David Simon is developing a new series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
Simon is attached to write and executive produce the drama project, currently titled “The System.” Lily Thorne and Larissa MacFarquhar will also write and co-executive produce, with Kiese Laymon also attached to write.
The project is based on a series of New Yorker articles written by MacFarquhar. The official description states that the show “will examine the foster care and child protective service systems from the viewpoint of family court judges and lawyers, as well as social workers, caretakers, mothers, and the children themselves, and will probe the risks and benefits of removing children from families of origin.”
Should the project move forward, it would be Simon’s ninth HBO series. He is perhaps best known for his work on the critically-acclaimed series “The Wire,” which aired for five seasons at the premium cabler. He most recently...

Exclusive: Trevor Noah’s Day Zero Productions is developing a series based on Kiese Laymon’s coming-of-age novel Long Division.
The adaptation comes as it shuffles its television executive ranks with the hire of Chloe Ifshin as VP of Scripted Television and Eugene Han as Head of Unscripted Development.
The book, which was published by Simon & Schuster in 2021, explores family, hope, grief, love, and race through poetic language and satire.
It weaves together the coming-of-age stories of two Citoyen “City” Coldsons from different time periods in the coastal community of Melahatchie, Mississippi. One City lives in 2013, where after an onstage meltdown during a nationally televised quiz contest, he becomes an overnight YouTube celebrity and is sent to stay with his grandmother in Melahatchie, where a young girl named Baize Shephard has recently disappeared. Before leaving, City is given a strange book called ‘Long Division,’ which tells the story of...

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.
All caps, bold: Movie
All caps, bold, asterisk: Short*
All caps: TV Series
