"It's blood money." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for The God Committee, a new medical drama about doctors from filmmaker Austin Stark (The Runner). The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month before opening in select theaters starting in July. It follows a group of medical professionals who are forced to "play God," as they a part of a hospital committee that must decide which patients will receive necessary organ transplants. It begs many moral questions that nurses/doctors have dealt with over the past year, while also having a suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing through the end. The film features an excellent cast: Kelsey Grammer, Julia Stiles, Janeane Garofalo, Peter Y. Kim, Caroline Lagerfelt, Elizabeth Masucci, with Dan Hedaya and Colman Domingo. This looks like an utterly fascinating, impassioned film about the literal life-or-death decisions that doctors must make. Here's the...

There’s a movie opening this week that you should be paying more attention to. It’s one of 2018’s very best, features an Oscar worthy lead performance, and announces a brilliant female filmmaker as someone to really watch out for. The movie in question? All About Nina, which I’ve been raving about since the Tribeca Film Festival. This weekend marks the time where it finally hits theaters. The performance in question belongs to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will blow you mind. The filmmaker in question is Eva Vives, who should be at the top of ever executive’s list when looking for an exciting director to meet with. It all adds up to something that’s among the five best things I’ve seen all year. The flick is phenomenal from start to finish. Once again, for those of you who forgot, the film is a pitch black...

Back at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, the best movie, by far, was Eva Vives’ All About Nina. Featuring the best performance to date from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, it was a real gem. With The Orchard putting it out into theaters next month, a Trailer has dropped for the flick. This film remains a real favorite of mine, so it’s one that will heavily mentioned in the weeks to come, you can take that to the bank. Today, we’ll be focusing on the Trailer itself, which you can see below. First up, however, some more raving about this movie. It’s one of my top five films of the year right now, so that kind of goes without saying. Vives and Winstead deserve plenty of attention when the precursor season hits in the late fall/early winter. The movie is a pitch black comedy with a...

A couple of years ago, Edward Burns appeared in a TNT limited series called Mob City. It didn't perform very well in the ratings. Now, he's back on the network in a much bigger role -- as an actor, director, and writer. Will Public Morals be a success for Burns and the cable channel? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
Set in early 1960s New York City, Public Morals revolves around the professional and personal lives of the members of the NYPD's Public Morals Division. They enforce the vice laws that are still on the books but that no one wants to enforce -- prohibiting crimes like gambling and prostitution. The large cast includes Edward Burns, Michael Rapaport, Elizabeth Masucci, Katrina Bowden, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Wass Stevens, Keith Nobbs, Austin Stowell, Patrick Murney, Lyndon Smith, Brian Wiles, and Cormac Cullinane.

There aren’t a lot of people who can pull off writer/director/actor in the first place, but among those who can pull it off, they need to find an exact fit. Edward Burns shot out of the gates with The Brothers McMullen 20 years ago, and he’s been trying to find the sweet spot again ever since, and without much luck.
His work mostly hasn’t been bad, but it hasn’t been great (though The Fitzgerald Family Christmas came close), and it has seemed a result of trying to make niches work when there wasn’t truly a lot of potential.
Though Burns only acted in Mob City, it apparently tuned him into a niche he could work with.
With Public Morals, Burns is back in the everything chair, and now he has exactly the right team with him, and though he kicks off slightly cheesy, once...

This is a lovely scene from Shame which comes from the dudes at Digital Spy and shows Carey Mulligan singing a slowed down version of New York, New York while Michael Fassbender looks on. It’s a beautiful scene which sets the mood beautifully for this fabulous film. If you missed our review, you can see it here but suffice to say, we liked it a lot.

Title: Shame Director: Steve McQueen Starring: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale, Hannah Ware, Nicole Beharie, Elizabeth Masucci Years ago, when the Nc-17 rating was first created, it was serious-minded, almost grim explorations of adult sexuality like “Shame” that its champions no doubt had in mind. Of course, along came the campy “Showgirls,” which didn’t help matters. Mostly, though, the Nc-17 rating was a non-starter for Hollywood studios not only because they tend to instinctively shy away from art and controversy like a cat avoids rain, but also because many newspapers — bowing to the tom-toms of local morality police — refused to carry advertising for Nc-17 films, which made...

It is quite impressive -- the publicity, that is -- and while discussing writer-director Steve McQueen's Shame, it is the elephant in the room. (That is not intended to be a comment on the size of said penis, though you can take it as one if you wish, as Smells Like Screen Spirit is a classy publication that does not intend to focus its efforts on the critiquing of actors' genitalia.) The reason Fassbender's penis is getting so much press is because film audiences (especially within the puritanical boarders of the United States) are not used...

Shame Trailer. Steve McQueen‘s Shame (2011) international movie trailer stars Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale, Amy Hargreaves, and Elizabeth Masucci. Shame‘s plot synopsis: “Shame centers around a New Yorker named Brandon (Fassbender) who avoids intimacy but is compulsively addicted to sex. When his troubled younger sister (Mulligan) comes to stay with him in his apartment, he finds his orderly life disrupted by her presence and reminders of their unhappy past.”
