Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Shamos started working on the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Here We Are, seven years ago, while others, like Denis O’Hare, were asked to join the project last summer.
But for everyone now starring in the show, which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22, joining the project was an immediate yes, largely due to the novelty of being in a new Sondheim piece, which ended up being the composer’s first new show in decades, as well as his last.
“I know all [his] shows. I know the music. I didn’t even have to read it. I said yes before I read it,” said Bobby Cannavale, who is part of the show’s ensemble cast, which also includes David Hyde Pierce, Micaela Diamond and Rachel Bay Jones.

In the penultimate song in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” Dot implores the artist George to “give us more to see.” The late maestro has done so himself one last time with the world premiere of his final musical, “Here We Are,” which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22. Written with dramatist David Ives, the musical takes inspiration from two Luis Buñuel films – “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel” – that it marries with one set of characters.
Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello played an integral role in the show’s development and directs its first production. He has assembled an unrivaled ensemble to take on the roles of the unimaginably affluent characters who spend the first act trying to find a restaurant in which to have brunch, and who in the second act find themselves unable to leave after their meal.

A version of this story about Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Five seasons of Amazon’s pop-culture-reveling hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has yielded more stars rising than bagel dough, but possibly none more so than show composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore. The duo, who met at Northwestern and mentored with “The Muppet Show” veteran and multiple Emmy winner Larry Grossman, are responsible for pretty much any piece of music you hear that isn’t from someone’s songbook, and like other efforts from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, you can bet musical numbers are going to be part of the deal.
“We did actually we were set up on a sort of blind date with them about close to 10 years ago now,” Mizer says. “We’d been writing a stage musical...

The Band’s Visit completed a remarkable 10-trophy night by winning Best Musical at the 72nd Tony Awards. The critical favorite cruised past the competition, while some notables were shut out, including Tina Fey’s Mean Girls and Disney’s Frozen.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won Best Play along with five other awards tonight. For the complete list of winners, click here.
A night of few surprises and virtually no unjustifiable honors. If CBS — and maybe the Broadway road show industry — might have wished for a few bigger, splashier wins for bigger, splashier productions, they’ll concede so only quietly. A Band’s Visit, a critical favorite, certainly won’t have the name recognition of Disney’s Frozen or Tina Fey’s Mean Girls as it takes up stakes in theaters across the country, all the more reason those 10 Tonys landed with the right show.

Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center honored multi-discipline creative artist Lin-Manuel Miranda with the 18th Monte Cristo Award, last week at a private dinner at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
An alumnus of the O’Neill, Miranda’s first professional production was at the O’Neill’s National Music Theater Conference with In The Heights in 2005. The gala dinner featured a conversation with the honoree and raised $575,000 to support the Center’s commitment to developing new work and new artists for the stage.
The O’Neill annually bestows its Monte Cristo Award on a prominent theater artist whose work has had an extraordinary impact on American theater, in memory of its namesake.

Every year, the featured acting races at the Tony Awards prove to be the most daunting to predict. Whereas the lead races rarely have more than a dozen possibilities, there is a true embarrassment of riches to sift through when it comes to the supporting players. Before you make your 2018 Tony predictions in advance of the May 1 announcement read our breakdown of these four tough categories based on our official Tony Awards odds.
Featured Actor in a Play
Nathan Lane should send the Tony Administration Committee gift bags for placing him in the Featured category. His towering portrayal of Roy Cohn is likely to win. Lane’s co-star James McArdle should also find a spot for his neurotic Louis. The other sure bet is Anthony Boyle’s heart-wrenching and Olivier winning performance in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

The theater award season is officially in full swing. Broadway regulars and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” stars Jane Krakowski and Tituss Burgess honored the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway as they announced the nominations for the 63rd Drama Desk Awards April 26 at Feinstein’s/54 Below. Spinning circles around other productions, the Broadway musical revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” led with the most recognition. The 12 nominations included cast members Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller, Alexander Gemignani, and Lindsay Mendez, as well as for “Outstanding Revival of a Musical.” New Broadway musical “SpongeBob SquarePants” soaked up 11 nominations and “Mean Girls” fetched 10. Of the 2017–18 season’s plays, the West End transfers of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “People Places & Things,” and “Angels in America,” plus the revival of Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women,” netted the most nominations in the play...

Audiences encountering Joshua Henry’s electrifying performance as the charismatic but star-cursed Billy Bigelow will long remember the experience. In this new Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” Henry shows off the exceptionally beautiful voice of a genuine actor-singer, a voice that while warm and mellow, can also soar with joy and tremble in despair.
Director Jack O’Brien has given us a conventional production of “Carousel,” in the sense of a show that takes no risks but preserves and protects all the original values of a great American musical. This isn’t obvious at first glance, because Santo Loquasto has designed a breathtaking abstract vision of a carousel — complete with flying horses/dancers — to open the show. But the rest of the musical settles into visual comfort zones for scenes set along the waterfront of the 19th-century New England mill town where the show is set.

Let’s state the obvious. Carousel is a masterpiece, a sublime piece of 20th Century musical theater that includes among its abundant treasures a song, “If I Loved You”, that ranks among the most beautiful ever written for the stage (I’d say the most beautiful but I’m not on a barstool). Jack O’Brien’s revival, at the Imperial Theatre and Broadway’s first in more than 20 years, superbly sung by Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller and Renée Fleming, is ravishing, as lovely as anything you’ll see and hear this season.
If only Billy Bigelow could keep his fists off women.
“Problematic” is the generous description overheard from one patron about a life lesson or two embedded in Carousel, but feel free to use stronger language. Odious works.
Whether O’Brien and his producer Scott Rudin should have tinkered in some way with this masterwork, somehow lessening carnival...
