The former 20th Century Fox domestic distribution boss returns to work with his former 20th Century boss Jim Gianopulos and former marketing colleague Marc Weinstock, effective Dec. 2. Chris Aronson has been named President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution for the Melrose lot and will will report to Weinstock, Paramount’s President of Worldwide Marketing & Distribution and Mary Daily, Co-President of Worldwide Marketing & Distribution.
Aronson is highly respected, not just in the overall distribution and exhibition community, but by filmmakers as well, a true visionary when it comes to the trade and knowing what works in the theatrical space. In the wake of Disney deciding they couldn’t fit him in the new merger, many wondered where Aronson would land, and the logic was that it was always here, back with his Fox pals at Paramount. It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day if there was no romantic movie to go along with the release date and that is why Twentieth Century Fox will be moving its This Means War release date up three days, to Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Normally the movie that is released at or around Valentine’s Day is a heavy driven romance drama, but guys won’t have to worry about that with This Means War.
According to the studio, “This audacious strike comes on the heels of outstanding test screenings and strong word of mouth.”
Commented Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution: “Starting Valentine’s Day, we’re making War, not love. We’re armed and ready with the perfect movie. This is a picture that that has it all – humor, charm, wit and action – and it plays through the roof.”

Los Angeles (October 17, 2011) __ After 29 years working for Twentieth Century Fox, Bert Livingston, the Studio’s senior vice president and co-general sales manager for domestic distribution, will retire on November 1, 2011, it was announced today by Bruce Snyder, Fox’s president of domestic distribution. During his time at Fox, Livingston served as a branch manager in Detroit, Jacksonville and Dallas before becoming Mid-Western division manager in 1989. He later served as Southern division manager, based in Dallas, before moving to Los Angeles in 1997 to become Western division manager. In 2004 he was named co-general sales manager. “Twentieth Century Fox would not be the company it is today if Bert hadn’t decided to make it his business home,” said Bruce Snyder. “He has been such a huge part of the culture here as well as my confidante and partner, lo these many years.” Livingston began his career in 1975 at Brotman & Sherman Theatres in Chicago,...

Summer's penultimate boxoffice session features an eclectic mix of wide openers big and small.
Sony/Screen Gems' heist thriller "Takers" should fetch well into the teen millions in its debut and thus is a candidate to top the domestic rankings if it can build on core urban support for cast members Chris Brown, Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana. Young girls should carry Lionsgate's horror pic "The Last Exorcism" into a similar range through Sunday.
But there's also a $2 billion-plus gorilla in the room this weekend: a 3D-only special edition of James Cameron's all-time boxoffice champ "Avatar." (Hello again, Ms. Saldana.)
Fox's rerelease of the winter blockbuster -- in about 810 3D locations, including 125 Imax specialty venues -- should fetch at least high-single-digit millions during its first frame. Most of the Imax venues handling the special edition will play the pic for two weeks only.

No wonder it takes James Cameron so long between projects. The writer-director-producer is making the press rounds again to promote Avatar: Special Edition, the re-release of his original opus in select theaters this weekend.
The originally 162-minute movie is being expanded eight or nine minutes — recent reports have compromised on 8 1/2 minutes — testing the limits of IMAX’s strict 170-minute run time rule. ”About every 15 minutes you’ll get something new that you haven’t seen before, which is kind of cool,” Fox domestic distribution chief Bruce Snyder told the Hollywood Reporter. (Note: the guy distributing the film says its kind of cool, so it must really be.)
In addition to Cameron’s promise of more banshees, direhorses and glimpses of new animals, his producing partner Jon Landau says there is a whole new scene set in the Na’vi school, more night bioluminescence (ooo, ahhh), and a new action sequence.

Avatar is getting ready to be re-released in theaters this Friday with almost nine minutes of additional footage added in and hopes of bumping its current $2.7 billion worldwide take closer to the $3 billion mark.
There's no denying that while the James Cameron's epic is great on Blu-ray and a good entertainment system, seeing the movie on the biggest and best movie theater screen possible is the way to go. Adding a bunch of new footage will surely draw people out to see what's new and experience the ride again, and Fox's chief of domestic distribution Bruce Snyder says "About every 15 minutes you'll get something new that you haven't seen before, which is kind of cool. It's ba-a-a-ck ... and longer than ever.
James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" revisits global multiplexes this weekend in a quest to pad its record $2.74 billion worldwide boxoffice and hype DVD and Blu-ray Disc special editions planned for the fall. In fact, the theatrical rerelease is billed as a "special edition" of the eco-themed fantasy based on an extra 8 1/2 minutes of footage featuring additional action segments and other scenes.
THR also has learned that the 2D DVD and Blu-ray Disc special editions expected to hit store shelves in November will feature at least 16 minutes of extra "Avatar" footage. A 3D version of the movie won't be available for home entertainment until next year.
"Avatar" producer Jon Landau said new scenes included in the now 171-minute theatrical special edition involve action sequences and narrative-deepening extensions of key scenes involving the blue-skinned Na'vi of Pandora and their human visitors.

Fox was weeks away from releasing June's "Marmaduke" when a dubious reporter asked a studio executive about prospects for the family comedy.
"I have learned never to bet against any dog movie," the exec mused.
The optimism was understandable considering Fox's $143 million domestic success with 2008's "Marley and Me." But unlike that holiday dramedy, summer's dancing-dog comedy was a live action and CGI hybrid of the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" species.
No problem-o, right? After all, the 'munks rang up a combined $447 million domestically for Fox with two family laughers.
Problem-oh: "Marmaduke" fetched less than $33 million after costing $50 million to produce.
But as with some other recent furry-creatures missteps -- including the past weekend's "Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" -- industryites suggest the pic's creative problems were specific to "Marmaduke" and not the genre.
" 'Garfield' was very early in the talking-furry-creatures trend and also was very successful for us,...

Critics have lamented bland summer fare dominated by film sequels and franchise extensions, but for the second consecutive weekend moviegoers will be dished up an original big-screen concoction expected to reap tasty boxoffice.
A week after Warner Bros. raked in $62.8 million in domestic coin with the Christopher Nolan-helmed fantasy thriller "Inception," Sony's Angelina Jolie starrer "Salt" will try to shake the Leonardo DiCaprio pic from the top spot in the rankings. "Salt" opens in more than 3,500 locations starting Friday.
A broadly targeted action thriller, the PG-13 pic's prerelease media blitz has been peppered with the message: Angelina is back to kicking butt. The return to the action genre for the one-time tomb-raiding topliner appears headed for a lucrative debut, with tracking surveys suggesting "Salt" will collect up to $40 million in first-frame loot.
Produced for upward of $100 million, "Salt" originally was conceived as a Tom Cruise vehicle until being retooled for the female lead.

Much as the baseball world takes stock of who's hot and who's not with its midseason All-Star game, Hollywood has a good sense of summer winners and losers once Independence Day is torn from the movie release calendar.
Warner Bros. and Fox have sipped from a glass half empty so far during the hottest boxoffice season of the year, while Paramount has tied one on from a cup that runneth over.
Par tops seasonal rankings by a comfortable margin, thanks to the Melrose Avenue studio's handling a lucrative DreamWorks Animation tentpole in addition to its own summer-launching of "Iron Man 2," a $309 million domestic grosser.
Top midsummer sluggers include Par with $634.5 million and a 29% market share, Disney with $402.8 million and an 18% share; and Sony with $248.5 million and 11% of the market.

This weekend could put some sizzle back in the summer boxoffice.
Two studio tentpoles hit the marketplace Friday supported by solid interest in tracking polls: Sony's remake of "The Karate Kid," starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, and Fox's Joe Carnahan-helmed adaptation of 1980s TV series "The A-Team."
"Kid" could kick up $30 million-$35 million through Sunday, and "A-Team" also ought to assemble at least $30 million. That would make for a one-two boxoffice punch of the sort even rival distributors would applaud if it can rouse the market from an early-season stupor.
Both pics should appeal to family moviegoers, but any audience overlap is mitigated by their respective ratings: "Kid" packs a PG, and "A-Team" is PG-13. One of the two should debut at No. 1.
"Both pictures look solid, and it looks like it could be close," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.

Three weeks in a row in the top spot at the box office is great news for the folks behind Shrek Forever After, but not for the material it's up against, particularly films that have debuted in Shrek's second and third week out. Even worse, Forever After isn't doing too hot as compared to its predecessors. So far the film has earned $183 million domestically, which is a nice chunk above the first Shrek film at this point in its run, but it's lagging way behind the second and the third which earned $314.5 and $255.9 million respectively. Meanwhile, Universal is likely pleased with Get Him to the Greeks' $17.6 million haul and Lionsgate modestly happy with Killers' $15.8 million, but this is the summer season we're talking about; where are the massive blockbusters?

This just in: Knight and Day, the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action comedy that hopes to springboard both stars back near their popularity levels of several years ago, will get a head start on the competition later this month.
Instead of galloping into theaters on June 25th, Fox is launching Knight and Day on Wednesday the 23rd. "It gives us a little bit of a jump on the weekend and the opportunity to get word-of-mouth going," Fox domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said in a press release. "We want to let people know how wonderful this picture is."
Good or not, this does give the film a jump on Grown Ups, which will also target the non-18-24 crowd, and it allows Fox to further capitalize on Cruise's recent resurgence playing the Les Grossman character from Tropic Thunder at the MTV Awards. Had the movie been released this week,...

In a summer that's been defined so far by disappointments and bombs, you can forgive me for maybe being irrationally excited about Knight and Day. It may turn out to be a standard issue action comedy romp, but the previews so far have looked good, and what can I say, I grew up in the 90s-- Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz will always have a special place in my heart. Apparently I'm not the only one with high hopes for the movie-- the movie's release date has been pushed up by two days, to June 23. Knight and Day will be going head-to-head with the Adam Sandler/Chris Rock comedy Grown-Ups that weekend, and the Wednesday release will give it a slight head start, as explained by Fox domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder: "It gives us a little bit of a jump on the weekend and the opportunity to get...

Fox will unspool the action comedy "Knight and Day" on June 23, two days earlier than planned.
That means "Knight" -- starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz -- is now set to hit multiplexes midweek ahead of the June 25 weekend. Sony opens PG-13 comedy "Grown Ups" on June 25.

That means "Knight" -- starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz -- is now set to hit multiplexes midweek ahead of the June 25 weekend. Sony opens PG-13 comedy "Grown Ups" on June 25.
"It gives us a little bit of a jump on the weekend and the opportunity to get word-of-mouth going," Fox domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said Monday. "We want to let people know how wonderful this picture is."

The battle for supremacy at the domestic boxoffice this weekend amounts to the clash of a titanic 3D holdover and a comedy for the date-movie crowd.
Fox's appropriately titled "Date Night" should appeal to couples and fans of topliners Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Directed by Shawn Levy (the "Night at the Museum" films), the PG-13 pic about a suburban couple's accidental walk on the wild side targets a broad swath of adult moviegoers.
Its mainstream campaign has featured ubiquitous TV spots and billboards and a recent Parade magazine cover story. Early reviews have been promising and should further position the pic as a smart comedy with broad appeal.
Studios execs see the market as ripe for a new comedy with the most recent one, MGM's R-rated "Hot Tub Time Machine," entering its third weekend in release.
"This is the first straight-ahead comedy for everyone in a while," Fox distribution president Bruce Snyder said.

With the first quarter in the books and less than a month until the start of the summer boxoffice season, Fox holds the pole position in domestic market share for a second straight year.
Last year, that early jump mattered little, as Warner Bros. captured both summer and annual bragging rights on the strength of a killer second half. But Fox boasts a notably improved summer lineup this year, so it will be interesting to watch the distribution titans clash in the all-important seasonal marketplace.
Meantime, Warners shaved a percentage point off of Fox's lead just last weekend with the $64.2 million bow of "Clash of the Titans."
Through Sunday, Fox boasts $751 million in year-to-date b.o. for a 26% market share, based on three new releases and three holdovers. Warners sits second among all domestic distribs with $535 million in 2010 coin and a 19% share from six new pics and eight holdovers.

Get ready for a 3D three-peat at the weekend domestic boxoffice.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" demonstrated its holding power during the previous frame, when it dropped just 46% as it took in an additional $62.7 million. Another 45% drop this weekend would see the Tim Burton-directed fantasy collect a mid-$30 million figure, which should allow it to dominate all competition -- and that's despite a trio of new pics hitting multiplexes in wide release.
Still, the market should find room for a couple of the rookies to establish solid footholds.
Sony's action comedy "The Bounty Hunter," starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, is a good bet for second place with a debut of $20 million-$23 million. Rated PG-13, "Bounty" will be hunting the date-movie crowd with its battle-of-the-sexes tale, directed by Andy Tennant ("Fool's Gold"), with Butler playing a bounty hunter who takes on the assignment of bringing in ex-wife Aniston.

Summertime moviegoers tend to vote early and, if things go well, often.
During the past five years, about 42% of annual domestic boxoffice has been rung up during the summer, which the industry marks beginning the first weekend in May. With summer boxoffice often notably front-loaded, executives usually have a pretty good sense of how the season is shaping up by the end of the first month.
Helpfully this year, each of the season's first three sessions will see a popular big-screen character march into multiplexes.
Paramount unspools "Iron Man 2" on May 7, Universal bows "Robin Hood" on May 14 and the Paramount-distributed 3D sequel "Shrek Forever After" from DreamWorks Animation debuts May 21. Then Disney offers the video game-spawned "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" during the May 28 Memorial Day frame, and Warner Bros. is banking on a counterprogramming payday with the female-targeted "Sex and the City 2" set for May 27.
