Rap legend Tupac Shakur’s aunt Assata Shakur made history as the first woman to be listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List.
In 2013, Assata Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard, was added to the Most Wanted list after almost 35 years on the run, reports mirror.co.uk.
Tupac’s aunt was found guilty of murdering a US police officer in 1977 but escaped from prison two years later.
In 1973, Assata was driving with fellow Black Liberation Army members Zayd Malik Shakur and Sundiata Acoli. Assata had joined the Black Liberation Army years prior and started using the name Assata in 1971.
The car was pulled over on the New Jersey Turnpike by two state troopers, James Harper and Werner Foerster. The car was “slightly” over the speed limit and had a broken tail light.
Accounts differ of what happened, but a shootout occurred leaving Assata and Trooper Harper wounded,...

Haile Gerima (left) on the set of Harvest: 3,000 YearsWhen I first approached Haile Gerima to talk with me about his work two years ago, he declined. I had been eager to talk with him, the uncompromisingly independent artist behind narrative films like Harvest 3,000 Years (1975), Bush Mama (1979), and Sankofa (1993). But I told him I respected his decision, and we kept in touch over email. He appreciated that I persisted, and later mailed me copies of Wilmington 10 -- U.S.A. 10,000 (1979), After Winter: Sterling Brown (1985), and Imperfect Journey (1994), his virtually inaccessible documentaries. I’d sit with these films for years before the prospect of an interview with Gerima came up again. No stranger to the power of waiting or to the power of “no,” he had turned down numerous opportunities to restore or distribute his films with third parties, brooking no creative compromise. Finally, he yielded to an elaborate retrospective at the Academy Museum,...

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Aisha Dee takes our call.
The Bold Type is coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season, and we're not ready to say goodbye. Over the past few years, we've fallen in love with the series and all the incredible characters. It's almost like Jane, Kat, and Sutton are our friends in real life as well! The final season, which premieres on May 26, is no doubt going to be super bittersweet as we send off our favorite characters, and it seems like the cast is feeling just as emotional.
"I hope that this last season just brings people more comfort and maybe a bit of closure, too."

Anderson .Paak has dropped a remix of his protest song “Lockdown,” with a verse featuring Noname.
The Chicago rapper takes her verse nearly two minutes into the track. “Uh, maybe this round two/Government cinematic, American drive-through/Eat their apple pie in the mornin’ and bury the strange fruit/Then marry the strange fruit and call it the Black love,” she raps. “So when he bleeds, I bleed the sacred riddle/Had no money I can make some so the cops get little/We seen ’em murder the indigenous, the passage middle/The Constitution,...

Nia Long has long been a fixture in Hollywood, but the actor is still celebrating important firsts. With her latest film, “Fatal Affair,” Long steps into a new role, serving as an executive producer for the first time and starring in her first thriller.
“I was saying to myself months prior to reading the script, ‘Wow, it’s really crazy in all of these years being in the industry, I’ve never done a thriller,’” Long tells Variety, explaining how the project landed in her lap. “So, ultimately, I decided this was a great opportunity to ask for a producer credit, to be involved in the beginning, to help with casting, to have ideas about the script and Netflix was very supportive of that.”
And the experience was as empowering as she’d hoped. “For the first time in my career I felt heard,” she says. “I felt like I...

Pan Pacific Park is located in a family-friendly area of Los Angeles, filled with local shops and across the street from Park La Brea known for being home to Angeleno newbies. Right next door to the park is The Grove, an outdoor mall that is adjacent the iconic Original Farmers Market, an L.A. institution that attracts locals and tourists alike. The area is fairly lively on a regular basis, but on May 30, 2020, the park served as a location that was part of a bigger movement for the protection of Black lives.
As the nation and the world reeled from the death of George Floyd as well as Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others due to police brutality and racism, thousands gathered in the park that Saturday to peacefully mourn their deaths and fight against racism. I was one of them. It was a call for change to systemic...

“I love talking about lyrics,” says Rapsody. “I don’t get to talk about it enough.” The North Carolina rapper is sitting in a spacious lounge at Roc Nation’s office, staring up at a giant screen projecting the lyrics to her latest album, Eve.
The 16-track album is packed with historical references (Betty Shabazz, Sojourner Truth), dexterous wordplay (“emit light, rap, or Emmett Till”, she sings in the album’s opening line) and wide-ranging literary allusions to writers like Lorraine Hansberry and Nikki Giovanni.

Going to the movies can feel a lot like agreeing to a blind date: It’s normal to feel a little wary — but also a bit excited — at the potential before agreeing to spend two hours with characters you don’t know. If the film is any good, it wins you over early on, enough so that you stick around to see what happens to these strangers you’ve only just met. But the dynamic works best when there’s instant chemistry, which isn’t always the case — as director Melina Matsoukas (the powerhouse behind Beyoncé’s 65-minute “Lemonade” album-cum-film) discovers in her highly anticipated narrative debut, “Queen & Slim.”
The title couple get off to a bumpy start, both with audiences and with each other, in Matsoukas’ visually arresting, socially conscious riff on the outlaw-hero genre. Two African American singles on what will prove to be one of the worst first dates in cinema history,...
