Skybound Entertainment, the multimedia company behind the Walking Dead and Invincible comics and TV series, is beefing up its editorial arm.
The company has hired longtime DC Comics editor Ben Abernathy to act as executive editor. The move had been expected since Abernathy left DC in January. Blake Kobashigawa, meanwhile, joins the company from comics company Idw as senior director, business development, while Alex Hargett has been tapped as Skybound’s director, brand, editorial. The company’s Arune Singh has been promoted to vp, brand, editorial.
The moves come after a banner year for Skybound’s publishing division and reflect a deeper commitment to the comic art form. DC Comics will resurrect their 'out-of-continuity', "Elseworlds" concepts, with new titles available in 2024, including "Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age", "Batman the Barbarian", "Green Lantern: Dark" and a whole lot more:
"...'Elseworlds' was established to feature DC characters in settings outside regular comic book continuity, with 'The Batman' movie franchise a prome example if this imaginative shift."
"Out-of-continuity stories have always been a pillar of DC publishing, granting creators the ability to explore all the wild corners of the 'DC Universe'", said DC Editor Ben Abernathy. "We’re excited to bring a whole new slate of titles under the 'Elseworlds' banner in 2024, combining some all-new titles from top storytellers, as well as sequels from the current DC line that fit that same out-of-continuity aesthetic."
Writers and illustrators include Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola, Greg Smallwood, Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons.

John Ridley is no stranger to telling stories. The Oscar-winning writer has spent his life weaving yarns both on the page and the screen. He’s also a lifelong comics fan and an accomplished comic book writer.
With The Other History of the DC Universe, he began reshaping one of the oldest and most seminal multiverses in the medium. As that series reaches its midpoint, he’s also just finished his first stint writing one of the most iconic heroes in the DC Comics trinity: Batman. But this isn’t your daddy’s Batman. In fact, Ridley, along with editor Ben Abernathy and artistic collaborator Nick Derington, have crafted a new vision of the Dark Knight.
In Future State: The Next Batman, Lucius Fox’s long absent son, Tim Fox, takes on the mantle. Despite the book’s futuristic setting, this is a back to basics take on the Bat,...

The smash success of DCeased, the DC zombies comic is all in its emotional power.
This article contains major spoilers for DCeased.
When DCeased was announced, it’s safe to assume it was met with more than a few eye rolls. Did the world really need a DC zombies book as the rest of pop culture seems to be putting a lid on the zombie phenomenon for another few years? “I'm not a zombie fan either, or a horror fan, like at all,” says Tom Taylor, writer of DCeased, in a chat ahead of the release of the sold-out hardcover collection of what ended up being a critical darling and a runaway train on comic shop shelves. “What I am is a DC fan, and I enjoy a challenge. So for me, it was actually something I hemmed and hawed about when [DCeased editor] Ben Abernathy contacted me about it.
