Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...

The "Paranormal Activity" movies are credited with taking the terror out of art-directed dungeons and dilapidated bathrooms and putting it right smack dab in the middle of our bedrooms. The "Saw" series raised a white flag of surrender after "Paranormal Activity" took most of the Halloween box office dollars in 2009, bringing an end to Jigsaw's legacy and returning us to the land of lo-fi horror.
Since then, the "Paranormal" series has become something of its own "Saw"-sized franchise, with the fourth installment set to hit theaters this Friday. Somewhat unfortunately (though probably inevitably), the more this decades-spanning haunted house tale expands and explains its increasingly silly mythology, the less scary and interesting it becomes — though we have to give props to the producers for maintaining the low-budget, "found footage" aesthetic that the first film incorporated so brilliantly.

I love the .Paranormal Activity. franchise. The first one intrigued me, the second one scared me, and the third made me believe in the potency of the franchise. So I was happy as a clam to interview the directors of the third installment, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
("Paranormal Activity 3" Movie Review)
One of the biggest questions the fans were asking was . how come there were some scenes shown in the trailer that were not shown on the final cut?
But we.ll get to that in a minute.
For now, let.s congratulate Joost and Schulman for keeping the .Paramount Activity. tradition of no gore, just good old-fashioned scares alive!
Oh yeah, and let.s congratulate them too for having the biggest box-office opening for a horror film ever, and for the biggest opening of any film in October!
In this interview, we talked about:

Chicago – In our latest horror sequel edition of HollywoodChicago.com Hookup: Film, we have 20 admit-two passes up for grabs to the advance Chicago screening of the highly anticipated sequel “Paranormal Activity 2”!
“Paranormal Activity,” which was released only 13 months ago on Sept. 25, 2009, has gone down in history as one of the most profitable films of all time based on return on investment. The film had a production budget of $15,000 with a worldwide box-office gross of $193 million. Paramount/DreamWorks acquired the U.S. rights to “Paranormal Activity” for $350,000.
“Paranormal Activity 2,” which has a much larger estimated budget of $2.75 million, is again written by Oren Peli with the addition of Michael R. Perry. This time, though, the sequel is directed by Tod Williams instead of Oren Peli. Katie Featherston reprises her role as Katie in “Paranormal Activity 2” and is the only listed cast member. Shock Til You Drop has posted the full trailer for Paranormal Activity 2: Book Of Shadows and it seems the sequel is upping the ante. The first film featured a single camera capturing the bulk of the activity but this time the entire house is equipped with security cameras that are conveniently labeled based on their location (Nrsry 1, Pool 1, Fmly 1, etc). The body count (if you can call it that) has been increased beyond the mainly two person drama of the first by adding a dog, a baby and a Guatemalan housekeeper to the mix. Here’s hoping that Mark Fredrichs reprises his role as the unhelpful psychic!

This is the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 starring Katie Featherston and directed by Tod Williams. The film is the sequel to Paranormal Activity, directed by Oren Peli and starring Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong and Ashley Palmer. Good films about haunting have been a little scarce in the past decade; when it comes to modern horror, it has been a boom time for competent but unoriginal rehashes that can only shock the uninitiated (The Ring, The Omen 666, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, The Last House on the Left). Generally, gore has dominated any remaining scary movies (Saw I-v spring to mind). The relentless bone-cracking and gut-squelching offered by gory films has proved itself to be a particularly mindless form of horror, and anyone seeking something less predictable will find that Paranormal Activity is the perfect antidote. Oren Peli, director of the indie blockbuster horror "Paranormal Activity" announced on his website that Kip Williams has signed on as director for eagerly anticipated follow-up. Paramount Pictures distributes the film which sees theaters October 22nd this year. The first film starred Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong and Ashley Palmer. The film was directed, written and edited by Oren Peli and produced Jason Blum and Peli. It followed a young, middle class couple who move into a seemingly typical suburban “starter” tract house but soon become disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but certainly is very active in the middle of the night. The film provided many a scare for fans and was well harvested via a strong marketing campaign from Paramount.

Maybe if I hadn’t seen The Blair Witch Project a decade ago, then Paranormal Activity (out this week on DVD & Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment - read our theatrical review here) wouldn’t have seemed so borrowed and felt more like a much-needed breath of fresh air in the supernatural and horror genres. But I have seen Blair Witch—and the inferior ripoffs that followed—and it’s hard not to compare the two. Heck, the films’ paths from low-budget, under-the radar indie productions to word-of-mouth shocking box office sensations are even similar.
For some reason, I never got caught up in Paranormal Activity’s hoopla and hype, and so I waited to watch it for the first time in the comfort of my own living room with my family during the holidays. Paranormal Activity (15)
(Oren Peli, 2007, Us) Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs. 86 mins
This movie's paranormal box-office activity in the Us has raised expectations sky high, but it sets out to do one thing – scare the pants off you – and does that horribly well. Tapping into our primal fear of things going bump in the night, especially while we're asleep, it gives you the shivers with little more than a grainy fixed-camera shot of a bedroom, as a regular guy tries to get to the bottom of his girlfriend's alleged haunting by trying to video their nocturnal disturbances. There's a certain amount of audience investment required. If you go in determined not to be scared, you probably won't be, but if that's the case, why buy a ticket in the first place?

Both hair-raising and chilling, this suburban drama skips genre cliches, to come up with a claustrophobic classic
It has been some time since I physically jumped at a scary movie. Horror has become a predictable genre and these days, maggoty skulls can leap out of wardrobes all they want, and we merely yawn. But in this film, all it took was one bedroom door to move 12 inches, unaided – just that, nothing else – and I felt like leaping into the arms of the person next to me. And there were moments when I thought I would not just need to change my trousers, but have them professionally incinerated by a biohazard disposal team.
This ingenious and often genuinely frightening film is a digital mocu-real nightmare, based on the idea of "found" video footage, comparable to The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, lower in budget and humbler in scale than both – but arguably scarier than either.

For all the hype surrounding Paramount’s little-movie-that-could, Paranormal Activity, expectations are set at a level that could never be reached. It’s the downside of a considerable amount of buzz and positive word-of-mouth. The bar is now set accordingly. For those who have yet to see the film, please do not listen to anymore mentions of this movie until you see it. No trailers, no reviews and, for the love of Pete, don’t use Facebook for you may run into the dread status of “Just saw Paranormal Activity and it…..!”.

Paranormal Activity Written and Directed by: Oren Peli Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs Every couple of years, a big independent film success story comes along to remind people that massive budgets and bankable stars are not required to make a movie that strikes a chord with the general public. Earlier this year we already had Neill Blomkamp's District 9, which was independent and low budget in comparison just about every other summer blockbuster out there. Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity, however, is in another class entirely. Reportedly shot for the ridiculously cheap price tag of just $11,000 (less than The Blair Witch Project) back in 2006, the movie was picked up by Dreamworks in the wake of a new surge in handheld horror movies like Rec and Cloverfield. However, after Paramount acquired Dreamworks, it simply sat on a shelf for a couple of years. At one point, it looked...

Sweaty palms … that’s the power of Paranormal Activity. Can’t Micah, Katie and the demon just get along? The home video is always on, to create a vibe of almost real, and it works very well. Who’S It For?
Overall
Sweaty palms … that’s the power of Paranormal Activity. Can’t Micah, Katie and the demon just get along? The home video is always on, to create a vibe of almost real, and it works very well. It never feels like you’re watching a movie. Even if the acting between Sloat and Featherson doesn’t feel like authentic home video, it never enters moviedom. It feels more like a film student’s college project,...

October is here, and you know what that means! Halloween preparations all month long! If you’re having a hard time thinking of a super spooky costume or getting in the Halloween spirit, then head on down to the theater and scare yourself silly with either Ruben Fleischer’s horror/comedy Zombieland, or Oren Peli’s horror/thriller Paranormal Activity.
Of course not everyone can handle getting scared in the theater, so if group shocks don’t tickle your fancy then why not pick up Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell and stay in for a night of screams.

Couple’S Retreat Studio: Universal Rated: PG-13 for sexual content and language. Starring: Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Faizon Love and Kristin Davis Directed by: Peter Billingsley What it’s about: Four couples face a wide array of relationship problems and travel to a tropical resort for a getaway. Unfortunately, they must also face a barrage of couples’ counseling, which puts a greater strain on their relationships. What I liked: I know this movie is just a big roaring pot of cliches, but I thought it was funny. The cast is the key, and it is loaded with some hilarious people. That’s not just the dudes with Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau and Faizon Love (who is the fat black dude that no one seems to remember but throws down the comedy as good as the rest of them). It’s also the ladies with the Kristen/Kristin double bill (yes, I...
