move on, will relive that relationship over and over and over, maybe get a little obsessive about it, and start wearing brown coats and saying that cool things are "shiny." Others threaten to leave us, and occasionally, we can mount a stalking campaign that the show finds endearing, which will often save it for another year or so (though, never beyond that, and it's hardly ever the same). Some shows are actually heightened by the thrill of the chase -- a threatened cancellation at the end of each season somehow keeps us even closer together, knowing that each episode could be its last.

George stayed human, and therefor not naked, for two episodes.
It should go without saying that there are spoilers here, so folks shouldn’t read this if they don’t want to be spoiled. For that same reason, in your comments we ask that you keep spoilers out of the headlines.
We start with a Mitchell flashback to New Year’s Eve 1999 with Mitchell tied to a chair in a room. Maybe this is some English New Year's Eve custom us Yanks don't get? Another Boxing Day?
Anyway, a handsome debonair vampire is kneeling in front of Mitch. It turns out they’re friends, and the vamp is going to help Mitchell give up the blood. I guess this must be one of Mitchell's New Year's Resolutions: Finally read some Jane Austen. Stop watching so much reality telly. Lay off the crisps. Stop killing and draining humans of blood. The usual.

Welcome to another year of TV or Not TV where I’m amazed at what I will sit around and watch.
This past week I was on vacation, but not the traditional vacation that you might invision. Some people like to go away from their home for several days and wear themselves out running around and doing things under the guise of having fun. Clearly, explained that way, you can see what I mean by that not being a vacation. Who can relax with all those activities and other nonsense? Not me. I did what every sane person would do: I took time off of work and I stayed home.
In the interest of full disclosure I have to tell you that the majority of the time what I really spent my time doing was getting immersed in the world of the Lego Star Wars saga. Yes the prequels sucked...

Scrubs started off as one of the funniest and most promising shows of its time. The innermost fantasies of J.D. (Zach Braff) conflicting with the harsh sarcasm of Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) provided lots of laughs over the years, as did the bromance of J.D. and his long-time friend Turk (Donald Faison) in the midst of their struggles to make a name for themselves at Sacred Heart, the hospital where they interned, had their residencies and eventually worked as doctors. In the show’s eighth year, all the curveballs of past seasons begin to wind down as the cast takes what seems like their final bow.
In the past seasons, J.D. has dated all sorts of women (typically recognizable guest stars) and has found two things. The first is that sex eventually leads to pregnancy and he is now the father of a baby boy with...

Television Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – In a landscape of increasingly lower ratings for quirky TV comedy (talk to the producers of “Scrubs” if you don’t believe me), I’m kind of amazed that “Better Off Ted” made it to the air. If “Arrested Development” and everything Andy Richter has ever tried couldn’t find an audience, who thought people would be attracted to this left-of-center workplace sitcom? And the fact that it doesn’t live up to the potential of its concept means the show’s thin chance of survival just disappeared.
