“Do your recon,” Brian Cox says to Sinqua Walls in the 2022 film Mending the Line. “More great literature has been written about fly-fishing than any other sport.” So begins a reluctant friendship between two military men that grows while they wade in Montana’s shallow waters waiting for pike to bite.
From director Joshua Caldwell (Infamous), the film centers around a Marine living with trauma (Walls) who learns to face his struggles head-on as he fosters an unlikely friendship with an older veteran (Cox).

Colter (Walls), a sergeant in the Marines, has just returned from Afghanistan, where he was wounded right before his tour ended. He’s tormented by flashbacks and nightmares about what happened to his fellow Marines and racked with guilt that he was unable to prevent casualties among them. As random and arbitrary as Netflix's Top 10 can appear, it starts to become more predictable upon closer inspection. Like the media rental stores of ancient times (which were essentially the streaming services of their epoch), new Netflix originals inevitably rank high before dwindling off in the same way that Blockbusters would initially stock their shelves with roughly 10,000 copies of the latest tentpole. Along those same lines, viewers frequently play catchup right before a show returns by marathoning its previous season(s), which is how a cult Syfy comedy series like "Resident Alien" ends up charting seemingly out of the blue.
Then there are the under-the-radar titles that find their way onto Netflix only to be discovered anew by its users, much like a customer perusing the aisles of their local video rental shop and stumbling upon some previously ignored movie featuring one of their favorite actors. So it is...

Combat veterans, famously, don’t tend to talk much, if at all, about their experiences of war. At least not to civilians, and maybe not even to their closest relatives. Knowing this, those of us who aren’t veterans tend to have ideas about the things they aren’t discussing. Things like violence and fear and the chaos and insanity of battle. That’s surely a part of it, but in a way it’s also the heightened cinematic version, the one we’ve all gotten from war movies. What it leaves out are the torn-up emotions of soldiers, the lifelong imprint left upon them not just by the cataclysm of war but by their relationship with their fellow soldiers — the loyalty and love, the complex code of liberation and guilt at having survived.

"If you're gonna fish, don't do it alone." Blue Fox Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Mending the Line, directed by Joshua Caldwell. This premiered at a few festivals in 2022, and is opening this summer. Mending the Line is a story about finding something to make living worthwhile. John Cotler, a wounded veteran, returns home still carrying the demons of war, hauntingly disturbed by the everyday expectations of friendships and love interests. In Livingston, Montana, he meets Ike, a surly, headstrong fly-fisherman more than twice his age, and Lucy, a talented photographer turned librarian who reads aloud to veterans, both struggling in their own way. Colter wants only to re-enlist, to have something to die for. But the real challenge is finding something to live for. Brian Cox stars with Sinqua Walls, Perry Mattfeld, Chris Galust, Patricia Heaton, & Wes Studi. This looks better than it sounds,...

2020, as well as being an all-round garbage fire, is likely to go down as a strange year for film. Almost all of year’s biggest titles remain in limbo, waiting for cinemas to be able to safely reopen. That said, more than half way through the year, we have now seen a lot of excellent films getting released. Some managed to sneak in to cinemas in ‘the time before’, but many have made their debuts via streaming or paid VOD.
Even with a much reduced slate, there are still great films out there that have either got lost in the shuffle or might not have had the mainstream appeal to connect with an audience as wide as they deserve. Here, we’ve got several of the Hey U Guys staff together to pick some of their favourites of 2020 so far that you might not have caught up with yet.

Having just been released from prison for armed robbery and assault, Dean has to live with his ‘drunk of a father’ if he is to have a chance at a normal life. But when an accident happens and Dean’s father ends up dead, all bets are off. At the same time, after a violent argument at home after her savings are stolen, Arielle leaves and takes Dean with her as they set out on the road to Hollywood in search of a new life, one step closer to the fame Arielle so desperately desires.

We live during a time where every single aspect of our daily existence can be documented on Social Media. There are celebrities who are only famous for being famous, or through being an “influencer” on sites like Instagram. Criminals are even caught because they brag about their crimes on Social Media. So, seeing a film like Infamous try and take that to its cinematic extreme, makes sense. Now, the flick itself is fairly mediocre, but the idea at its core is a solid one. With better execution, this could have been something. Instead, it’s just another forgettable effort that can’t live up to its initial promise. The movie is a crime tale, taking some of its cues from Bonnie and Clyde. Here, Arielle (Bella Thorne) is a resident of a small Florida town, yearning for more. She has a tough home life, vacuous friends, and a menial job at a diner.

This is the biggest weekend yet for new movies. Not only are more cinemas re-opening nationwide, but three relatively huge titles from big-name directors — Judd Apatow, Spike Lee and Kenneth Branagh — find their way straight to streaming as well, offering movie buffs myriad options to feed their appetite.
The largest of these new releases is “The King of Staten Island,” which was supposed to open the SXSW Film Festival back in March, until that event was canceled by the coronavirus outbreak. Universal has since decided to go the same “home premiere” route that it did with “Trolls World Tour,” pricing digital rentals at $19.99.
But the movie of the moment is Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” which coincides with nationwide demonstrations over the death of George Floyd. The drama interweaves the largely untold story of Black servicemen in the Vietnam War with a modern-day adventure plot, as four veterans return...

As with all Bonnie and Clyde movies, from the classic (Arthur Penn’s “Bonnie and Clyde”) to the searingly contemporary (Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim”), there’s no doubt where Joshua Caldwell’s “Infamous” will end. It even starts at the end, all the better to remind how these stories conclude: a swirl of blood-stained money, a pile of dead bodies, and at least one dedicated criminal wondering how the hell they’re going to get out of this pickle.
This time, however, the last gal standing is armed with something unexpected: a smartphone, trained on her face as she unpacks, in real time and to thousands of followers, why she still hopes this all might turn out okay. After all, Arielle (Bella Thorne) always “knew she was going to be famous,” and as her engagement numbers tick ever upward, it seems as if she’s gotten that wish. Too...

There’s something perversely fascinating about a film as aggressively off-putting as “Infamous,” a lovers-on-the-run crime drama that practically defies you to develop a rooting interest in its two dim-bulb lead characters. Writer-director Joshua Caldwell borrows freely and indiscriminately from several earlier and superior examples of its sub-genre — particularly “Gun Crazy,” “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Natural Born Killers” — while attempting to craft some kind of cautionary tale about the many and varied ways social media can turn the dangerously discontented into sociopathic celebrity-seekers. But as he indefatigably underscores the obvious while steadily escalating the violence, he does little to sustain the attention of his audience while taking an unconscionably long time to arrive at a thoroughly predictable conclusion.
Right at the start, Caldwell makes a serious mistake by borrowing a page from classic films noir and opening “Infamous” with a scene that reveals where everything will ultimately wind up. Maybe...

Not only are drive-ins making a comeback as the nation seeks movie-viewing alternatives in the slow recovery from the pandemic, but they’re actually taking a chance on films.
Vertical Entertainment will bow the Bella Thorne action-crime thriller Infamous in close to three dozen drive-ins on the east coast, in the midwest and the south. The film will also be available in digital virtual cinemas, all starting on Friday, June 12.

"How do you think this ends!?" Vertical Entertainment has launched an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Infamous, the latest from filmmaker Joshua Caldwell. This is the next in a new subgenre of dark films where social media fame is the catalyst for some kind of sick activity (also see Spree from this year). Two young lovers rob their way across the southland, posting their exploits to social media, gaining fame and followers as a result. "The two become a modern day viral Bonnie & Clyde steam-rolling towards a tragic ending." Starring Bella Thorne as Arielle, and Jake Manley as Dean, joined by Amber Riley, Marisa Coughlan, Billy Blair, & Robert Peters. This looks especially cheesy and way more about glorifying fame than condemning, at least at first glance. Check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Joshua Caldwell's Infamous, direct from Vertical's YouTube: Arielle is a...

Spoiler alert, but Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was, in fact, not my favorite film of the year. I figured I should just get that out of the way at the start for those of you who feared I might have the same #1 film as Brad and Mike, both of whom listed Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's latest as their favorite film from 2014. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Birdman, but in a surprise to even myself, it didn't make my list, which I think you can pretty much chalk up to the surprisingly good year 2014 wound up being. I was certainly among the scoffers last fall about it being a bit of down year, and just a month or so ago I was of the opinion 2014 offered a lot of films to like, but very few to love. After going through and finalizing my list, I'd like to retract that statement.

This time of year most everyone in the film world is talking about Oscar contenders, movies like Boyhood, Birdman, and Selma, which get more press each week as awards season marches on. However, I'm here today to provide a recommendation for a film you likely haven't heard of, which you can check out right now on VOD. The film is called Layover, and it is an impressive high-concept drama that took me completely by surprise. The first outing from writer-director Joshua Caldwell, Layover is very much in the vein of Richard Linklater's Before trilogy. Driven not by traditional plot mechanics but by the characters we see on screen and the way they interact with the world around them, Caldwell's primarily French-language film centers on a Parisian woman named Simone (Nathalie Fay) as she navigates the city of Los Angeles for a night after her connecting flight to Singapore is cancelled.
