Welcome to Den Of Geek’s newest regular feature. Leaving a monthly stain on the glowing veneer of the site’s hallowed digital halls, this blog’s humble goal is to explore cinema’s shady alleyways in search of the obscure, weird and not-so-wonderful, bad taste, or just plain bad. All clear? Then, let’s get wading.
Everyone knows that critics are a wretched, bitter cross-section of human sewage, right? In case you’d forgotten, the first few films we encounter provide evidence of these dregs of society finally getting their just desserts.
Vincent Price might be the perfect critic-slayer. Surely there can be no finer way to go than accompanied by a Shakespearian quote in the high-camp dulcet tones of a horror legend. Theatre Of Blood,...

(Cbr) Actors Ashley Bell and Clint Howard stopped by the Cbr Speakeasy in Los Angeles to discuss noir superhero film "Sparks," directed by Christopher Folino and based on the graphic novel of the same name. It's very possible fans will know Bell and Howard from their work in other films and television shows -- Bell plays Nell Sweetzer in "The Last Exorcism" series and portrayed Karina in webisodes for "The Walking Dead," while Howard's lengthy career in film and television includes credits in everything from "Apollo 13" and "Frost/Nixon" to "Star Trek" and Disney's "The Jungle Book." In "Sparks," Bell took on the role of Lady Heavenly, the vigilante romantic interest of Sparks, while Howard plays Gordon Eldridge, the head of the newspaper. During their interview with Cbr Executive Producer Jonah Weiland, Bell and Howard discussed the draw of "Sparks" and the challenge of bringing superheroes to life on a budget.

Sparks is a phenomenal new period superhero movie co-directed by Christopher Folino and Todd Burrows. It stars Chase Williamson as the title hero, Ashley Bell, Clancy Brown, Jake Busey, William Katt and Clint Howard. It is currently playing in limited theatrical release — and is well worth seeing in the theater — and streaming on iTunes.
The Underground Film Journal’s Executive Editor, Mike Everleth, attended a special screening on March 16 during the movie’s opening weekend, at which filmmaker Folino and stars Bell, Katt and Howard were in attendance. The photo above and those in the gallery below were all taken at this event.
Folino previously solo directed the award-winning indie comedy Gamers, which the Journal was a fan and supporter of back in the day. (Gamers is also currently streaming on Amazon.)

Here's a hearty keep-at-it award for Christopher Folino and Todd Burrows, directors of this restless, reckless superhero crime curio, an on-the-cheap indie that feels like a couple years' worth of some noirish throwback comic book series shredded up and fed into one of those machines where dollar bills fly around and the contestant inside has to grab them. Before you've even quite grokked who's who and what's what, everyone and everything get revealed as something different still. That's a shame, since at least one of the surprises would be a Vertigo meets Oldboy meets The Empire Strikes Back doozy if it were carefully built toward rather than left for us to snatch from the tumult. I only realized the full walloping ick of it a scene later, when the movie was off c...

"1948 - I remember that year well... It was the year I met her... And it was the year a serial killer came to my town." Today's indie trailer is for a dark superhero or super powers action-thriller titled Sparks, from co-directors Todd Burrows & Christopher Folino. Up-and-coming actor Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End and "Video Game High School") plays Ian Sparks, a masked vigilante who "discovers the dark side to heroism." IMDb's synopsis leaves out the super-powered group Rochester 13, but they're in this trailer. The cast includes Ashley Bell, Clancy Brown, Jake Busey, William Katt, Marina Squerciati. I'm curious about it. Watch the official trailer for Todd Burrows & Christopher Folino's Sparks, in high def from Apple: "Supers like me had kept this town safe..." Almost four years have passed since William Katt (TV's Greatest American Hero) launched Catastrophic Comics and released it's first title Sparks, which he co-created with writer/director Christopher Folino. Looking for a cheap laugh?
As the Video on Demand wars heats up, Amazon has started really ramping up their own online offerings. Yes, they still sell DVDs, but now they sell tons of movies that you can watch either on your computer monitor or download to a mobile device.
While, of course, Amazon is banking its VOD business on getting top Hollywood content, lots of smaller distributors are allowing their releases to be available on VOD in addition to selling DVDs on the site as well. Plus, Amazon’s longtime CreateSpace DVD on Demand business is also allowing for VOD, directly giving filmmakers some VOD power after they’ve been locked out of iTunes, Netflix and/or Hulu.
Renting feature length movies on Amazon usually runs about $1.99 to $2.99, so if you’re looking for a quick cheap laugh, these quirky, oddball little movies might satisfy your needs.
