Each year, the amfAR Gala is one of the biggest celebrity-studded and exclusive black-tie events during the Cannes Film Festival. Always held on the last Thursday of the festival, the evening brings together notable names and those with thick wallets to raise money for AIDS research and HIV prevention, treatment, education and advocacy. This year, the 30th edition of the gala — held at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — started off with cocktails and the red carpet, then a dinner and live auction.
Among the glittering stars attending the gala were Michelle Yeoh, Heidi Klum, Andie MacDowell, Diane Kruger, Colman Domingo, Maria Bakalova, Odell Beckham, Jr., Tommy and Dee Hilfiger, Paris Jackson, Magic Johnson, Coco Rocha, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Bella Thorne, Julian Lennon and more.

Forget about all the studio-thrown premiere after-parties at prior Cannes, from Paramount’s Rocketman with Elton John performing at the beach, and Warner Bros’ Elvis which touted a King of Rock ‘n’ Roll drone show. amfAR’s annual gala, this year counting 30 years, blew them all away, capped off early Friday Am by a mind-blowing mini-concert by Cher who got the crowd on its feet after a four-hour auction with such hits as “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” and covers of Abba’s “Waterloo” and Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”. Vocally and in regards to sheer stage dynamic, Cher, at 78, is a force to be reckoned with; delivering a truly unforgettable pitch-perfect performance.

Which performance received the best reviews at Cannes? Cher managed to conquer this year’s film festival even without appearing on screen.
At 12:30 a.m. in the South of France, decked out in a dazzling sequined purple pantsuit, Cher took the stage at Cannes amfAR, the charity gala devoted to raising money for research for HIV and AIDS. “I thought you guys would be drunk, but obviously you’re not,” Cher said after performing an acoustic rendition of “Walking in Memphis,” the Marc Cohn ballad she covered on her 1995 album “It’s a Man’s World,” that had hundreds of guests cheering her on.
Three songs later — and one costume change into a black sparkling jacket over couture negligee — Cher had emerged victorious. The crowd at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc would have given her the biggest standing ovation of Cannes, except they never sat during her 15-minute set.

It was the 75th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival this year and certainly the fest itself thought that alone was cause for celebration, and they did exactly that, but they were not the only ones with reason to party. As the pandemic cancelled the 2020 fest, and downsized the 2021 fest, there was definitely a feeling that it was time to party again in Cannes, just like it was 2019 all over again. And that certainly was the vibe when amFAR returned to form Thursday night, making money to benefit the continuing fight against AIDS, even if it seems that the cause has been overshadowed by Covid in recent times. amFAR chairmen T. Ryan Greenawalt and Kevin McClatchy made the point that while many countries were doing better, others weren’t, and they offered the troubling statistic that still there are 2,000 AIDS-related deaths every day, and 4,000 new infections daily.

It was after 1 a.m. in Antibes when Christina Aguilera performed at the 28th annual amfAR gala at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday morning. Inside a tent at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, overlooking the Mediterranean sea, a lux crowd of European high rollers crowded the stage as Michelle Rodriguez took the mic to introduce the night’s headliner.
“Five-time Grammy Award winning … is going to bless you with her voice …”
“Six! Six!” the crowd of fans shouted back, correcting the “Fast & Furious” star on the number of Grammys Aguilera has actually won.
Yes, it was very late, but that didn’t stop Aguilera from putting on a powerhouse performance. Decked out in a fur jacket, despite the boiling temperature inside the tent, and surrounded by a flock of backup dancers, Aguilera rocked out like she was doing a stadium tour. The pop star’s five-song set opened with the 2002 dance anthem “Dirrty,...

Sharon Stone wasn’t getting the bids that she wanted.
Around midnight on Friday night in France, after a dazzling fashion show on the lawn of a mansion in Antibes, the actor-turned-emcee was auctioning off 32 one-of-a-kind gowns by designers such as Versace, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy and Balenciaga at the amfAR Cannes gala.
Joined onstage by the 32 models who’d walked a makeshift runway — which was so slippery, two of them had tripped — Stone was ready to pocket a big check for the non-profit devoted to fighting HIV/AIDS.
But the money didn’t flow as freely as the bottles of champagne that amfAR waiters poured over a five-hour dinner for a crowd of about 400 European high rollers, business titans and oligarchs.
“Do I have a bid for $200,000!” Stone said. “Let’s go.” After not a single hand went up immediately, Stone looked out into the crowd with exasperation. “What a bunch of cheap motherfuckers,...

After a Covid-induced break last year, the annual amFAR Gala Cannes supporting AIDS research returned to Cap d’Antibes on Friday night, and with it, host Sharon Stone who had been absent from the Cannes Film Festival-adjacent event for several years. The venue was new this year, with the Villa Eilenroc standing in for the Hotel du Cap. The majestic house and gardens were once upon a time frequented by F Scott Fitzgerald, and fittingly, there was a Gatsby-esque theme to the very long evening from cocktails through dinner, an Alicia Keys performance and an auction whose momentum never really materialized.

AmfAR has clarified the talent lineup for its annual fundraising gala to be held in conjunction with the Cannes Film Festival.
Earlier today, AmfAR told Variety that The Weeknd had been confirmed to perform at the July 16 event. But in fact there was a miscommunication somewhere along the way and representatives for the artist said he was no longer able to commit to the event.
“We were obviously very disappointed to learn that The Weeknd will no longer be able to perform at our Cannes gala,” said AmfAR CEO Kevin Frost. “We are nevertheless thrilled to be able to return to live events and to the South of France in particular, and we’re confident that this year’s event will be as spectacular and successful as ever.”
AmfAR’s annual fundraising is typically among the highlights of Cannes, which was delayed this year from its usual May timing by the pandemic.

Amazon’s fashion design competition “Making the Cut” has enlisted designer Jeremy Scott and “America’s Next Top Model” alum Winnie Harlow as judges for Season 2, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The duo will join hosts Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum on the season as permanent judges, replacing the judging panel of Season 1, which featured the likes of Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and designer Joseph Altuzarra.
In another change from last season, the new set of episodes were filmed entirely in Los Angeles under Covid-19 safety protocols, rather than showcasing an around-the-world tour of international fashion hubs.
“I am so excited to be in my hometown of Los Angeles with such a talented group of designers and judges for season two,” Klum said in a statement. “This last year brought so many unforeseen challenges across the globe, so I feel grateful that...

You may have heard his name uttered by Kanye West or Migos in songs but Martin Margiela isn’t necessarily a household name when it comes to fashion — but it should be. One of the most elusive designers in the fashion industry, there are barely any photos of him on the internet, but his work speaks for itself. In the Oscilloscope documentary, Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, filmmaker Reiner Holzemer takes us behind the scenes of the career of the titular avant-garde.
With the docu, Margiela breaks his no-interview policy and aversion to being in the public eye as Holzemer puts the spotlight on the “Banksy of fashion”. He worked as Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant and was the creative director at Hermès before he started his own fashion house. For the first time, Margiela reveals his drawings, notes, and personal items in this intimate profile of his vision...

"Anonymity is very important to me." Oscilloscope has debuted an official trailer for a fashion documentary titled Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, which first premiered at the Doc NYC Film Festival last year. It seems one of the big doc trends right now is films about fashion designers and the crazy lives they lead - there are so many of them recently. After more than a decade since leaving Maison Martin Margiela, Martin Margiela takes a look back at his 20 years of work as fashion designer. Martin Margiela has never shown his face to the public, preferring the clothes to speak for themselves. Likewise, in this fashion doc the designer picks pivotal pieces from his collections. The film features interviews with, among others, Margiela himself, Jean Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld, trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, fashion critic Cathy Horyn, and fashion historian Olivier Saillard. The score was composed by Belgian rock band dEUS.

Supermodel Anok Yai is opening up about her experiences with "racial injustice." Along with sharing her personal experiences with "racial injustice," she also discussed the fashion industry, her friendship with French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld and more. "Even though I still deal with racial injustice, I'm proud that I've always stood for what I believed in, regardless of whatever amount of pressure was put on me," she wrote....

In episode three of “Making the Cut,” “Collaboration,” the designers had to work in pairs to create mini collections that blended their aesthetics. At the end of that episode Josh Hupper was eliminated (he actually sort of eliminated himself before the judges even had the chance), and his partner Troy Hul Arnold was on the verge of elimination. So did the judges’ ultimately decide to give him a second chance? And how did the designers do in the next challenge when they had mere hours instead of days to create “Fight for Your Life” looks? Naomi Campbell does not tolerate irreverence for high fashion.
“With couture, there’s a certain respect you have to have,” she says sternly to a nervous designer on the chopping block. “I mean, it goes back centuries. I feel like you disrespected the whole entire word and this assignment because we can all pin a wrap.”
Prior to joining the judging panel of “Making the Cut” — Amazon Studios’ new unscripted fashion design competition series, hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn — Campbell had thought she was done with reality TV. But the supermodel and philanthropist was drawn back in by a comrade from her ‘90s modeling days.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the first two episodes of “Making The Cut.”
Heidi Klum is the kooky aunt, Tim Gunn is the security blanket, and Amazon Prime Video is footing the bill.
“Making The Cut” is the ex-“Project Runway” pair’s new fashion reality competition with a facelift, and the rules are different this time. Contestants are already established designers and hail from all over the globe, more than one person can go home at any time, overnight seamstresses handle all the sewing, each week the winning look is sold on Amazon. Oh, and Naomi Campbell is a judge.
In the first episode, the contestants gathered Stateside for a New York minute before getting whisked away to Paris for their first challenge. There, they were tasked with creating two looks: One runway and one accessible. Sell-ability is key.
