Back in 1983 Jim Wynorski shot his first film, The Lost Empire, which has itself been "lost" for several years. Finally, on April 22nd it's getting its long-awaited home video release on DVD.
From the Press Release:
In 1983 a young director stepped behind the camera for the first time and began to shoot a film which he thought might be both his first and his last. An ardent fan of "B" cinema, Jim Wynorski decided to cram this film with everything he loved.
"I got my first break doing The Lost Empire for Plitt Theatres," says Jim Wynorski. "The late owner, Henry Plitt (a decorated war hero), wanted to make a low budget sci-fi action picture as a tax loss. I never knew that when I made the show, so I put my heart and soul into the project. When it finally got completed, Plitt actually liked it enough to give...

Currently a junior studying at Nyu's Tisch School of the Arts, Madeline Voges was home in Tampa, Fla., for Thanksgiving break when she was contacted by co-producer William Dever about auditioning for "Gila!," a remake of the 1959 film "The Giant Gila Monster" that would air on Syfy as a movie of the week. Having seen her multimedia résumé on BackStage.com, Dever thought Voges would be right for the lead role of Lisa, emailed her the script, and asked her to choose a scene and submit an audition video as soon as possible. "I chose a scene in which I talk to my boyfriend and I can tell there's something wrong, but he won't tell me what it is," Voges says. "[It was] a more intense and emotional scene that showed range." After Voges sent her audition via Yousendit, Dever emailed her back to offer her the part. A week...

What motion picture could possibly be so epic it would require the combined directorial talents of the director of Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the director of Chopping Mall? Would you believe a remake of the 1959 bad movie classic The Giant Gila Monster?
If you’re going to remake a movie, you might as well remake a bad one, and The Giant Gila Monster is most definitely a bad movie. Sure, the ultra low budget 1959 drive-in creature feature that used footage of a real live gila monster as its greatest special effect has marked its place as a classic b-movie; let’s just not kid ourselves about it actually being a good movie.
So can a low budget remake of The Giant Gila Monster actually make a good movie out of hallmark of bad cinema? It certainly can’t tarnish its legacy.

The Golden Cobb Awards are another fan-nominated, online-voting, totally meaningless conglomeration of random people's input.
Much like The Rondos (which arguably are just as random and lacking in quality control), The Golden Cobb Awards were created by the people at The B-Movie Celebration to give horror and sci-fi fans a way to honor their favorite low-budget genre people and movies. Putting aside the fact that these awards are arbitrary and virtually meaningless, I take issue with the way nominations for awards like these are conducted. People are allowed to email the creators of the awards and nominate their favorite actors, movies, and filmmakers, and most people are not only idiots, they're nominating their friends or people with whom they'd like to have sex. I mean, that's what we'd all do. That's how nominations from the public work. I also take issue with the way this year's awards, in particular, are laid out.
